The Surprising Reason You Might Get Dandruff

      Let’s talk about … dandruff.

It’s a reality for over 3 million Australians, equating to approximately 1 in 8 people trying to deftly conceal their scalp problem on a daily basis, frequently checking their backs and dusting themselves off. Not exactly ideal.

The most talked-about solution is medicated shampoo or washing your hair more (who wants to do that?). Recently, we learnt about a way to prevent its onset altogether – and it’s so simple!

“Women should avoid washing their hair at night,” says Kathy Gilbert, founder of Crown Hair Salon. More specifically, we should wait for hair to dry completely before sleeping or tying it up.

“It’s an Aussie girl thing – we don’t let our hair dry entirely before putting it up. Especially in summer, we shower at night, go in and out of the surf, go to the gym – it’s the active lifestyle and we let moisture sit in our hair,” she adds.

Gilbert also points out that dandruff is a bit of a misnomer. In her opinion, hardly anybody has dandruff, what they’ve normally got is a dehydrated or dry scalp, which is aggravated by letting a scalp sit damp for hours.

“It is like leaving water sitting on your skin, after a while the surface of the skin goes puffy and shrivelled and if you do that for a long period of time to your scalp and add styling products, eventually it’s going to build-up and flake or peel, and get itchy,” she explains.

The remedy is to wash your hair in the morning so it has enough time to dry throughout the day or blow-dry it more frequently especially in winter, ensuring it is completely dry.

A Dyson Supersonic comes highly recommended as it provides heat-temperature control. Not only won’t it overheat, it also distributes the same amount of heat so all your strands dry evenly. Pop a bit of Wendy Iles’ lush Iles Formula Haute Performance Finishing Serum in there for heat, UV and anti-frizz protection to avoid additional dehydration.

Just a PSA for your day. As you were (minus the damp hair).

The Products We Would Take If We Were Stranded On An Island

The scenario is this: you’re stuck on a desert island. You’re allowed a handful of beauty products (two, we decided). What do you take?

Do you go for the pragmatic sunscreen-and-moisturiser combo, or do you strategically take a facial mist and oil? Or, do you simply pack a Tangle Teezer and tinted lip balm and hope for the best?

The Gritty Pretty team had a go answering this damned hypothetical, and the choices for beauty survival were a mixed bag of practical and interesting…

      [responsive imageid=’27569′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      ELIZA, ADVERTISING & PARTNERSHIPS DIRECTOR
“My first pick is Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream Skin Protectant , a balm that is both soothing and moisturising and can be applied to lips, face and any irritated dry skin areas of the body. I’ll also take Nivea Firming Body Lotion Q10 Plus. I am obsessed with this product and apply after showering daily. It leaves my skin hydrated and soft and I really notice the difference when I don’t use it. Meghan Markle swears by it too (just sayin’).”

      WENDY, BEAUTY EDITOR
“Firstly, stock me up with endless hair ties because if I have to wear my hair down the whole time, I think that’ll just drive me crazy. I’m also going to bring Biologi Hydration Body Serum along for the ride. Slather that all over my body and face. I don’t wear it normally because it’s a bit too rich with all the other products I’ve got going on, but used exclusively under the circumstances, I think it’s the best solution. The vitamin C-rich formula promotes collagen, deeply hydrates, reduces cellulite, and helps fight pigmentation and free radical damage from the sun. I’ve been told its so hydrating, it’d a waste to use moisturiser on top and it’s also 100% natural. FACT: I saw the founder nonchalantly put some in his mouth, so if sustenance is low…”

      ELEANOR, FOUNDER & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
“On a desert island, fresh water is key for survival. If I had a large bottle of Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray handy, I could use it to refresh my skin, keep me cool and likely drink it if I was on the borders of desperation. I’d also likely have a bottle of IT Cosmetics CC Cream because it’s SPF 50 and if I am likely to be rescued then at least I’ll look great.”

      [responsive imageid=’27570′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      LAUREN, LIFESTYLE EDITOR
MECCA Cosmetica In A Good Light SPF30+ Tinted Moisturiser is one of the best products I’ve ever used – it’s moisturising, light-weight and SPF 30+, but also has a light illuminating tint and offers the perfect amount of coverage for someone who doesn’t like a heavy foundation. My other pick is Glossier Balm Dotcom (original). It’s hydrating, long lasting and has a really smooth, non-sticky texture which I love – exactly what you would want and need stranded on a desert island, and everyday.”

