THE BEST BEAUTY TRENDS OF NYFW AW16
…And that’s a wrap on New York Fashion Week.
Over the last eight days, a lot of really, really ridiculously good looking people congregated in The Big Apple to watch (and walk for) some of the world’s best designers showcasing their collections for the upcoming autumn/winter.
Photos of clumpy lashes, #KenGi and “no makeup” makeup have pervaded our feeds and our browser history suggests we’ve been down many a NYFW Googling spiral since it started.
With London Fashion Week around the corner, and Milan and Paris shows to follow, let’s get you up to speed. Courtesy of all the inspo we’ve gathered from NYFW, here’s an illustrated summary of the beauty trends we’ll be wearing once the weather cools…

VIBRANT RED LIPS
The red lip is a beauty mainstay, so what’s new here? This winter’s red is more vibrant and its texture is creamy, sheeny and velvety with warm yellow tones. Mansur Gavriel, Cushine et Ochs and Proenza Schouler have the right idea.

GLITTER ATTACK
Less dance troupe and more intergalactic glamour, glitter was featured heavily on eyelids, nails and cheeks this week. Opening Ceremony’s Bladerunner-inspired runway used a generous dusting of silver glitter on eyes and around the jaw line (could this be the new strobing?), and Tommy Hilfiger played up shimmery gold specs on the eyelids muted with some brown shadow smokiness.

MINIMAL MAKEUP & UNDONE WAVES
Proving that “no makeup” makeup can get even more stripped back, several shows including Alexander Wang, Dion Lee, Michael Kors and Suno, featured fresh-faced models with nude to nothing lips, bare eyes, natural skin with restrained dewiness, untouched brows and undone waves. Oh, and the occasional lip ring courtesy of Australian jewellery label, Sarah & Sebastian. Looks like minimal’s sticking around.

SPIDER LASHES
Spider lashes are to NYFW Fall 2016 what Beyoncé was to the Super Bowl Half Time Show – scene stealing. Maybelline New York did a ripper job creating dramatic, clumpy lashes at Jason Wu, Baja East, Ground Zero, Wes Gordon and Marissa Webb. We liked a lot of what we saw.
[responsive imageid=’16807′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]
LAYERED NAILS
Nail art was relatively less involved with manicures this season featuring polish on polish on polish. We’re calling it the ‘layered manicure’ – almost completely painting over one shade with another, leaving only the rims visible. Great excuse not to buy nail polish remover if we ever saw one.
[responsive imageid=’16806′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]
THE PLAIT IS BACK
From textured and teased plaits at Rebecca Minkoff to endless loop plaits at A Détacher, multi-plaits at Creatures of the Wind to single and school girl plaits at Mansur Gabvriel – there were a variety of tangled up ‘dos on the runway. Eventually even front row guests like Harper Beckham and Olivia Palermo attended with plaits in their hair.
[responsive imageid=’16805′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]
QUICK SILVER
Hints of high-beam silver kept popping up throughout the week, and at first, we were like, Is this like “fetch”? Is it going to happen?, then we saw metallics on all the eye lids at Giulietta and Marissa Webb, and the whole silver glitter thing really made an impact at Opening Ceremony (see above) so like, yeah, we guess it happened.
[responsive imageid=’16803′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]
BLACK-RIMMED EYE
Why go half circle when you can go full circle? Edgy, matte black kohl-lined eyes worked its way into a few shows including Coach, Herve Leger and Monique Lhuillier. Skin was pared-down and left quite minimal for stark contrast.
[responsive imageid=’16804′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]
SLEEK STRAIGHT HAIR
When strands weren’t plaited or looking undone, they were flat-ironed and sleek straight with softer ends for balance. Stylistically, they were tucked into shirt collars at 3.1 Phillip Lim and Vera Wang and left hanging like a veil in front of the face at Monse.
