8 Hair Trends To Try This Winter
Need a way to uplift your mood as the temperature dropsthis winter? A hair refresh could be just the thing.
As winter rolls around and we’re no longer getting our serotonin boost from summer days spent in the sun, a hair refresh might be just what we need to uplift the mood. Thinking of making a change, trying a new style or looking for some inspiration for your next salon visit? Here, we breakdown the hair style, cut and colour trends that will help us feel fresh (and get us through those winter blues).
CUT & STYLE
The Hailey Bieber Bob
Hailey Bieber—the all too familiar name responsible for many recent beauty trends—from glazed donut nails and skin to brownie glazed lips, Mrs Bieber is a true beauty lover. This time around she wowed us with her hair transformation. The bob is a hairstyle that’s never really gone out of style and, thanks to Hailey Bieber, it’s once again gaining huge traction. We spoke with the founder of Edwards & Co, Jaye Edwards, who tells us: “A bob is timelessly chic and great for achieving a polished look that adds structure and enhances your facial features.” Do you need any more convincing?
Curly Bangs
For our curly hair girlies out there, this one’s for you. With a growing shift toward embracing natural hair, it makes sense that the curly bangs trend will be prevalent come winter. Edwards highlights that “chic, light bangs on curly hair is the perfect way to change up your look with minimal effort.”
“This look would involve simple face framing, cut dry to enhance the natural pattern,” says Edwards. “Depending on your preferences, you could create a curtain bang effect or a more full bang.” There is really no going wrong!
Mermaid Core
If a bob isn’t for you, long luscious locks are also set to be a look that we see everywhere this winter. Dubbed ‘mermaid core’ and seen all over TikTok, super l0ng hair is having a moment. Although it may seem easy to achieve by simply growing out your hair, that’s not always the case. “Achieving length is all about hair health,” says Edwards. “I recommend investing in salon quality restorative products, switching your colour to something more lived in to minimise colour services, as well as regular trims.” And, of course, he also notes that “for those not willing to wait, extensions with invisible layers are also a great alternative.” Now is your chance to live your childhood mermaid dreams (through your hair, that is)!
COLOUR
Golden Hour
Although winter is typically a season that sees many choosing darker shades when it comes to hair, warm honey blonde is trending this year. Similar to ‘bronde’ that we saw gain popularity in 2022, but leaning more toward the lighter end of the spectrum, winter is set to be golden hour for our hair.
How does one achieve this look? “For brunettes, this would involve a lightening service, then toning back to honey perfection,” says Edwards. “Whereas for blondes, a simple 15 minute gloss service could get you there.”
Cherry Cola
Just as Y2K style is seeing a resurgence in the fashion world, it’s now making its way into the beauty realm too. Another viral TikTok trend, Edwards describes Cherry Cola hair as “one for the Y2K fans.” We saw copper hair hold the spotlight for a while there in 2022 and now it’s cherry’s turn. “This deep, cola inspired cherry colour is the next go-to for the cooler months ahead” says Edwards. Although I’ve never been brave enough to switch it up more than simple lightening myself, Edwards assures us the colour can be tailored to suit all skin tones. “This colour is also fully customisable to suit your skin tone, depending on how deep and bright you want your hair to go,” he says.
Recession Brunette
It’s no shock that our daily lifestyle habits tend to change when cost of living pressures heighten (hello, homemade lunches) and naturally, so too do our beauty habits. Given the nickname ‘Recession Brunette’ for obvious reasons, Edwards highlights: “It’s no secret that maintaining blonde hair can be an expensive and time-consuming exercise. With the cost of living constantly on the rise, a lot of clients are opting for low maintenance, future proof colours.” Even though it’s not looking too promising that financial pressures will ease come winter, at least we can look forward to our hair health benefiting from this low maintenance look! Side Parts
If, like me, you spent the better half of high school ‘training’ your hair away from your natural side part and into a middle part, I’m sorry to tell you that all of our hard work is about to be undone. That’s right, side parts are making a comeback! We saw side parts begin to re-emerge as the ‘it’ style last year during the Spring-Summer 2023 ready-to-wear season, where sleek side parts dominated the runways of both Miu Miu and Ferragamo. Seen more recently on red carpets from the likes of Gigi Hadid and Cara Delevingne, it comes as no surprise that side parts are trending again. However, I imagine it’s unlikely the trend will take over the classic middle part and is one that will be more commonly used to elevate beauty looks for events. Whether wearing your hair out or up in a sleek bun, opt for a side part for your next event beauty look!
Turn Up the Volume
Another hair trend that’s seeing us look backwards, this time to the ‘90s, is voluminous locks. We’ve seen voluminous soft waves at the forefront for a while now, with luscious, perfectly waved styles filling our Instagram feeds and encouraging a lot of us to learn how to create curls with a straightener for the first time (myself included). However, this particular voluminous look that we’re seeing everywhere at the moment is achieved not with a curling iron, but good old hot rollers. A look that can be achieved on short or long hair, it’s officially time to dust off those hot rollers and start turning up the volume!
