Conscious Collection: May 2023
Sustainable news that’ll leave you in a good mood!
May this month be the month that you make many sustainable swaps and switches. I’ve said it once and I am sure you’ll hear me say it again: there is so much happening in the sustainable beauty space right now. We’re seeing packaging advancements, sustainability initiatives and new brands popping up like daisies! Here’s everything you need to know to stay in the loop.
NEW
The world’s purest eucalyptus and tea tree oil just launched from new Aussie beauty brand, ETTO. Using the power of the Australian natives, tea tree and blue mallee eucalyptus which are antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anti-fungal, it is a definite add to your bathroom staples. Not only that, but the brand focuses on complete transparency and a circular farming approach using renewable energy sources and creating as little waste as possible.
Etto Premedicated The Pure Oil Spray

NOTEWORTHY
Sunday Riley has made another addition to its suite of sustainability initiatives. Adding to B Corp, Green Lab, PETA-approved and its iconic Zero Waste Oil Process is their partnership with CleanHub and Green Worms. Through the partnership, they hope to achieve an ambitious goal of collecting and removing 52,022 kilos of plastic from the beaches and oceans in Kerala, India by September 2023. To date, they’ve collected 15,462kg of plastic, the equivalent of 1,704,466 plastic bottles. This initiative will also see the creation of over 200 safe jobs for waste workers who are predominantly women.

TREND ALERT: HEMP
Speaking of natural botanicals, hemp is also an amazing skincare ingredient that celebs around the world swear by (namely Kristen Bell and Gwyneth Paltrow). Most beauty products will use a hemp seed oil which is a powerful hydrator containing omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, is anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial—pow pow! Science backs up these claims with mounting evidence that hemp is a game changer for hydration.

SUSTAINABLE SWAP
This month we celebrated International Composting Awareness Week on May 7-13. If you don’t know your way around a compost bin, now is your time to shine. It’s estimated that 40 per cent of household landfill bins are made up of organic matter which could be composted. Not only that but we’re starting to see more and more brands switch to providing compostable packaging. Before you toss something labelled compostable in your compost bin or garden, check for the home compostable symbol. If it has the industrial compostable symbol then you’ll need to put it in a FOGO bin or landfill.
