BEAUTY EDITOR’S TOP PICKS – JANUARY 2018

As beauty editors, we get to trial A LOT of beauty products.

Hey, someone’s gotta do it. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

To be completely honest, a lot of what we test passes as mediocre. The beauty market is a competitive – and repetitive – space so it takes something remarkable to stand out. And when we do find something that impresses us, it’s worth sharing.

100% unsponsored, 100% tested by us, 100% would recommend, read our top picks below:

HydroPeptide NIMNI Cream, $220
“At night, I like to treat myself (and not just with red wine and chocolate!). Two to three times a week, I’ve been applying a retinol cream to REALLY get my skin glowing the next morning. For the record, retinol (which is a technical term for Vitamin A), unclogs pores, boosts collagen to reduce fine lines, and speeds cell turnover to even out discolouration. It’s strong stuff yet it can break down in sunlight, which is why retinol and retinoids are still best worn at night—to make sure they aren’t rendered inactive. It’s the ultimate skin loving, youth-inducing ingredient. This face cream also features Vitamin C (hello brighter complexion) and Amino Acids (kicks your cells energy into fifth gear). I’ve been testing this for 4 weeks and I noticed my skin was more hydrated the morning after and brighter all round within 2 weeks.” – Eleanor, Editor & Founder

MECCA Cosmetica Artistry Eyelash Curler, $25
“I’ve been in a monogamous relationship with my eyelash curler, Shu Uemura’s cult one, till now. With just one clamp, I managed to get my Asian-straight camel-lashes to curl up like little macaronis. Got me goooood.”  – Wendy, Beauty Editor

Ocinium Elemental A + C + E Serum, $90
“Having oily skin, I find even the most modest day serums too heavy for daily wear in the humid summer months. Cue: Ocinium Elemental A + C + E Serum. This antioxidant-filled brightening potion is light enough for the day, and gives my skin that post-workout glow sans grease factor. As an added bonus, Ocinium is an Australian owned brand using naturally active ingredients. I’ve use it every single day for the last month.” – Hannah, Editorial Intern

Dior Lip Glow in ‘101 Matte Raspberry’, $49
“I’ve been using Dior Lip Glow 001 since 2009 when it first launched and I was working as the Beauty Editor at FAMOUS magazine. During 2011 – 2014 whilst I was Beauty Editor at InStyle magazine, I would nominate it for an InStyle 101 Best Beauty Buy Award each year – and I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute now. Fortunately, for fans like me, the range has expanded and now comes in two more finishes: matte (which is still so creamy) and halo (pearlescent for gloss that is more sheeny rather than sticky). What I love most about this balm is that when applied it automatically adjusts to your skin’s pH level creating your own custom shade. This new version in ‘Raspberry’ gives a blurring effect that enhances lips without giving the impression you are wearing makeup, which I love!” – Eleanor, Editor & Founder

Kate Somerville Wrinkle Warrior Plumping Mask, $82
“I’ll admit it, as a woman in her early 20s, I’m probably not the demographic in mind for this new mask in the Wrinkle Warrior range. But, being a sucker for all things Somerville, I had to put it to the test. After 10 minutes, my skin looked visibly plumper, hydrated and my overall skin texture and elasticity was markedly improved. This is my post-event, skin-resurrection mask.”  – Hannah, Editorial Intern

Alpha-H Vitamin B Serum with Copper Tripeptide, $99
“I’ve almost out of this and I am dreading the day I squeeze the dropper and nothing comes out. While it claims it great repairing skin and protecting it from environmental aggressors, I found it did wonders for reducing acne inflammation thanks to a heavy dose of calming Niacinamide (vitamin B3), Copper Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera and Calendula. My redness disappeared in seconds, which I find better than piling on a cosmetic colour corrector. Will re-purchase.” – Wendy, Beauty Editor

Estee Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Foundation, $58
“I’m all about foundations that let your skin look like, oh I don’t know, skin! I’m a fan of freckles and using cosmetics as a way of caring for and enhancing the features that make you, you. This foundation is perfect for summer as it’s ultra lightweight (it literally pours out like water) and is best applied using a damp BeautyBlender sponge. The best part is it’s packed with hyaluronic acid so it hydrates your face whilst you wear it. Winning!” – Eleanor, Editor & Founder
