Conscious Collection: October 2023

Trick or treat?

The scariest thing about Halloween isn’t the dress-ups, the masses of plastic-wrapped confectionery, wasted pumpkins and single-use decorations (although none are particularly good) but the tricks that so many brands are playing on us. Greenwashing—when brands make misleading claims about their sustainability initiatives—is something that I am all too familiar with but still get caught up in. Take your time, do your research and ask lots of questions. If you do get caught in a greenwashing boobie trap (don’t worry, it happens to the best of us) just get back on the horse and make a better purchase next time.

Skincare powerhouse Emma Lewisham has just released its Supernatural Blemish Serum which uses the world’s first probiotic strain, Micrococcus luteus Q24, to help target acne-prone skin. Using 20 years of research and being completely refillable and recyclable through the Emma Lewisham Beauty Circle program, this serum ticks all of the boxes! Tests and trials by the brand itself show some seriously promising results with 79 per cent of participants noticing a reduction in acne in just 28 days.

TREND ALERT: BANNING MINERAL OIL

With consumers and brands looking closely at the fine print, one ingredient that is often getting the flick is mineral oil. For example, Sephora’s Clean range is mineral oil-free. Mineral oils are, generally speaking, an oil that is derived from petroleum. It is technically refined and purified to the point in which it is clear and forms the base of many products like baby oils and balms. Known most commonly as petroleum jelly, it forms a barrier on the skin, locking-in moisturiser but sometimes clogging pores.

SUSTAINABLE SWAP

This year is quickly passing us by and with summer and the party season fast approaching, it’s a good time to do a spring clean. For me I like to do an audit of what I have buried in the depths of my wardrobe and my beauty cupboard to avoid doubling up on things I already have. Get to the bottom of that sunscreen canister and fall in love again with your summer dresses. If you do find some beauty empties, make sure you recycle them responsibly with a program like BRAD. And if your clothing is still in good condition, give it to a friend or donate it to a charity shop, otherwise it needs to go to a textile recycler like Upparrel
