Our Go-To Australian Mobile Beauty Salons

Trying to find the time to squeeze in a facial, manicure, or massage?

We get it—beauty appointments (albeit much deserved) can often fall by the wayside due to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But imagine if you could have them take place in the comfort of your own home, or even your office, minimising travel time and working around your schedule?

That’s exactly what these entrepreneurial businesswomen had in mind when they their created mobile beauty offerings, with the aim to provide the same relaxing experience and level of service you expect from an in-salon treatment.

Here, we’ve rounded up some of our trusted spots around the country.

      [responsive imageid=’31351′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      PURELY POLISHED

We can’t count the number of times we were in need of a mani/pedi, but yet haven’t been able to find one close enough to the GP office to pop in on our lunch break or after work. Which is just one of the reasons that founder and CEO Iman Davamoni created Purely Polished—as a busy working mother, she realised the demand for mobile beauty services was on the rise. Purely Polished’s highly skilled technicians service both Sydney and Melbourne, and offer everything from a deluxe pedicure, a classic manicure (with the options of SNS, gel, and acrylic, too), and also tanning and lash enhancements, that you can experience from home, the office or even a hotel room if you’re on vacay.

      STILL BEAUTY

It seems like an indulgence, but it shouldn’t be, which is why Still Beauty founder Joanna Beecher has carved out a niche for herself within the mobile beauty space by offering massages only. Reaffirming that massage should be considered beauty maintenance for your body, Beecher and her team come to your home and customise your massage treatment to your wants and needs, believing that every individual body has different concerns. Eyes On The Prize

Forget garish glitter or scary sparkle.

These high-impact eye looks are both sophisticated and party-time appropriate, offering a bold twist on classic trends.

      [responsive imageid=’31330′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      WINGING IT

There’s nothing wrong with a classic black cat eye, but why not switch up your signature black liquid for this smoked-out cobalt blue? Experiment with colour further and pair it with a contrasting colour along the lower lashline.

      [responsive imageid=’31331′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      GET GLOSSY

What’s not to love about this lilac eyeshadow? Applied over the mobile lid and topped with a hint of creamy illuminator in the inner corners of the eyes, it provides a subtle gleam of colour at every turn. Giraudeau suggests using a brown liner along the lower lash line for added dimension and a little added polish.

Beauty Q&A: What’s the Difference Between Natural, Clean, Vegan and Certified Organic Beauty?

      You asked, we delivered.

What was once called the clean beauty “movement” is now a booming industry, catering to a huge majority of women (and men) who are moving away from mainstream beauty brands and opting for natural, certified organic and even vegan beauty products.

The good news is that there are so many beauty brands (including some amazing homegrown companies) that are jumping on the bandwagon, nixing the nasties and animal by-products, and proving that they can be just as efficacious as their not-so-natural counterparts.

But here’s where it gets tricky. Deciphering the coding, words, and ingredients of beauty products is often a minefield, says Melbourne-based mobile makeup artist and author of the Skin Journal Georgina Alexandra. “When we see a product that is labelled natural, certified organic or vegan, it doesn’t necessarily mean these products are free from toxic ingredients—this is difficult to understand, because we want to trust what the packaging is telling us. Due to very little regulations in Australia, any brand can label their product natural or organic without facing any repercussions, so understand exactly what each different sector of clean beauty means can take a little time.”

      Let’s break it down.

      [responsive imageid=’31297′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“This is something that more and more of my clients are asking for,” says Nicole Manning, Director of ONDA Beauty Australia in Sydney’s Paddington. “This eliminates all animal-derived ingredients—personally I stick to products that have been accredited by PETA—they offer two stamps; cruelty free and vegan,” she says. Alexandra agrees, however notes that just because a product is marked vegan, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t contain toxic or chemicals, so this requires further investigation if you also wish your products to be chemical-free.

