Conscious Collection: January 2023

Your go-to guide for all things green beauty.

It’s back! I know you’ve all been patiently waiting but your favourite column is here. For those who haven’t tuned in before, each month I round up all of the fun and exciting things that are happening in the sustainable beauty space. Sustainability is confusing, throw in some greenwashing and sprinkle of marketing prowess and it is near impossible to crack the code on what a sustainable beauty product is. That’s why I’m here to break it down and make it oh-so easy!

NEW

Glow Recipe has just released a refill pod for it’s famed Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream. About as addictive as your favourite coffee pod, Plum Plump offers next level hydration and long lasting results. If you’re new to the brand, Glow Recipe is known for its unique ‘fruit forward’ focus, using your fave fruits for beauty benefits. As the name suggests, the Hyaluronic Cream uses a plum base whereas other products use avocado, guava, blueberries, watermelon and so much more. It’s the first refill offering for the brand and hopefully—with their communities support—it won’t be the last.

NOTEWORTHY

Did you know that half of the women’s clothing and footwear that is sold online is returned? Let’s be honest, we’ve all done it (well, two out of three of us have). The term is called bracketing, where you purchase two or three sizes or colours of the same piece of clothing with the intention of returning what doesn’t fit.

There’s two major environmental downfalls here. Firstly, sending back these items equates to 10 billion transportation trips each year in the US alone. Secondly, it is estimated that brands are often so overwhelmed by the number of returns that only half are returned to the shelf for resale and 25 per cent are thrown out. Five billion tonnes of returns end up in landfill each year, generating a whopping 27 million tonnes of carbon emissions.

TREND ALERT: HEATLESS CURLS

A tight deadline to make it out the door already invokes a sweat before you add in blow drying or straightening your hair with a hot tool. It’s no wonder why we’re seeing the rise of heatless curls. From TikToker’s braiding their hair with dressing gown ties to plush headbands, there is a new tool for it all.

My approach is very much back to basics, nothing fancy but a nourishing treatment to nurture your sun and heat damaged hair from root to tip and plenty of time to let your hair drip dry.

SUSTAINABLE SWAP

I am all for New Years Resolutions. It’s what pushed me to start living sustainably and launch my own business, Banish. Now, I don’t think it is realistic to ask people to turn their lives upside down but what I will suggest is making one or two resolutions for this month that align to the planet. These could be to have one meat-free day a week, catching public transport or walking to work or thrifting your next outfit over buying new. Each change is worth it no matter how big or small. P.S. Here are seven other beauty related resolution ideas for 2023 if you’re looking for extra inspo.
