It’s Personal: Why Eye Cream Should Never Be A One-Size-Fits-All Beauty Product

Is there anything more unique than our eyes? So why isn’t our eye care specialised?

The trend toward personalised skincare is here to stay—we have customised serums, facial oils and even moisturisers. So why do we tend to approach eye care with a one-size-fits-all mentality? Given how unique our gaze is—it’s literally the window to the soul, guys—why don’t we think of eye care as requiring a personal approach?

French luxury skincare brand L’Occitane is changing that. The Provence-born beauty brand knows our eyes tell a story and that’s why they’ve developed a specialised eye care range with products as unique as the wearer. The L’Occitane Immortelle Eye range is formulated with the brand’s iconic Immortelle flower—a miracle ingredient that promotes cell regeneration—but is targeted toward your own individual eye care concerns.

Intrigued? The Gritty Pretty team was on board to test out. We asked Eleanor, our founder and editor-in-chief, who is 32 years old, to accompany Rose, our beauty writer, 21, and Sue, our brand partnerships manager, 50, to L’Occitane’s Centrepoint store in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, where the expert staff helped them find a personalised solution.

“My main concern would be puffiness and dehydration,” says Rose, who with her fast-paced job as Gritty Pretty’s beauty writer, is always looking for ways to fake a full night’s rest. “I find that my sleep is the first thing to suffer when I am busy and my eyes are the first place to show it. ” Rose was assigned the Immortelle Reset Eye Serum to use in tandem with the Immortelle Precious Eye Balm. The lightweight balm can be tapped across the orbital bone for an instant hit of hydration thanks to its Hyaluronic Acid bond, while the Immortelle Reset Eye Serum can be used as an overnight treatment designed to work extra hard to brighten up tired eyes.

For Gritty Pretty’s founder and editor-in-chief, Eleanor, targeting the eye area is all about combating dark circles and puffiness (“from chasing after one very rambunctious toddler!”). The busy mother-of-one tested out Immortelle Reset Eye Serum, which is perfect for women of all ages, since it promises to reduce dark circles and other general signs of fatigue for a more luminous gaze. In addition, the Immortelle Divine Eye Balm will complement Eleanor’s existing skincare routine when applied as her last eye step, morning and evening.

At 50, Sue, Gritty Pretty’s brand partnerships manager, is after an eye care regimen that can target fine lines and, she says “I tend to get a bit of puffiness.” The team at L’Occitane suggested Sue use the brand’s two Divine eye care offerings in tandem. The Immortelle Divine Eye & Lip Contour has a lightweight formula; perfect for daytime use, that works well under makeup and like its name suggests, can be applied to both the eye and lip area, too. The richer Divine Eye Balm can be applied at night as a mask to go deeper to smooth out wrinkles and de-puff. The products are both perfect for someone in their 50s, thanks to their potent fast-acting formulas, made with the brand’s Immortelle Flower, which works to plump and leave the skin feeling supple.