      [responsive imageid=’31294′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]
“Everyone has a different view on clean beauty which is rather exciting and fits with my attitude to beauty generally—it’s yours to play with,” says Manning. Typically free of any nasties, “clean beauty products are those without synthetic fragrance, parabens, sulphates as an absolute minimum, but this can include—if any—makeup you wear, too!”

      [responsive imageid=’31299′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’31295′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

While using natural products is becoming more and more popular, just because a product claims that it’s natural, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the product contains all-natural ingredients, explains Alexandra. “A brand only needs to use one by-product of anything natural—be it an oil, leaf extract, herb—to be classified as ‘natural’ but remember, again, it doesn’t need to be toxic-free to earn the label,” says Alexandra. “For products specifically, I focus on understanding and trusting the brand and its philosophy, knowing how and where they source their various ingredients and the drive behind doing what they do,” adds Manning. “On a technical level, it might mean products made without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, or those that contain no preservatives. Equally, it might mean sustainable or eco-friendly skincare, which sources ingredients in a way which have not been altered from their natural state.”

      [responsive imageid=’31298′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’31296′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“Philosophically, organic means working with nature, not against it,” explains Manning. “Organic beauty is the formulation of cosmetic products using organically farmed ingredients. These ingredients are grown without the use of Genetically Modified Organisms, herbicides, synthetic fertilisers and other products that have not typically been a part of the evolution of that ingredient. As with food, every country has different regulations for organic certification, meaning that a product created and certified and in one place may not meet the standards for organic certification somewhere else. ‘Certified organic’ status guarantees that everything about the product has been produced organically and contains only organic ingredients.” You should notice a small symbol on the packaging to signify if a product has adhered to the strict guidelines to achieve certified organic status.

Tell us, how important is using natural, certified organic, or vegan beauty products to you? Do you have any favourite products or brands?

Kristin Ess Says You Can Mix and Match Your Haircare Products (And Brands)

      You’ve got our attention.

Back before major beauty websites were even really a thing, there was The Beauty Department. Cleverly co-curated by hairstylist Kristin Ess, it was—and still is—seen as a go-to resource for creating the hairstylist’s range of effortless styles, including those braids and of course, her ‘Ess Waves,’ which became Lauren Conrad and Lucy Hale’s signature hairstyle.

      [responsive imageid=’31240′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Fast forward nearly a decade and Ess has released her own eponymous haircare and styling range. Now let’s be real—hairstylists creating their own hair range isn’t exactly an entirely new concept, and even then it’s typically born from said hairstylist not “loving” the products they work with, or they’re looking to find a gap in the market.

Interestingly, Ess is coming at this from a totally different angle.

Her range was created because she was inundated—both on her own social channels and over at The Beauty Department—for more hair care and styling products that were a little easier on the wallet. “I’ve always received the same feedback,” explains Ess. “I would get told, ‘I love your tutorials but I wish there were great products that were more affordable.’ When the opportunity came about to create my line, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and where I wanted to position myself.”

      [responsive imageid=’31238′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Encompassing both styling and care, the Kristin Ess range, now available at Priceline with prices ranging from $19-$25, features everything from workable texturising sprays to leave-in conditioners, purple-toned products to banish brassy tones in blondes, and also a lightweight but nourishing mask. Yes, they’re affordable, but Ess didn’t skimp on the ingredients—they’re infused with the likes of marine algae and chia seeds, both known for their nourishing and reparative properties. “Using quality ingredients was important to me,” says Ess. “Throughout my career I’ve seen what happens when you upgrade to better ingredients. Marine algae is a colour protectant and chia seeds are one of the richest sources of omega-3—which means mega moisture—and helps to combat dry, brittle hair. The products [are also] sulfate-free (sulfates strip the natural oils from inside the hair) and we need those to maintain overall hair health and to avoid long-term damage.”

The even better news is that Ess doesn’t expect you to buy all of her line. Not at once, anyway. They’re designed to be mixed and matched with your existing products and other brands, which is something, hand on heart, I don’t think I have been told by a hairstylist promoting their own products. “I created these so they could be incorporated to your current routine because that’s way more practical than starting with the entire line-up. You can build your collection quickly or slowly,” she explains.

