Conscious Collection: March 2023
Packed to the rafters with goodness!
This column just doesn’t come around fast enough. Each month I have so much to say I am bursting at the seams! Now, while there is so much happening in this space, don’t be fooled into consuming the next big sustainability thing just for the sake of it. What we’re looking for is conscious consumption! I’d define conscious consumption as the act of consuming what you need, not what you want. And when making a needed purchase make the planetary impact a consideration in your decision making.
I’d also like to point out that while we’re seeing more and more brands labelled ‘sustainable’ entering the market, what is important to acknowledge is the journey that many brands are on to doing more for the planet. Becoming a sustainable brand isn’t something that happens overnight–and if it does, I’d be questioning the number of corners cut in the process.

It may have been a hot minute since the SuperBowl but it has only been 1093 seconds since I watched another replay of Rihanna’s half time show. In what I am calling a stroke of marketing genius, not only did she announce her pregnancy but throughout her performance her brand Fenty Beauty supposedly sold a whopping $9 million worth of products within 12 hours of the performance. In true Rihanna form, she was glowing with flawless skin and a bold lip. According to Rihanna’s makeup artist, she wore the following: Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Loungwear Foundation, Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation using Invisimatte Instant Setting + Blotting Powder halfway through the performance (#productplacement) and the bold lip was thanks to the brand new Icon Velvet Liquid Lipstick in the aptly named shade ‘The MVP’.

NOTEWORTHY
Sheena Yaitanes made her first beauty product at the age of 10—a glitter gel highlighter—and now her brand Kosas has won over the likes of Olivia Wilde and Gwyneth Paltrow. Impressive, right? Kosas’s philosophy is simple: hero nature and use fewer ingredients. It has a list of over 2,700 ingredients it won’t use including sulphates, parabens and talc. If you’re new to the brand, the two products to try include the Revealer Concealer and the infamous Wet Lip Oil Gloss.

TREND ALERT: Winged Eyeliner
Awards season is here and I don’t know about you but I have been taking notes. Amongst the loud colours and new and old trends, my favourite—the wing—is back! My tip? Look for a liquid liner to get a cleaner flick and sharper finish. Don’t be afraid to pick a bright colour too. Although, in saying that, my go-to is always chocolate brown.

SUSTAINABLE SWAP
One small sustainable change in your beauty routine that is often overlooked is toilet paper. According to WWF, 270,000 trees are cut down every day to make toilet paper. Millions around the world press flush and trees disappear. What’s better? Lucky for you there are a couple of different alternatives out there on the market. The best sustainable swap is loo roll made out of recycled paper or, if that doesn’t scratch that itch, the next best option is paper made from bamboo which grows faster and requires less resources to grow than the trees used most commonly.
