SHOULD YOU BE USING A LIQUID MATTE LIPSTICK?

Only a few years ago, we shunned lip glosses. Condemned them for being too sticky and glittery.

Now they’re cool again, albeit less sticky and glittery, and it’d be remiss of us not to credit Kylie Jenner for this makeup redux. Who else’s lips have started a craze like #KylieJennerLipChallenge?!

Liquid mattes are the lip glosses 2.0, thanks to KJ’s powerful pout and her certified empire of Lip Kits. They deliver bold colour and uniform coverage that goes on wet and sets perfectly matte, making them easier to apply and more forgiving than traditional matte lipsticks to wear.

There’s no need to ‘build up colour’ because they’re so highly pigmented, one coat is more than enough. Liquid mattes also have mighty staying power so you don’t get that unfortunate rim of colour around your mouth after you eat and there’s little chance for lipstick-on-teeth style gaffes.

Consider liquid mattes your training wheels to perfect lip colour.

GET THE LOOK:

  1. MOISTURISE LIPS

Just because they go on as a liquid doesn’t mean you can get away without using a balm or lip conditioner. You must ALWAYS condition lips before adding pigment, and do it 10 minutes before so it has time properly sink into you lips.

For very dry lips, we recommend Lanolips Golden Dry Skin Salve, otherwise you can’t go wrong with Go-To Skincare Lips!

  2. PRIME LIPS WITH LINER OR CONCEALER (optional)

If you’re going for a more polished look, you’ll want to use a lip liner because liquids obviously don’t outline well – even with the best doe-foot applicator.

Filling in the rest of your lips with liner or dabbing concealer over the entire surface is optional, but we’d recommend it as a layer of insurance if you want your colour to last. By filling it in with colour or concealer, you give your liquid matte formula something to grab onto. Concealer also neutralises skin tones so the colour ‘pops’ even more. We’re fans of the neutral Chantecaille Lip Contour Fill.

  3. APPLY LIQUID MATTE LIPSTICK

Then, it’s just a matter of painting your lips with the liquid matte colour and cleaning the edges up with a Q-tip or concealer.