      [responsive imageid=’31239′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

It’s also thanks to her creative flair that she made her styling products be completely re-workable, and therefore ideal for budding hairstylists or those wanting to recreate Ess’ most coveted hairstyles. “I love creating hairstyles that can morph from one look to another,” she says. “These products are lightweight, crushable and designed to layer, which helps build your style over a multiple days without making your hair feel too gritty, dirty or product-heavy.”

And yet while she—and team GP—encourage you to experiment with different hairstyles and trends, she also wants you to embrace the hair you have. “I know it sounds a little clichè but it’s a true struggle to try and have straight hair everyday if you’re naturally curly and vice versa. There are hundreds of tutorials out there for YOUR hair type. Learn how to use what you have and learn to love it.”

Tell us—have you purchased any of Kristin Ess’ products? What did you think?

      Gritty Pretty Welcomes Christophe Robin

Introducing Christophe Robin — one of the latest beauty editor-approved brands available in our Gritty Pretty e-boutique.

Colourist Christophe Robin knows a thing or two about good hair colour—with a career spanning decades, he’s tended to the tresses of Elle Macpherson, Catherine Deneuve and Kylie Minogue, bringing his signature brand of natural looking colour and je nais se quois to every strand.

      [responsive imageid=’31234′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Based out of his salon in Paris, Robin created his cult eponymous line 20 years ago with a focus on colour and care, armed with the knowledge that they are at the crux of creating (and maintaining) healthy hair. Harnessing the benefits of natural resources and nixing the nasties, the Christophe Robin range spans a variety of different products that contain ingredients such as lavender, lemon, chamomile and pickly pear seed oil, which is found in his iconic Regenerating Mask With Rare Prickly Seed Oil—it’s not only a source of intense nourishment for your lengths, but also helps to create a vibrant finish.

      Bridal Beauty: Montarna Pitt

A wedding is the perfect excuse to splurge on your skin, but we get that it can be overwhelming. There are a lot of treatments and not a lot of time. That’s why Gritty Pretty introduced Bridal Beauty, a section dedicated to word-of-mouth bridal beauty tips from those in the know.

In this edition, we’re taking you behind the pre-wedding beauty routine of Australian lifestyle publicist Montarna Pitt (née McDonald), who wed her longtime beau Nick Pitt at Redleaf, Wollombi in the Hunter Valley last December.

From Pitt’s fairytale gown by Israeli designer Inbal Dror, to her sophisticated yet natural beauty look, trust us—you’ll want to add these snaps to your Pinterest board (and take notes).

      MY WEDDING-SKIN PREP…

“I really ramped things up on the skincare front three months out from our wedding. This worked quite well for me because it was early Spring, and my skin responds so much better to treatments and regimes in the warmer weather.”

      MY SKINCARE REGIME…

“I committed to the RATIONALE Essential Six regimen and continued with my usual skincare routine—cleansing, using a sensitive skin serum, moisturising and applying sunscreen. I booked monthly facial appointments at RATIONALE, and had fortnightly light treatment sessions at The Parlour Room in Sydney’s Randwick. I started mixing The Beauty Chef’s Collagen Inner Beauty Boost into my water daily, and also added a teaspoon of the Glow Inner Beauty Powder into my porridge—I found that this helped both my skin and my gut. Additionally, I got on board with self-care Sunday, taking time before the start of the week to soak in a bath and pamper my skin with a face mask. I used a mix of masks depending on how my skin was feeling; if it was dry I went for a hydrating mask or if my complexion was dull, I’d opt for a brightening formula.”

      I WOULD CHANGE…

“I wish I’d started working on my skin further out from the wedding—I had always planned to start six months ahead but time got away from me. I also had an allergic reaction two weeks from the wedding from a spray tan product I hadn’t used before. It gave me hives which wasn’t pleasant and stressed me out even more—I’m not precious, but maybe I should’ve been a little more conscious so close to the wedding! I quickly swapped back to Rodan + Fields Soothe Regimen to clear things up and within three days, the results were miraculous. It was my skin saviour.”

