The Responsible Thing To Do With Your Unwanted Gifts This Holiday Period

Turn your trash into treasure.

Gifting season is well and truly here and we get it—no matter how many times you tell someone to not get you something, there’s a very high chance you’ll end up with something you didn’t want or need this holiday season. So, if you are one of the 51 per cent of Australians who receives an unwanted gift this holiday period, then here’s the environmentally responsible thing to do with it.

1. Refuse

It’s never an easy conversation, confessing to someone that the gift they thought you’d love is something you’d rather live without. But by having this chat you’re able to save yourself (and the planet) a lot of heartache. Have this conversation early and, if possible, see if there is the option to return or exchange the item. Over the Christmas period, many retailers extend their 30-day returns policy for exactly this reason.

On the flip-side, if you are the one gifting this year then always remember to keep the receipt. I like to snap a quick pic on my phone as I make the purchase so that there’s less of a chance of me losing it.

2. Regift

A quick handball is always a good idea. Someone’s trash is another’s treasure, right? Regift something to someone knowing that they will actually enjoy and use it, but do it quickly so it hasn’t dated or gone out of style.

3. Resell

eBay and Gumtree are fantastic platforms to resell unwanted pressies and buyers are ripe and ready come December 26. Take pictures that accurately depict the item and its condition. I often use the brand’s online product description to help me out. Don’t be greedy and be prepared to barter, at the end of the day a sale is better than nothing.

4. Re-home

If you have no luck with any of the options above then find a way to rehome your gift. Look for a local charity in your area or list something on Facebook marketplace for $0. Giving it away to someone who will love and enjoy it is better than throwing it away.

If you haven’t heard of them before Givit is also an amazing Aussie platform that connects you with those in need. From disaster response to local charities, it is a great tool to find a forever home for your unwanted items. Givit isn’t just for unwanted presents they will also have call outs for old towels, clothing and more. So, next time you’re decluttering make sure you look there first.

Most importantly, if you are the giver this year then why not give with purpose? Give a donation to charity on someone’s behalf or an experience rather than a physical item. If you’re stuck and really need to gift someone a present, don’t be afraid to ask someone what they really want and need. I’m sure if the role was reversed you’d prefer that they just asked you!
