The Products We Would Take If We Were Stranded On An Island

The scenario is this: you’re stuck on a desert island. You’re allowed a handful of beauty products (two, we decided). What do you take?

Do you go for the pragmatic sunscreen-and-moisturiser combo, or do you strategically take a facial mist and oil? Or, do you simply pack a Tangle Teezer and tinted lip balm and hope for the best?

The Gritty Pretty team had a go answering this damned hypothetical, and the choices for beauty survival were a mixed bag of practical and interesting…

ELIZA, ADVERTISING & PARTNERSHIPS DIRECTOR
“My first pick is Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream Skin Protectant , a balm that is both soothing and moisturising and can be applied to lips, face and any irritated dry skin areas of the body. I’ll also take Nivea Firming Body Lotion Q10 Plus. I am obsessed with this product and apply after showering daily. It leaves my skin hydrated and soft and I really notice the difference when I don’t use it. Meghan Markle swears by it too (just sayin’).”

WENDY, BEAUTY EDITOR
“Firstly, stock me up with endless hair ties because if I have to wear my hair down the whole time, I think that’ll just drive me crazy. I’m also going to bring Biologi Hydration Body Serum along for the ride. Slather that all over my body and face. I don’t wear it normally because it’s a bit too rich with all the other products I’ve got going on, but used exclusively under the circumstances, I think it’s the best solution. The vitamin C-rich formula promotes collagen, deeply hydrates, reduces cellulite, and helps fight pigmentation and free radical damage from the sun. I’ve been told its so hydrating, it’d a waste to use moisturiser on top and it’s also 100% natural. FACT: I saw the founder nonchalantly put some in his mouth, so if sustenance is low…”

ELEANOR, FOUNDER & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
“On a desert island, fresh water is key for survival. If I had a large bottle of Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray handy, I could use it to refresh my skin, keep me cool and likely drink it if I was on the borders of desperation. I’d also likely have a bottle of IT Cosmetics CC Cream because it’s SPF 50 and if I am likely to be rescued then at least I’ll look great.”

LAUREN, LIFESTYLE EDITOR
MECCA Cosmetica In A Good Light SPF30+ Tinted Moisturiser is one of the best products I’ve ever used – it’s moisturising, light-weight and SPF 30+, but also has a light illuminating tint and offers the perfect amount of coverage for someone who doesn’t like a heavy foundation. My other pick is Glossier Balm Dotcom (original). It’s hydrating, long lasting and has a really smooth, non-sticky texture which I love – exactly what you would want and need stranded on a desert island, and everyday.”

ERICA, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
“I’d take TRILOGY Rose Hip Oil because it offers an awesome overnight moisture surge; I wake up to soft, moisturised skin. I would also take ECO Tan Face Tan Water, a gradual liquid self-tanning toner. As much as I’d love to wear SPF all day, I would still love some colour. This product gives a slight natural glow overnight and seems to help clear up any spots as well. Bonus!”

MORGAN, ART DIRECTOR
“I’d take the Jurlique Sun Specialist SPF 40+ Sunscreen. If I’m on a deserted island, I want to be tanning as much as possible. #gymtanlaundry. I’d also take the Bioderma Atoderm Lip Balm because I naturally have incredibly dry lips, so when I am in salt water or in the sun I need to hydrate them as much as possible and this lip balm actually works!”