      ERICA, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
“I’d take TRILOGY Rose Hip Oil because it offers an awesome overnight moisture surge; I wake up to soft, moisturised skin. I would also take ECO Tan Face Tan Water, a gradual liquid self-tanning toner. As much as I’d love to wear SPF all day, I would still love some colour. This product gives a slight natural glow overnight and seems to help clear up any spots as well. Bonus!”

      MORGAN, ART DIRECTOR
“I’d take the Jurlique Sun Specialist SPF 40+ Sunscreen. If I’m on a deserted island, I want to be tanning as much as possible. #gymtanlaundry. I’d also take the Bioderma Atoderm Lip Balm because I naturally have incredibly dry lips, so when I am in salt water or in the sun I need to hydrate them as much as possible and this lip balm actually works!”

Beauty Editors Top Picks – February 2018

As beauty editors, we get to trial A LOT of beauty products.

      Hey, someone’s gotta do it. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

To be completely honest, a lot of what we test passes as mediocre. The beauty market is a competitive – and repetitive – space so it takes something remarkable to stand out. And when we do find something that impresses us, it’s worth sharing.

100% unsponsored, 100% tested by us, 100% recommended, read our team’s picks below:

Drunk Elephant Beste No.9 Jelly Cleanser, $49
“This month, I’ve been testing this cleanser. I’ve been paying attention to the global hype surrounding the U.S-born brand and after launching in Australia at MECCA, I was really excited to finally get my hands on it. The innovative cleanser removes all traces of makeup and any other grime from the day. The unique jelly texture is effective but super gentle. It’s also free of SLS, fragrance and essential oils – perfect for sensitive skin types – however the ingredients list does state it contains animal fats/oils/musks.” – Eleanor, Founder & Editor-in-Chief

      Diorshow Pump’N’Volume Mascara, $56
“The mascara formula builds amazing volume with just a handful of strokes. The ingenious rubber tube also means I’m able to remove excess product by squeezing the tube while pulling out the wand, instead of wiping precious product on a tissue or around the rim of the mascara tube.” Hannah, Editorial Intern

      [responsive imageid=’27408′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]

      [/responsive]

Ole Henricksen Banana Bright Eye Crème, $55
“I love the texture of this eye cream, it’s not too thick to wear during the day which some eye creams can be. It contains vitamin C, which brightens the look of dark circles over time and illuminates instantly with banana powder. It catches the light just right when I am on the move.” – Morgan, Creative Director

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Tint Cream, $44
“I really liked this product, it has an SPF30+ and the tint gives a nice light coverage; great for a quick trip to the shops. The SPF is slightly noticeable on first application but after a few minutes you can’t tell and it has a non-greasy finish.” – Erica, Business Development Manager

      [responsive imageid=’27411′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      Chantecaille Liquid Lumiere, $64
“Loving this lightweight liquid highlighter, I place it directly onto my t-zone before applying foundation with a sponge and it gives an instant luminous glow and radiant finish which lasts throughout the day.” Eliza, Advertising and Partnerships Director

Benefit Cosmetics BadGAL Bang Mascara, $42
“Being the follow-up to Goliaths in the mascara world like BENEFIT They’re Real! and Roller Lash  would have been a daunting task, but I’m pretty impressed with BENEFIT’s spin-off, BADgal Bang! Even if BENEFIT mascaras haven’t been your thing in the past, I’d encourage you to try this one out. It instantly tints lashes so they’re super dark. Incredibly lengthening and volumising, girls who love dramatic lashes and those lacking in the lash department will love.” – Wendy, Beauty Editor

      BRIDAL BEAUTY:
      SARA CRAMPTON

A wedding is the perfect excuse to splurge on your skin, but we get that it can be overwhelming. There are a lot of treatments and not a lot of time. That’s why Gritty Pretty’s introduced Bridal Beauty, a section dedicated to word-of-mouth bridal beauty tips from those in the know.

In this edition, we’re taking you behind the pre-wedding beauty routine of Harper & Harley Founder and The UNDONE Director/Buyer, Sara Crampton (née Donaldson). She married her partner of 5 years in a beautiful ceremony on her husband’s idyllic family property, a macadamia farm in the hinterland of Byron Bay, last October.

      [new_royalslider id=”6″]

      MY WEDDING-SKIN PREP…

“So late! I was so distracted with the planning I forgot to schedule in my beauty appointments, and then when I realised I only had 8 weeks to go so I called Jocelyn Petroni for help.”

