The Best Runway Beauty Trends From Afterpay Australian Fashion Week 2023
Inspiration station!
If international runways were anything to go by, we were expecting some seriously cool beauty looks to strut in front of us at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week. So, consider this your one-stop beauty trend breakdown for the week.
Whether it’s a bright eye makeup moment, a barely there skin look or a slick, knotted hairstyle, we are here to give you all the behind-the-scenes goss on how to nail the looks in the comfort of your own home. Now, without further adieu, these are the beauty trends our eagle-eyed team have spotted this year at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week.
Slick It Back
Where: Aje, Gary Bigeni, Anna Quan
What: Keep your strands out of your face sans the hair tie and slick the hair up and back instead. Gliding down the runway at Aje, Gary Bigeni (headed up by John Pulitano for O&M) and Anna Quan, the voluminous slick style is both chic and wearable and can be achieved at home by simply combing through some hair gel at the roots. Leaving the ends natural meant the models looked as if they were walking on air down that runway.
Red Red Wine
Where: Alemais
What: It’s a classic for a reason but the red statement lip at Alemais was unexpected for one reason: the clothes are bold. So, next time you’re questioning whether you need to wear a pared back outfit to pull off a red lip, let Alemais inspire you. The bolder the clothing, the better accompanied by a ruby red pout.
Knot For You
Where: Bondi Born, Wynn Hamlyn
What: Nothing says chic quite like a perfectly imperfect knot at the nape of the neck. Case in point: the hair at Bondi Born and Wynn Hamlyn. Both with a slightly different take on ‘The Knot’, the hair was effortless and understated making it a perfect pairing for the stunning looks as they waltzed down the runway.
It's Giving Skin
Where: Common Hours, Bondi Born, Aje, Maggie Marilyn, Anna Quan
What: Skincare is in, in a big way! Pared back, natural skin was one of the biggest beauty trends to come out of the week, spotted at Common Hours, Bondi Born, Aje, Maggie Marilyn and Anna Quan. All about highlighting that glow, the makeup looks were minimal, highlighting the models’s individual features and embracing imperfections and flaws.
Your Hair But Better
Where: Maggie Marilyn, Michael Lo Sordo, Bec And Bridge
What: One of the biggest trends we spotted at AAFW in 2022 was the embracing of each model’s natural hair texture. Well, we’re here to report that this trend has gone nowhere. Spotted at Maggie Marilyn, Michael Lo Sordo and Bec And Bridge, it was all about enhancing natural hair texture to create an effortless, wispy effect. As simple as applying a taming balm or touching up a curl or two with a wand, this trend is perfect for the low maintenance girl (*cough* us), who still wants to look chic AF.

Wing It
Where: Michael Lo Sordo
What: Amping up the va va voom factor at Michael Lo Sordo was the incredible bold winged eyeliner that perfectly complemented the ultra-sexy collection. Daring, geometric and just damn cool, the wing was thicker than your typical cat eyeliner to add an element of grunge to the flowing, lace looks. Wearable? Perhaps not quite. Impressive? Absolutely.
Over And Under
Where: Wynn Hamlyn
What: One of the boldest makeup trends from the week was spotted at Wynn Hamlyn where models sported an under eye liner and eyebrow colour to match. A sort of under-over beauty look, the rich rust shade used created intrigue in each model’s face which further highlighted the futuristic accessories and uber-cool collection.
The Blues
Where: Bec And Bridge, Gary Bigeni
What: Say sayonara to cobalt and hello to baby blues. Spotted at both Bec and Bridge and Gary Bigeni, the baby blue eyeshadow look is all the rage right now. Either apply in a statement block or add to the inner and outer corners of the eyes for something a little different and watch as the compliments come rolling in.
Braided
Where: Joslin
What: News flash: braids aren’t just reserved for the playground, they’re back in a big way. Whether it’s an intricate double-braid situation à la Joslin (created by Pauline McCabe for O&M), or a messy french braid (as worn by our Beauty Editor, Rose), a plait is the perfect way to add subtle interest to your beauty look without too much commitment. Plus, it’s practical and chic!