      MY WEDDING INSPIRATION…

“I went straight to my beautiful friends who’ve been married before me to find out what worked for them and what didn’t in the lead up to their special day. I’ve also got some amazingly talented friends in the industry who guided me on do’s and don’ts, as well as asking my mum—she has always worked in skincare.”

      MY MAKEUP ARTIST…

“Mia Hawkswell did my makeup. I’m lucky as I work with Mia regularly and she’s a close friend so the brief was a pretty ‘Mon look’—effortless with a polished edge.”

      MY HAIR STYLIST…

“Mia was in charge of my locks, too. I wanted my hair back for the ceremony because my dress had a lot of detail, plus the train, the veil and flowers. I still wanted hair to frame my face, so we decided on a low textured pony with strands out at the front, and we secured it in silver elastic to add a unique detail. At the reception I took my hair out—by this time I had removed my veil and the train from my dress and I felt the look could handle it. I wanted to feel like me on the day; my signature look but with a bridal touch.”

      MY LIPSTICK…

“I’m fussy when it comes to lipstick shades; I feel like it can make or break a look! In the lead up to the wedding, Mia and I experimented with a range of different shades from Hourglass, YSL lip gloss and M.A.C Cosmetics lipsticks. In the end, we took a bunch to the wedding so I could decide on the day—it was dependant on my skin and how bronzed I looked. Nick mentioned that he loved when I wore nude shades but I know it can sometimes make my lips disappear, so we had to use a liner and I opted for a pink nude using Sisley Phyto-Lip Twist Matte Tinted Balm in 19, layered with Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in No.1, plus Mecca Cosmetica Lip De Luscious with SPF 25 for hydration throughout the night.”

      MY FRAGRANCE…

“I always wear Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge EDP and was in a constant struggle in the lead up whether to wear that or Tom Ford Fucking Fabulous EDP, which my Mum had bought me as a gift for the wedding day. In the end I went with Tom Ford—I loved being able to use a gift that Mum had given me for the occasion. Nick wore Maison Margiela Jazz Club EDT.”

How To Ace Glossy Eyeshadow Like A Pro

      It’s perfect for party season.

Glossy eyeshadow. It’s one of those makeup looks you screenshot on the ‘gram and pin to your Pinterest board, but probably haven’t yet tried it for three reasons; 1) it’s the makeup equivalent of committing to a New Year’s resolution—you need to own it 2) it can be a little messy (read: sticky), and 3) let’s be honest; it falls into the too-tricky-to-try basket for every day wear.

But, with NYE upon us and a myriad of social functions to attend, there’s no time like the present to try it at home. Here, makeup artist Isabelle De Vries tells us how…

      [responsive imageid=’31011′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’31012′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Just like we recommend a primer to prolong the life of your foundation, the same rule applies for your eye makeup, so stock up. Steer clear of slippery or hydrating formulas, and opt for something like Smashbox Photo Finish 24 Hour Eye Shadow Primer or M.A.C Cosmetics Pro Longwear Paint Pots. These crease-proof formulas work to ensure the longevity of regular powder eyeshadow, so as you can imagine, they’re an absolute non-negotiable for glossy eyes.

Then, add your coloured shadow of choice. You can use any type of eyeshadow—just steer clear of any chunky glitter particles as they will move once the gloss is applied. The good news is that a gloss top coat will “intensify any colours, making them appear deeper and brighter,” says De Vries.

      [responsive imageid=’31010′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Now, the fun part. Firstly, find a formula that isn’t sticky, explains De Vries, as any stickiness will only increase when you are opening and closing your eyes. The good news is you probably already have something you can use as the gloss already sitting in your makeup bag—De Vries recommends Egyptian Magic Cream All Purpose Skin Cream, or even good old Vaseline. “For a dewy looking lid, I like to use my finger and pat it over the entire lid, or for a super wet look, apply it with a small flat concealer brush in a thick layer,” she says, which will also help to give a more precise finish. “I also recommend leaving a small gap between the gloss and the upper lash line to prevent it from running down [into your lashes],” she adds.

