(As if you needed a reason?).

PSA: if you have your eye on the latest MAC lipstick shade, need to top up on Clinique’s Black Honey or want to treat yourself to a new Tom Ford lippy, then this is your sign to add to cart. Throughout the month of September, David Jones is supporting the wonderful organisation known as Look Good Feel Better, which raises awareness and funds targeted at boosting the confidence of women undergoing cancer treatment. All September, $1 from every lipstick and lip gloss sold at David Jones will be donated to Look Good Feel Better as part of Feel Better Month.

But before you close this tab and get shopping (okay, head here if you can’t wait!), let us tell you a little bit more about Look Good Feel Better. This Australian-based charity is all about helping cancer patients across the country build confidence by showing them how to manage the appearance-related side effects caused by cancer treatment. Since you’re reading Gritty Pretty right now, we’re going to assume you’re a beauty devotee and well aware of the power that makeup wields to transform how we feel. It’s no different for cancer patients, who face side effects that change their appearance—from hair loss, to scars from surgery and even skin changes like redness, itching and sensitivity. Look Good Feel Better doesn’t underestimate the psychological impact of these changes and offers free support, workshops and ‘Confidence Kits’ which help to educate and inform.

“The Look Good Feel Better program is about more than just makeup—it’s about offering cancer patients of all ages, genders, and cancer types the opportunity to learn practical strategies to manage the physical, psychological and social impacts of cancer treatment,” explains Carol Kavurma, the General Manager of Look Good Feel Better.

So, why lipstick? Have you ever felt ‘bleh’ and then applied your favourite Tom Ford lipstick (ours is Pink Dusk), only to find your mood has lifted? Well, there’s a reason for that and it’s literally called ‘The Lipstick Effect’. Researchers at Harvard Medical School proved there is a psychological phenomenon that boosts the confidence of a woman when she wears makeup—including applying her favourite lipstick. It’s science!

So, purchase a lipstick in September and wear yours with confidence and you can help a woman undergoing cancer treatment do the same.