      MY SKINCARE REGIME…

“My skin was actually super stressed out in the months leading up to the wedding. Not ideal. So with just 8 weeks to go I went full detox, changed my skincare to Drunk Elephant cleanser and moisturiser and nothing else. I then booked in for weekly light therapy facials from Jocelyn Petroni and when I say my skin was starting to relax, she got me to start using Ultraceuticals Brightening Serum in the mornings. Just a couple of time a week at first, and we worked it up to daily applications the week prior to the wedding. She totally saved me, by my wedding day my skin was in really good shape and you could even say I had that glow that everyone talks about.”

      I WOULD CHANGE…

“I would definitely have started earlier. I should know better, but as a bride you get sucked into a bit of a vortex. I also co-ordinated the entire wedding myself so I was more focused on talking to suppliers than I was focusing on my appearance.”

      MY WEDDING INSPIRATION…

“Pinterest – I’ve shared my actual Pinterest wedding board here.”

      MY MAKEUP ARTIST…

“I coordinated both my hair and makeup through Edwards and Co’s Byron Bay salon. Alexis Mahoney did an amazing job and totally achieved my natural and glowing brief. She’s actually listed all the products she used, here.”

      MY HAIR STYLIST…

“I wore an off-shoulder Jane Hill Bridal dress so I wanted my hair pulled back into a low bun. My hair was still quite short so Nicholas Morley had to work his magic!”

      MY LIPSTICK…

“It was natural nude/pink, which I’m sure was a blend of a few things, but unsure on the exact shade.”

      MY FRAGRANCE…

“Both my husband and I wore scents from Jo Malone. Mine was layering Wood Sage and Sea Salt, English Pear and Freesia and Peony and Blush Suede. My husband wore English Oak and Hazelnut. I really love the idea of wearing a scent you haven’t worn before that then reminds you of your big day. Don’t underestimate the power of scent, it’s incredible!”

      BEAUTY TALK: KIRSTY GODSO

If you’re not lunge-deep in the fitness world, you can’t be blamed for not knowing who Kirsty Godso is.

Let us make the introduction: Godso is a NIKE Master Trainer, a highly-evolved human who can do things with her arms that make us feel like miracles can happen. Her instagram @KirstyGodso features some jaw-on-the-floor stuff (ours and hers). Sometimes it feels like you’ve had an eye workout just by watching her throw down at the gym. She’s also got the best eyebrows on any personal trainer we’ve have ever seen. Go see how right we are.

Recently, the New Zealand native was back in Australia to launch CliniqueFIT as Global Ambassador. Designed for women on the move, CliniqueFIT is a collection of travel-sized pre- and post-workout products. There’s six to collect in “phase one”, and why hasn’t this been done before?

Gritty Pretty spoke to Godso about wearing makeup while exercising, how she keeps scoring those coveted roles, what she misses most about home and how much water she drinks a day for brilliantly good skin.

GRITTY PRETTY: Tell us, how does one become a NIKE master trainer?

KIRSTY GODSO: I actually have a double business degree so I studied finance and marketing and I always loved sport growing up in New Zealand on a farm. The whole time I was at university I was crazy with fitness. My timetable was based around training and then once I got my degree I worked in media for a bit and I just couldn’t stop thinking about training, especially after my first trip to the States where I tried my first high intensity workout. That’s when I got hooked!

I came back to New Zealand and got certified, then I was a PT while working full time. I created a high intensity program for a company in New Zealand called Les Mills, which they sold around the world.  At the time, we didn’t really know where high intensity interval training (HIIT) was going to go and it wasn’t as big a thing as it is now.

That’s how NIKE noticed me and I started looking after Australia and New Zealand for them, before transitioning to global and moving to New York two years ago (Godso is now based there). I was so lucky with my journey with NIKE, I’ve been with them for six years now and along the way I’ve done other projects, too. I love to keep my business degree going by consulting for other brands and creative studios.

      [responsive imageid=’26968′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive][responsive imageid=’26970′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      GP: That’s amazing!

KG: I’ve also made my own protein powder which comes out later this year. It’s fun to have other projects that are related to wellness, and having ways to connect with with those that aren’t into traditional fitness.

GP: Do you notice a difference in your skin when you stop exercising?