      [responsive imageid=’31009′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Of course, the rest of your makeup needs to fall in line. Steer clear of overly luminous skin—all that glow and gloss might lead you into disco ball territory—and instead, opt for a satin finish to your foundation. “I’m not a fan of overly matte skin, and this way you’ll see a beautiful contrast between the glossy eye and fresh skin,” says De Vries.

Tell us—will you be attempting the glossy eye?

At Home With Founder Of Mode Sportif, Deborah Symond O’Neil

Flooded with natural light, colourful art and global treasures, Deborah Symond O’Neil’s apartment in Sydney’s Elizabeth Bay is the epitome of harbourside living.

      [responsive imageid=’30976′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive

The moment retail entrepreneur Deborah Symond O’Neil greeted us at the entrance to her grand apartment in Sydney’s Elizabeth Bay, we knew we were in for a treat. Bubbling with enthusiasm, there’s a joyfulness to Symond O’Neil that radiates beyond her megawatt smile and directly in to her home.

      [responsive imageid=’30979′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Nestled in the whisper-quiet enclave of one of Sydney’s most exquisite harbouside suburbs, Elizabeth Bay, it’s little wonder Symond O’Neil loves where she lives. With its dress circle location just moments from the water and an easy wander to Sydney’s buzzing CBD, the quaint district provides the perfect balance for Symond O’Neil, who is the founder and director of Australian retailer Mode Sportif, and her husband Ned O’Neil.

      [responsive imageid=’30977′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“McElhone Reserve, the park opposite my building, is the most peaceful hideaway in Sydney, yet a two minute walk up the road takes you to the heart of Challis Avenue and some of my favourite restaurants in Sydney,” explains Symond O’Neil of the suburbs supreme location.

Three Youth-Enhancing Skin Treatments That Actually Work

      There’s something for everyone.

Suzie Hoitink knows more than a thing or two about some of our most common skin concerns. As an acne sufferer as both a teen and adult, the founder of Clear Complexion Clinics had forged a successful career as a registered nurse, but wanted real results from facial treatments to treat her skin, with the end goal being a healthy, clear complexion. Opening her first clinic in 2005, Clear Complexions Clinics has now grown to six locations, including Macquarie, Balmain, Mosman, and three situated throughout the ACT.

Not only are Susie and her team known for a tailored approach to skin health, but also for their all-encompassing menu of anti-ageing treatments. “Our clients are looking to repair damage, restore their skin closer to their chronological age, and gain the tools they need to keep their skin healthier in the future—we’ve focused on enhancing the beauty that a client already has, and instilling confidence,” says Hoitink.

The issue is that not everyone is looking to jump straight into the world of injectables when it comes to turning back the clock, which is why we asked Hoitink for three treatments that cater to all, starting from a completely non-invasive facial, to Botox.

      Book in for… “HydraFacial MD™.”
The lowdown… “The HydraFacial MD™ is a powerful four-step treatment, combining cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and hydration, while infusing your skin with antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, peptides and other essential nutrients.”
You’ll see benefits… “It’s a must for clients with sun damage, blackheads and whiteheads, enlarged pores, acne, uneven skin tone, and early ageing fine lines and wrinkles.”
You’ll need to hide away for… “Absolutely no time at all!”
You’ll see results… “Your skin looks radiant and nourished immediately after the treatment.”
You’ll need to pop in again… “As often as you like, but most clients will have HydraFacial MD™ monthly.”

