Vanity Affairs: Juliet Souter From Marle On Dry Body Brushing And The Beauty Of A Good Bar Soap

Warning: reading on may cause spending of excessive funds on really good beauty products.

Welcome to Vanity Affairs—a series where we document the beauty routines of notable people.

There are some people who have an I-can’t-put-my-finger-on-it kind of glow—a certain je ne sais quoi, if you will. You know the ones—their hair falls just right, their skin is dewy but never shiny, and they seem to exude confidence.

In the interest of public service, we’ve set about tracking down these actors, influencers, models, founders, entrepreneurs, musicians, spokespeople (and more!!) to find out their secrets. Have you got your pen and paper ready?

Previously, we’ve spoken to Rozalia RussianLara Fells, Jules Sebastian, Georgia Fowler, Jonathan Van Ness and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Today, we’re raiding the beauty cupboard of fashion designer Juliet Souter.

Souter is the co-founder and creative director of sustainable fashion label Marle. The New Zealand-based brand is loved for its approach to pared-back luxury, with beautiful pieces you’ll want to wear forever that won’t break the bank. Given Souter’s slow yet stylish approach to fashion, we were curious about how she approaches beauty.

Here, she shares every single product she uses in her daily beauty regimen.

SKIN

I usually start my day with a morning cuddle with my two children, they are our alarm clock. Depending on how early that is, they may go back to sleep and if they do I get up and go for a walk either on the beach or around the streets.  Once home, I will have hot water and a fresh slice of lemon then have The Beauty Chef Adaptogen and Collagen Boost.

I have used the Eve Lom Cleanser for years now, I love it so much, along with the ritual of using it. I massage it into my face and leave it on in the shower, then I use a muslin cloth to wash it off. I feel it gives my face a really effective clean whilst being gentle and hydrating.

I then use the Codage Serum 1. Since using this product I have noticed such a difference in my skin. It really prolongs hydration throughout the day and I have noticed a visible reduction of fine lines.

Following this, I use the Skin Reset by Emma Lewisham which mostly helps even out my skin tone, and I add in 3 or 4 drops of Drunk Elephant Luxury Marula Oil. This is my hero product! It’s so lovely and hydrating but not too heavy. In the mornings, I then top this off with Tizo spf40 which has Zinc in it. It took a while to get used to it but now I won’t go without it. I have very sensitive skin with Subtype 2 Rosacea which has the appearance of acne. I keep it at bay with these gentle products and also regular laser treatments.

[At night] I cleanse again with Eve Lom, follow with Codage Serum 1 and then I use the Saturate moisturiser by Xcell, a New Zealand based medical skincare company that my laser technician has developed. It has such a rich and luxurious texture that is super hydrating.”

HAIR

“I’m a big Kevin Murphy fan! I use Angel Wash and Rinse along with Leave-In Repair, and if I’m blow drying my hair I use Heated Defense although I mostly air dry my hair now.  When my hair feels particularly dry I use Sans Ceuticals Activator 7 and the Moisture and Protein Infusion 20.”

BODY

“I love dry brushing—I don’t do it all the time but when I do it makes such a difference to my skin and just how I feel in general due to the lymphatic system clearing of it. Call me traditional, but I love a soap bar—I use the Orris Le Botaniste, it gently exfoliates and the mint in it is so nice and fresh. I then moisturise using Le Labo Hinoki body cream—it’s another staple in my cabinet. I love the fragrance so much, it’s like a perfume without being overpowering and the cream is extremely hydrating.  It’s been hard to come by over the last year though which has been frustrating.”

FRAGRANCE

“I have started using Elixir by Astier de Villette, it has a wonderful familiar note to it but it’s also lovely and fresh.”

MAKEUP

I prefer a no-makeup look for everyday. It suits me and my busy lifestyle as I don’t have the luxury of time in the mornings with two little ones. I have used Nars Sheer Glow for a number of years and I love how hydrating it is – it doesn’t move throughout the day and feels like it just melts into your skin. I also use Nars Radiant Creamy concealer for any blemishes, I love how natural this product looks on the skin.

For brows, I use the Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil which is a dual-ended powder to wax pencil which helps shape and define my brows, something I’ll never leave the house without doing!

If I am needing something a little extra for my everyday look I use the Dior Diorshow Mascara which is a staple in my cabinet. I love it because it is easily buildable without clumping. Then I’ll opt for the Mac Paint Pot in Groundwork, for my eyes and a bit of Nars Bronzer in Laguna under my cheekbones for a sculpt.”