KG: I’m lucky I have good skin (not to sound like a dick about it!). But I notice that my skin looks way more youthful when I have a good relationship with exercise, hydration and food. I’m a big believer in that so your beauty routine can be more simple.

GP: This is going to put us to shame, but how much water do you drink a day?

KG: Four litres… but I work out a lot.

GP: Do you have any tips to make water consumption easier?

KG: A lot of people think I add lemon to my water for weight loss – but it’s to make my water taste better! If that helps you get through it then that [is my tip].

      [responsive imageid=’26971′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive][responsive imageid=’26984′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

GP: Do you wear makeup when you exercise?

KG: Usually I’m training other people for hours in a row, so I’ll wear tinted moisturiser, brush my brows up, and I’ll have mascara on. I also dab on a bit of highlighter, so then I look presentable for the [work] day. But when it’s Sunday and I’m by myself, I’ll just brush my brows up.

GP: What beauty products do you use?

KG: I have this brow brush, which is my favourite thing ever by Sania’s Brow Bar, based in New York. They want to come down to Australia and I’m like ‘yo, you should’ because they’re amazing.

I swear by Sunday Riley UFO OilI use it as a base under any makeup or tinted moisturiser and it just gives this glow from underneath. If you read the packaging it says it’s for acne-prone skin but I’ve never had acne-prone skin and its perfect for me. Then there’s BECCA Highlighter in Champagne Pop that I love. I also love CliniqueFIT 24 Hour Mascara, which is my favourite. It actually individualises all the lashes so it looks like  you have way more and it honestly stays on all day. The CliniqueFIT Post-Workout Face & Body Hydrating Spray is awesome for travel. The other brand I love is TATCHA and they do a Luminous Dewy Skin Mist that I use as a finisher to spray on.

GP: What fragrance do you wear?

KG: I wear Commes des Garconne Blackpepper, I also love their White EDT fragrance and a perfume oil by Maison Louis Marie No.

      GP: And sunscreen?

KG: I use this Korean skincare brand called The Panacea, and I’m trying to get them to launch out here because I really love their cleanser and their sunscreens.

      [responsive imageid=’26983′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive][responsive imageid=’26966′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

GP: What do you miss most about home and life in New Zealand?

KG: I miss my cat, Niko, who lives there. I’m a crazy cat woman. He lives with my mum and my brother. I miss my family and a lot of my friends live in Australia and New Zealand. I miss the earthiness of this part of the world and peoples’ attitude to training and living. I’m trying to get myself in a position with work where I can come back enough though.

GP: We’ve heard a little bit about CliniqueFIT “phase two”, which is pretty exciting. You’ve said you’d like them to make a post-workout bronzer…

KG: [Laughs] I would ideally like to… that’s the great thing about Clinique, they’re such a respected brand, I feel like they really want to be making products that people really want and use, so I’m hoping that maybe in the next range that we can have even more in it.

CliniqueFIT is available now exclusively at Sephora Australia and Clinique.com.au.

THE SCENTS THESE INFLUENCERS LOVE ON THEIR PARTNERS

“What scent do you love on your partner and why?”

We asked some of our favourite influencers this simple question and we did not get a single crossover. Granted, the sample size was small but there’s something to be said for what we’re attracted to on our lover. It’s as unique as they are.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day (for those obliged), here are some ideas…

      [responsive imageid=’26949′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“I love this Maison Martin Margiela Replica Jazz Club scent (coming soon to MECCA) because it has a rich spicy yet smooth scent. It smells very masculine with hints of leather and rum but balanced with the sweetness of vanilla. I have never been a fan of a light scent on a man. The more rich, the sexier.”
      @Brooketestoni, Founder of Rylan Studio.

      [responsive imageid=’26957′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“I bought Nathan Oud Wood by Tom Ford for Christmas, and he pulls it out for date nights and special occasions. It’s super sexy, woody and masculine… but I have to say, there’s nothing I love more than coming home and into bed with the scent of his Dove deodorant. It’s smells clean, safe and like home.”
      – Yan Chan (@_YanYanChan), Documenter and Content Creator.

      [responsive imageid=’26951′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“My partner Taj is a real manly man, and to be honest I love his natural scent. He smells rugged, masculine and always smells like the salty ocean (as that is where he spends most of his life). If I had to pick a favourite scent of his for our nights out, it would have to be La Nuit De L’Homme by Yves Saint Laurent. It isn’t too over powering and there’s something about it that makes him a level more attractive than he already is!”
@Rebecca.Jobson, Founder of Mini Marley Kidswear.

