A Guide To Lily-Rose Depp’s Signature ‘90s-Inspired Makeup

If Miss Depp is embracing the ombre lip, so are we.

Born straight into Hollywood to parents Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Lily-Rose Depp was bound to end up in the limelight. But, in true Depp fashion, she sure has earned her way to the top and is now one of Generation Z’s biggest stars. Thanks to her starring role in one of the most talked about television series of 2023, The Idol (whether it was talked about for the right reasons is still up for debate), Depp became the it-girl of the year in more ways than one.

From her sultry smokey eye and overlined nude lips to her new-age French-girl style, the CHANEL ambassador is a familiar face appearing on style and beauty moodboards of young people everywhere. Having taken TikTok by storm, with one tutorial on how to achieve her signature ‘90s-inspired makeup gaining over 3.5 millions views, it’s about time we broke down the famed makeup look. Here, we’ve got your guide on how to achieve Depp’s ‘90s look—straight from the makeup artist herself. You can thank us later.

THE LOOK

Speaking to Byrdie, makeup artist, Kate Lee, describes Depp’s go-to look as “defined and classical,” going on to say “her large, doe-like eyes make a khôl liner a natural go-to. Extending the eyeliner is flattering to almost all eye shapes, and the combo of blush and bronzer is just right.” Yep, you read that right—this is a makeup look to suit everyone, no matter your eye shape.

To start the look, Lee tells Byrdie she opts for a dark brown khôl pencil (that is, a pigmented yet easily blendable eyeliner) and applies it along the waterline, extending it outwards to create that iconic elongated Depp wing. Next, Lee sharpens the liner along the base of the eyelashes, using the CHANEL Calligraphie De Chanel gel-cream eyeliner for a more defined look. Finishing the eyes, she creates a soft smudge in the socket with the CHANEL Stylo Ombre Et Contour in shade Electric Brown and adds a touch of highlight along the brow bone to bring a soft glow.

As for achieving Depp’s stunningly defined cheekbones? We’re sorry to say that’s mostly the work of her blessed genetics. However, to add depth to the hairline and further define the cheekbones, Lee shares her go-to bronzer is the CHANEL Healthy Glow Bronzing Cream. To add a wash of colour to the apples of the cheeks, she favours the CHANEL Joues Contraste powder blush in shade 608 Ombr, and for a glowy complexion, the CHANEL Les Beiges Sheer Healthy Glow Highlighting Fluid is used along the cheekbones, jawlines and decolletage.

Now, for the star of the ‘90s show: the ombre lips. Here, we have two lip combinations to choose from—although, both are CHANEL, of course. First, Lee continues to breakdown Depp’s look with Byrdie by sharing that the actor notably prefers to apply her own lipstick and lip liner, however, usually follows the same combination: a nude lipstick, like the CHANEL Rouge Coco in shade 402 Adrienne, paired with a darker lip liner like the CHANEL Le Crayon Lèvres in shade 156 Beige Naturel. Alternatively, celebrity makeup artist Nina Park, who is responsible for some of Depp’s more recent makeup looks, shared to her Instagram a recent lip combo that Depp stepped out in for the Academy Luncheon. Replying to a comment, Park shares she opted for Rouge Coco Flash in shade 54 Boy and Le Crayon Lèvres in shade 162 Nude Brun, to line the lips with a brown hue.

There you have it, ombre away!
