GET THE LOOK: ’90S-INSPIRED BEAUTY

The ’90s. What a time to be alive.

Brows were marker-thin, scrunchies were in, and highlights were so bright they were literally glow in the dark sometimes.

And yet for all its apparent mishaps, the ’90s are still one of our favourite decades for makeup. It was experimental, edgy, cool – and revisiting the era makes us appreciate the power of beauty so its little wonder there’s always some kind of revival brewing. Who doesn’t love a bit of beauty with attitude?

Here’s our modern take on ’90s beauty ft. model muse Erin Shea decked out in CK and denim (it wouldn’t be a ’90s revival otherwise):

MAKEUP:
BOY BROWS & ROSE GOLD LIPS

1. Prep skin with NARS Pro-Prime Oil Free primer (also try: Benefit Cosmetics The Porefessional Primer)
2. Skip foundation. This look is about keeping it boyish and a little raw. Instead, apply concealer only where needed to even up the complexion (try: Ellis Faas Concealer).
3. To eliminate shine, dust a bit of loose powder (such as BareMinerals Mineral Veil) on target areas.
4. To add dimension, apply NARS Multiple Sticks in Copacabana and South Beach on cheeks.
5. For eyes, apply NARS Velvet Shadow Stick in Goddess followed by NARS Dual Intensity Eyeshadow in rose-gold shade ‘Rigel’ (available in September 2016).
6. Next, shape and sculpt brows using a clear brow gel and then add brow powder with an angled brush. By applying powder after gel, the pigments stick immediately and accentuate the shape. (“I do it in the reverse order to a lot of people,” confesses makeup artist, Uzo.)
7. Ditch mascara but curl lashes.
8. To finish, apply the same illuminating NARS The Multiple Stick in Copacabana that was originally used on cheeks on top of the lips. Follow with a touch of NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Het Loo.

BEAUTY NOTE:

For brows to hold their shape, brush them downwards with gel and then take another coat and brush upwards. People often just brush brows up and it just flops back down because there isn’t enough product on the hair shaft.

HAIR:
THE 2-PART TOP KNOT

1. To start, prep hair with heat styling spray (try: Bumble & bumble Hairdresser’s UV Protective Dry Oil Finishing Spray) before using Cloud Nine The Original Iron to smooth out ends and strays around the hairline.
2. Start by parting hair just behind the ear and working your way up the crown and then back down just behind the other ear and secure with an elastic. Then, bring the remaining bottom section right up and secure with a second elastic and pull the front section into it.
3. Next, add volume by teasing the bottom section before combining the two to add more height and texture. Then twist, tie and pin both sections into a messy top-knot.
4. Seal with a spritz of medium hold hairspray (try: Lea Journo Voila Finishing Spray).
5. To finish, pull out a few wispy bits around the hairline to make the style feel more lived-in.