      [responsive imageid=’26952′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“My husband Rich wears the scent he wore on our wedding almost everyday and I absolutely love it. Its Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut, which I picked out for him because the scent actually reminded me of him.”
      – Sara Crampton (@Harperandharley), Founder of The Undone Store.

      [responsive imageid=’26950′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“I love when my fiancé wears rich, woody scents like Tom Ford Tobacco Oud. They instantly make him sexy (than he already is). I think there is something really attractive about a man who appreciates fine fragrance and Mathew Wilson and Tom Ford are two of them.”
      –  @EleanorPendleton, Founder & Editor-in-Chief of Gritty Pretty.

Do You Really Need A Jade Face Roller In Your Life?

If it feels like jade rollers are following you online – being talked about by all your favourites on insta-stories, YouTube and in real life – you’re not going crazy.

Jade rollers are far from “new”, but they’re having a Spice Girls-style resurgence right now thanks to models, makeup artists and influencers with great skin vouching for the tool’s detoxing benefits.

      Skeptical? Perplexed? Curious?

For more details, we spoke to Jeannie Bourke, founder of Venustus beauty space, who uses Jade Rollers in her treatments and also sells them on her e-store. “Jade Rollers date back to the 6th and 7th century China, so it’s nothing new but how it is being used now is,” she explains.

      BEAUTY EDITOR’S TOP PICKS – JANUARY 2018

As beauty editors, we get to trial A LOT of beauty products.

      Hey, someone’s gotta do it. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

To be completely honest, a lot of what we test passes as mediocre. The beauty market is a competitive – and repetitive – space so it takes something remarkable to stand out. And when we do find something that impresses us, it’s worth sharing.

100% unsponsored, 100% tested by us, 100% would recommend, read our top picks below:

Want more Beauty Editor top picks? You’ll find them here and here.

      [responsive imageid=’26893′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive][responsive imageid=’26894′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      HydroPeptide NIMNI Cream, $220
“At night, I like to treat myself (and not just with red wine and chocolate!). Two to three times a week, I’ve been applying a retinol cream to REALLY get my skin glowing the next morning. For the record, retinol (which is a technical term for Vitamin A), unclogs pores, boosts collagen to reduce fine lines, and speeds cell turnover to even out discolouration. It’s strong stuff yet it can break down in sunlight, which is why retinol and retinoids are still best worn at night—to make sure they aren’t rendered inactive. It’s the ultimate skin loving, youth-inducing ingredient. This face cream also features Vitamin C (hello brighter complexion) and Amino Acids (kicks your cells energy into fifth gear). I’ve been testing this for 4 weeks and I noticed my skin was more hydrated the morning after and brighter all round within 2 weeks.” – Eleanor, Editor & Founder

MECCA Cosmetica Artistry Eyelash Curler, $25
“I’ve been in a monogamous relationship with my eyelash curler, Shu Uemura’s cult one, till now. With just one clamp, I managed to get my Asian-straight camel-lashes to curl up like little macaronis. Got me goooood.”  – Wendy, Beauty Editor

      Ocinium Elemental A + C + E Serum, $90
“Having oily skin, I find even the most modest day serums too heavy for daily wear in the humid summer months. Cue: Ocinium Elemental A + C + E Serum. This antioxidant-filled brightening potion is light enough for the day, and gives my skin that post-workout glow sans grease factor. As an added bonus, Ocinium is an Australian owned brand using naturally active ingredients. I’ve use it every single day for the last month.” – Hannah, Editorial Intern

      [responsive imageid=’26891′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Dior Lip Glow in ‘101 Matte Raspberry’, $49
“I’ve been using Dior Lip Glow 001 since 2009 when it first launched and I was working as the Beauty Editor at FAMOUS magazine. During 2011 – 2014 whilst I was Beauty Editor at InStyle magazine, I would nominate it for an InStyle 101 Best Beauty Buy Award each year – and I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute now. Fortunately, for fans like me, the range has expanded and now comes in two more finishes: matte (which is still so creamy) and halo (pearlescent for gloss that is more sheeny rather than sticky). What I love most about this balm is that when applied it automatically adjusts to your skin’s pH level creating your own custom shade. This new version in ‘Raspberry’ gives a blurring effect that enhances lips without giving the impression you are wearing makeup, which I love!” – Eleanor, Editor & Founder

Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior Plumping Mask, $82
“I’ll admit it, as a woman in her early 20s, I’m probably not the demographic in mind for this new mask in the Wrinkle Warrior range. But, being a sucker for all things Somerville, I had to put it to the test. After 10 minutes, my skin looked visibly plumper, hydrated and my overall skin texture and elasticity was markedly improved. This is my post-event, skin-resurrection mask.”  – Hannah, Editorial Intern

Alpha-H Vitamin B Serum with Copper Tripeptide, $99
“I’ve almost out of this and I am dreading the day I squeeze the dropper and nothing comes out. While it claims it great repairing skin and protecting it from environmental aggressors, I found it did wonders for reducing acne inflammation thanks to a heavy dose of calming Niacinamide (vitamin B3), Copper Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera and Calendula. My redness disappeared in seconds, which I find better than piling on a cosmetic colour corrector. Will re-purchase.” – Wendy, Beauty Editor

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Foundation, $58
“I’m all about foundations that let your skin look like, oh I don’t know, skin! I’m a fan of freckles and using cosmetics as a way of caring for and enhancing the features that make you, you. This foundation is perfect for summer as it’s ultra lightweight (it literally pours out like water) and is best applied using a damp BeautyBlender sponge. The best part is it’s packed with hyaluronic acid so it hydrates your face whilst you wear it. Winning!” – Eleanor, Editor & Founder

      BEAUTY TALK: RAE MORRIS

The reason Rae Morris is one of Australia’s favourite makeup artists is because she spends more time teaching and less time preaching.

To quote award-winning beauty editor (and founder of this site), Eleanor Pendleton, “[Morris] the is one makeup artist I interview that I still learn something new from”. The fast-talking, hand-waving, exuberant  beauty oracle isn’t afraid to get technical, which is why she is one of the only experts who won’t give you a beauty tip you can Google and find 20 other entries on.

It is this winning personality that must’ve convinced one of only two living Japanese calligraphy brush craft masters to exclusively create state-of-the-art makeup brushes for her, an honour not lost on Morris. “These brushes are a piece of history! This man is one of the last LIVING masters. People, don’t you get it?!” she exclaims during our chat.

Today, Morris’ Jishaku brush collection launches into MECCA Cosmetica, the first time it’s ever had a physical presence anywhere. We highly recommend you go feel it for yourself. For the top makeup artist, whose career accolades include four times Australian Makeup Artist of The Year, best-selling author and longest serving Makeup Director for L’Oreal Paris, this day is a dream come true. “MECCA is like home,” Morris says of the partnership.

Gritty Pretty caught up with the celebrated makeup artist last week to discuss what makes her brushes so damn special, which ones to invest in, and her holy grail beauty buys.

      [responsive imageid=’26761′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

GRITTY PRETTY: Since your last book, Makeup Masterclass (which is excellent, by the way), what have you been up to?

RAE MORRIS: The brushes have been one of the biggest things. I’ve had them for about six or seven years now, but they have evolved. They were made by Korean technicians and then moved to Shanghai and now they’re made in Japan. The reason for the evolution is I started to get copied [by other brands]. I had a patent but to fight it in court was just too difficult.

GP: And you don’t want to spend all your money on that either…

RM: Look, Louis Vuitton can’t [stop knock offs] so I had to do something that no one could do or copy me. People can obviously copy the the magnetic function, so I wanted to find the world’s best brush maker.

In Japan, they have what’s called a ‘Master of Craft’ award, which you can only be a samurai sword maker or a calligraphy brush maker to qualify for. I found out that there are only two men left in the world that are a Master of Craft and one of them is the man behind these brushes. So I can now claim that I have brushes made by one of the only living Masters. The other man is 108, so we couldn’t quite get him.

Brushes can sell for $10,000 to $100,000 a brush in Japan. And what makes them so special is they’re all hand-done, but also the brush has to have so much precision that if you put it into wet paint once, you can lift it and put pressure and every brush stroke is smooth and blended for you. My brushes have calligraphy technology in them. For example, what would take a standard good makeup-artist brand brush 10-20 strokes to get black blended, mine would take 3 strokes.

GP: That reminds me of the Kill Bill movies, there’s a samurai sword maker and he’s vowed not to make anymore swords – but he does for Uma Thurman’s character. Did it take much convincing in your situation? Did he have any conditions?

