Lip Service: Everything You Need To Know About Lip Care

Summer is here–but our lips are still recovering from a winter battering. Thankfully, these beauty heroes will bring your cracked, flaky lips back from the brink.

Prep Work

Lips in dire straights? First things first: wipe the slate clean by buffing away any dead skin cells. “I prepped [model] Inez’s lips with a sugar lip polish to exfoliate,” says Katrina Raftery, the makeup artist behind this Gritty Pretty shoot. A gentle scrub, like Fresh Sugar Lip Polish, will do the trick without stripping away moisture from an already dry pout. Or, throw a stick of Dior Lip Sugar Scrub, in your handbag for a touch of lip-renewing exfoliation while you’re out and about.

Choose Your Formula

When it comes to lip balm, do you prefer a stick, tube or pot? There’s no right or wrong answer. All roads lead to a plump pout.

Pot:

Here, Raferty used Sisley Paris Confort Extreme Nutritive Lip Balm, to prep the lips: “It’s a staple in my kit.” She also swears by Kiehl’s Buttermask For Lips, along with her “trusty” Carmex Lip Balm.

Stick:

Is this the easiest delivery method? Nine out of 10 women who took part in our fictional survey say yes. Drunk Elephant Lippie Balm, has a cult-following thanks to its fragrance-free formula packed with avocado oil and shea butter. RMS Daily Lip Balm, offers similar hydration and comes in clear or tinted variations.

Tube:

Let’s go tube-ing. A beauty kit essential of cool girls nationwide, Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm, comes with murumuru seed butter, hyaluronic acid and chic packaging. Not to be outdone, Mario Badescu Lip Balm Tube, is a nutrient-dense and budget-friendly alternative.

Problem Solving

If your current lip balm isn’t doing its job, check the label: does it come with a side of fragrance? “I suggest avoiding scented lip balms,” Raftery shares, “as many of these ingredients tend to make your lips dry.
