5 Summer Hair Trends You Can Take Into Autumn
Looking for a versatile style to take you through the seasons? Listen up.
As we farewell the summer sun and warm evenings, so too do we farewell textured salty styles and sun-kissed highlights. That is, until now. Speaking to hair guru and founder of Sydney hair salon Salon HER, Michael Kelly, we’ve got the summer hair trends that you can take with you as the temperature drops. Here, we breakdown the trends to know, according to an expert.
CUT & STYLE
The Chin-Length Bob
The chin-length bob (aka “the chob”) is a style we saw reemerge in popularity throughout 2023 and we’re not saying goodbye to it anytime soon. “The cut of the year for me will be a chin-length textured bob that skims the jawline and creates a structured shape to frame the face,” says Kelly. Although some of us are afraid of the bob, fearing it won’t suit our face shape, Kelly assures us that it’s a style to suit everyone. He says: “My clients are often nervous that a shorter length bob won’t suit their face shape, but I always assure them that any bob that sits slightly below the jawline will keep your face feeling similar regardless. It will only change your appearance if you go above the jaw. However, essentially all it will do is lengthen your neck and create more shape on your collar bone.” Consider us convinced.
Wash & Wear
Good news for the low-maintenance girlies out there—air drying our hair and learning to love our natural texture is in. A choice that is more common over summer when our hair has that fresh from the beach salty wave, Kelly tells us that embracing our natural texture is here to stay. “Wash and wear hair will be the new normal and embracing our natural textures and shapes will become more fashionable,” he says. Now, I know what some of you are thinking—how do we combat the frizz that sometimes comes with letting our hair dry naturally? Never fear. Kelly tells us: “Options like Keratin smoothing treatments will allow for more manageable hair while you’re getting used to the new texture you’re sporting.”
COLOUR
Micro Face Frame
Face framing is no new concept when it comes to colouring techniques. But, it is one that becomes more frequently seen over the summer months when our hair is naturally kissed by the sun. Well, this year, it’s not stopping when summer ends. “Micro face frames and adding dimension through the front of the hair is where it’s really at,” says Kelly. “I’m encouraging my clients to opt for texture and face framing highlights as they can soften features and create a more open feeling to your face.” On ensuring you get exactly what you ask for from your colourist, Kelly notes: “Ask your colourist to pivot the highlight so that it is minimal and seamless at the roots, gradually building to pop at the cheekbones for a stronger bolder look. This is going to ensure you have a wearable on-trend colour that suits you.”
Minimal Maintenance
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but it doesn’t look like cost of living pressures aren’t going anywhere any time soon. Luckily, neither are budget-friendly, minimal-maintenance looks. “We will be continuing to encourage a lot of minimal maintenance cuts and colour so our clients aren’t slaves to their hair. It’s important we respect cost of living pressures and ensure our clients can continue to have beautiful cuts and colours without feeling the stress and cost of maintenance,” Kelly says. He highlights the importance of finding a hairdresser who understands your concerns: “My sole advice is to find a hairdresser who you know will listen to your desires. If you are not wanting to visit the salon as frequently, then communicating that with your hairdresser is important to ensure you’re on the right track.”
Commitment To Colour
Remember the copper hair trend that had us all in a chokehold in late 2023? Well, it’s somewhat here to stay—that is, as long as you’re prepared for the commitment. Kelly predicts we may see a dip in the popularity of dramatic colour changes like copper, due to the short-lived nature of these changes and seeing clients wanting to return to their natural colour not long after making the change. “I think if you’re prepared to properly invest in embracing a change like copper, then ensure you are ready to commit to at least a twelve month period, or are happy to return to your former natural colour gradually over twelve months,” he says. Did you hear that? Embracing change for the long-haul might just be the ultimate way to take your hair through the seasons.