RM: It took a lot. [Brush-making] is one of the oldest crafts and calligraphy brushes are the hardest to make. To give you an idea, to make a chemist-brand brush takes 3 to 5, maximum 7 steps. Up to 20 steps is a expensive, high-end over-the counter brush. Calligraphy brushes are 90, and mine are 72 steps.

When I went to see him, I had to be introduced. I found the most amazing blogger, Sweet Makeup Temptations. She only does reviews on very high end brushes (she’s got $20,000 brushes) and she’s a very good client of Japanese brushes. She knew him so I got the intro that way, otherwise I would have never gotten in. His son-in-law also studied in Australia for a year so he had a bit of that Australianess.

They originally said no actually, because I think what he thought was that I just wanted to make a simple makeup brush. He also originally did not let me have the magnetic function, which was so difficult because of the weight to get right ergonomically, but they agreed to do it in the end. I did ask them, why did you say yes, and I think he’s getting older and he’s got younger family members but he just said he liked my character and the fact that I wanted to keep the standard so high. And he promised me too that he would never do this for anybody else.

GP: Let’s quickly segue into your personal beauty routine, which I think a lot of people are interested in. What’s your skincare regime?

I do love the La Mer The Moisturising Soft Cream. I’m on Roaccutane right now so I have to use really over the top moisturising. I love Darphin’s serums. And this is my new favourite, the French Girl oil moisturiser. [Morris runs across the room to grab her overnight bag, filled mini unbranded sample pots which she’s labelled and popped products into.] Oh My God, it’s AMAZING. Because I’ve got skin that reacts, sometimes organic does not work on me either but I haven’t had a problem with these. Oh and my favourite lip balm is the MECCA Lip Balm.

GP: Oh, how are you finding Roaccutane?

RM: Great! Oh it’s the best thing I ever did, but I’m on a really low dose. Apparently it’s anti-ageing as well. I know the depression thing can come up but I get more depressed if I have bad skin and because I work with dermatologists for my brushes, I’m around them all the time and they’re like “Rae, go on it!”.

GP: What fragrance do you wear?

RM: I wear a men’s ones – Tom Ford, Maison Francis Kurkdijan Paris Lumière Noire Pour Homme, or Commes des Garcon Wonderwood.

GP: When you’ve got a work event like this, what do you wear on your skin?

RM: I don’t really do a lot. Chantecaille is my favourite foundation. It’s the best thing in the whole wide world. My new discovery is those NARS concealers in the pots. I always say, if you’re going to use a concealer, use the strongest coverage but less of it. And my favourite lip balm is the strawberry MECCA one, it’s got sunscreen in it. And if I want a bit of glow, my new favourite thing is Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist. It’s so fine; it sits on the skin and doesn’t look artificial.

GP: What is your most repurchased beauty product?

RM: Ellis Faas Eye Colour 105. You can ring up any of my assistants, I use it on every shoot. It is the holy grail of eye colour.

      [responsive imageid=’26768′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive] [responsive imageid=’26767′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

GP: What brushes should a beginner start with from your range?

RM: The Radiance Brush for foundation; the Kubuki is great for any powder makeup; and a pointed eye brush like #8.

GP: I’ve seen a lot of makeup artists use your brushes on set.

RM: I originally made the Radiance Brush for Guido [Palau, Hair stylist and Global Creative Director for Redken] and his team. He orders them every season. What he used to use it for is if you have a ponytail with fly-aways, spray a bit of hairspray and use this to brush it down. NikkieTutorials (vlogger) bought the range and it sold out. Lady Gaga’s makeup artist bought the set and paid for it; Val Garland, Guido Palau, Peter Phillips, Mario (Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist) posted about it …it’s just mind-blowing.

GP: Final question: was it hard to get the brand into MECCA? How did those discussions happen?

RM: I love this story someone told me, it’s so magic. What MECCA do when they release new brands is they put all this new stuff out and they bring in a group of people to judge everything –  to see what they would like in store and they have to score it from 1 to 10. I got number one from every single person. I’ve never had that before.

MECCA feels like home, and it is a dream come true. I’ve had other big companies approach me and I wouldn’t have my brushes anywhere else. To be amongst the brands [stocked at MECCA] is a dream because as a makeup artist, my working kit is MECCA.

Rae Morris’ makeup brushes are now available at MECCA Cosmetica nationwide and MECCA online.