      [responsive imageid=’31029′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Book in for… “Fraxel re:store Dual laser.”
The lowdown… “Fraxel is a fractionated laser that works by applying pinpricks of heat in the skin, which creates an injury below the surface. This then stimulates a repair and renewal process whereby the damaged cells are brought to the surface and shed, and new collagen and hyaluronic acid is generated.”
You’ll see benefits… “Fraxel significantly improves quality and overall skin health, so anyone who has prematurely aged their skin with too much sun exposure will benefit enormously from treatment. Not only will the skin be stronger and more hydrated, wrinkles will be softened and you’ll see a reduction in pigmentation. The overall effect is a noticeably younger complexion. Fraxel is also the gold standard treatment for acne, trauma or surgical scarring.”
You’ll need to hide away for… “It’s an important question, as it’s crucial that you know what to expect. You will have a healing phase of seven days, of which the first three to four days are the most obvious. You are extremely red post-procedure, with a sunburnt feeling. Mild swelling starts post-procedure, and is at its peak the morning after, lasting a day or so. The skin will feel rough for up to a week. This is actually a really positive thing as it’s all the dead and damaged cells shedding off the skin, leaving fresh, vibrant, healthy complexion.”
You’ll see results… “As early as two to four weeks post treatment, but the skin continues to improve as new collagen is stimulated for up to a year post-procedure.”
You’ll need to pop in again… “It depends on the extent of damage, and that’s part of the reason you need a consultation prior to your appointment. I have clients who have done three treatments, six weeks apart and others that just do a treatment once a year.”

      [responsive imageid=’31030′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

      Above: Thomas Puttick Dress.

      Book in for… “Anti-wrinkle injections.”
The lowdown… “Injectable anti-wrinkle treatments involve small amounts of botulinum toxin [Botox] injected into specific areas of the face and neck to weaken the muscle movement, preventing the muscles from contracting to form a wrinkle.”
You’ll see benefits… “Most clients come to fix their ‘angry looking lines’ between their eyebrows. Softening the ‘crow’s feet’ lines around the eyes and those ‘worry lines’ on the forehead are also common requests. What many clients are unaware of is how many other areas botulinum toxin can be used. ‘Scrunch lines’ on the nose, the downturn of the mouth, the ‘witchy chin’ and a ‘veiny’ looking neck can also be significantly improved using small amounts of expertly placed product.”
You’ll need to hide away for… “There is no downtime at all with anti-wrinkle injections.”
You’ll see results… “It take between two-to-five days typically for the results to start taking effect with full effect at two weeks.”
You’ll need to pop in again…“Most clients will repeat the treatment every three-to-four months.”

While treatments are all good and well, not maintaining a comprehensive skincare regimen at home is akin to sweating it out in the gym and consuming an unhealthy diet, says Hoitink. In other words, it’s virtually pointless, so it’s wise to first see a skin professional to determine what your skin needs, and work out an effective at-home routine that actually delivers results. “So much time and money can be wasted on using the wrong skincare for your skin type, and it can also further damage what we are trying to correct,” she explains.

CHANEL’s Spring/Summer 2019 Makeup Collection Gives Good Glow

      It’s well and truly

      [responsive imageid=’30994′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

And if you play by the makeup rules, the warmer weather signifies that it’s time to bring out the bold colours. While I would always say break those rules—I have as much time for a red lip in winter as I do in Summer—there is something about the rise in mercury that makes you want to step up your makeup game, particularly in the colour stakes. Think swapping foundation for a glow-enhancing tinted moisturiser, dialling up the luminosity, and working vibrant, juicy hues on your lips and lids—perhaps even simultaneously.

      [responsive imageid=’30991′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Which is where CHANEL’s new Spring/Summer 2019 makeup collection, Vision D’Asie: L’Art Du Détail steps in. It was created by CHANEL’s global creative makeup and colour director Lucia Pica, who was inspired by photographic exhibition to South Korea and Japan. As such, the range features a strong East Asian influence, with a play on light and textures, and featuring eye-catching metallic hues and dewy finishes, most notably with the Baume Essential, an entirely new product to the CHANEL line-up. The lightweight translucent balm comes in a sleek stick formula and three natural-looking finishes, and is designed to make your complexion look fresh and dewy—dab it on the high points of your face for serious, non-oily sheen.

