Conscious Collection: November 2022
Your go-to guide for all things green beauty.
Sustainability has been thrown into the spotlight this month. In what felt like one step forward, two steps back, we celebrated National Recycling Week (November 7-11) and, in the same week, heard that one of Australia’s most beloved and used recycling programs, REDcycle Soft Plastic Recycling, has paused all collections.
For many it feels like a really big knock to our confidence. Almost as if we trusted and believed in a system that is broken. If you, too, are feeling like this then I would encourage you to remember that recycling isn’t the solution, reduction is. We need to use less plastic and rely less on recycling to solve our problems.
But, good always comes with the bad. So, let’s get onto the more beautiful stuff. Here’s what’s been happening in sustainable beauty this month…
NEW
Hot off the press, a sustainable skincare brand built specifically for sensitive skin (hallelujah!) has just launched. After struggling to find quality skincare for sensitive skin for years, Natalie Butler decided to create the range she was looking for herself. Introducing: biobod. With three core principles on a “balanced microbiome, strong skin barrier and calmed inflammation,” we see this brand becoming a cult-favourite in no time.
Biobod Replenishing Hydra-Soothe Serum
Conscious Code: Vegan, Cruelty-Free
NOTEWORTHY
If you haven’t already make sure you read our first-ever Gritty Pretty Magazine Sustainability Issue, guest edited by your favourite Sustainability Editor (me!) for an extra dose of planetary goodness. Our cover star, actor-turned-activist Nathalie Kelley, shares her beauty secrets and also how she’s working towards regenerating our future. Plus, there are amazing features to delve into such as the environmental impact of glitter and the ugly truth behind animal testing in cosmetics. Not to mention our downloadable guide on recycling. Read it now.
Conscious Code: Packaging (Recyclable)
Another superb resource that you’ll find in the Sustainability Issue is your very own downloadable (and printable) recycling guide! I get it. Recycling is hard, difficult and confusing! This guide helps break down what can and can’t go in your kerbside bin and what needs to go to specialty recycling programs.
Bangn Body Firming Lotion
Conscious Code: Recyclable, Vegan, Cruelty-Free, Locally-made
Aesop Mandarin Facial Hydrating Cream
Conscious Code: Recyclable, Vegan
Trend Alert: Hair Protection
As the sun shines and we explore the outdoors in this warmer weather, it’s easy to forget to protect our scalp and head. Throwing on a hat is your best option but, if you’ve left your bucket hat at home, you can also give your locks some love with a heat protectant like Klorane’s Repairing Cica-Serum. The sun might offer natural highlights for some but it also damages and weakens your strands so it’s important to protect them from UV rays.

Conscious Code: Vegan, Packaging (Recyclable, Made From Recycled Materials), Community
Sustainable Swap
When it comes to sustainability, it is easy to look to next-gen innovation and cool new inventions but I’m also a big believer in going back in time. The same goes for your body wash. Ditch the plastic bottles and make the switch to a good old-fashioned bar of soap. You’ll still come out of the shower smelling like roses but will be a lot kinder on the planet.