      [responsive imageid=’30992′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Of course, lips remain a focus, with shades of lush apricot, berry and fuchsia taking centre stage, all in matte finishes, and also the Rouge Allure Liquid Powder, which settles to a silky and not-at-all-drying finish on the lips. The fun doesn’t just stop with your maquillage—there’s an opaque magenta-fuchsia nail lacquer that begs to be worn on both tips and toes, and also a staple nude-beige shade that you’ll paint on repeat.

The Natural Alternative to Retinol You Need To Know About

I’m sure you’ve heard us tout the benefits of retinol before…

But for those playing at home that haven’t, allow us to fill you in.

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A (which is predominantly found in eggs, fish and dairy), and works to stimulate your skin’s natural renewal process, bringing new skin cells to the surface. It does all this whilst minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles to improve skin elasticity. In turn, providing you with younger, healthier skin.

In a nutshell, it’s the OG of anti-ageing ingredients. That’s the good news.

      [responsive imageid=’30860′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Model wears Bec & Bridge Top and Temple Of The Sun Earrings.

The sometimes-tricky news is that is can irritate sensitive skin types, you have to introduce it gradually into your routine for your complexion to adjust, and it’s sun sensitive, so you can only apply it in the evenings. They’re just some of the reasons why skin guru Ole Henriksen went on the hunt for a retinol alternative that didn’t do any of above. “As a skincare expert who has treated skin for decades, I have seen so many of my clients come in with red and irritated skin and/or dry, scaly skin from using products that incorporate retinol,” explains Henriksen. “I often discouraged clients from using it because of the side effects.”

Regularly scouring the world for new ingredients, Henriksen came across bakuchiol in India, a plant-derived ingredient from the Ayurvedic babchi herb that promises similar benefits to retinol, and has since incorporated it into his recently released youth-inducing duo Transform Plus. It also contains AHAs to smooth the texture, and the likes of lemon, sugar and sandalwood to leave your skin silky soft.

So, whether you’re a retinol devotee looking for a natural alternative, or busting to hear more about it, we asked Henriksen to give us the 411.

      [responsive imageid=’30861′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

Model wears Sir The Label Dress.

“Bakuchiol helps strengthen collagen, which results in a visible reduction of lines and wrinkles, improves elasticity, greater firmness, and the skin surface becomes very refined,” says Henriksen. “We have also found that in the process, it helps reduce skin discolorations and the look of open pores. What many people don’t know is that it is also an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits; it reduces redness, and calms the complexion of even the most sensitive skin types.”

YOU CAN USE IT IN THE A.M

“I like the idea of putting the skin’s renewal cycle into high gear both day and night for optimum results. That is why bakuchiol is a key driver in the Ole Henriksen Glow Cycle Retin-ALT Power Serum, which we recommend for day, because it’s not sun sensitive like a retinol—it actually has the opposite impact of reducing redness in the skin. It’s also an ideal formula as an entry point for younger clients looking for preventative skincare because it is a slightly lighter textured formula. However, I always recommend SPF during the day regardless to project your skin from the UV spectrum.”

      [responsive imageid=’30863′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′][/responsive]

“An ingredient doesn’t have to cause skin irritation in order to be effective,” explains Henriksen. “There are many botanicals in nature that are potent and have medicinal qualities—like bakuchiol, which is anti-inflammatory—that also happen to reduce lines and wrinkles, and resurface skin. I love that bakuchiol is empowered in this manner; it’s non-irritating with the same efficacious powers, if not more.”

YOU DON’T NEED TO INTRODUCE IT GRADUALLY

“The beauty of the [Trasform Plus range] is that there is no acclimation, because there is no sensitivity—they instantly work and deliver results. Using both the serum and the Glow Cycle Retin-ALT Sleeping Crème is preferential, but if you prefer to start slow we recommend that younger clients (think early-mid 20’s), start with serum.”
