ALEXANDER WANG X H&M

If you’re Alexander Wang and you’re launching a capsule collection with retail giant H&M, you launch it with a bang, that’s what.

As the first American designer to be invited by H&M – joining the likes of Versace, Marni and Maison Martin Margiela – Wang decided his would be a collection of fashionable athletic wear.

So, it was only apt that the sports luxe show was held last Thursday night at Fort Washington Avenue Armory in Washington Heights, which is now a track-and-field facility.

With 38 exclusively designed garments, it seems fitness wear isn’t limited to the gym; it’s for every day.

Highlights from the collection include quick-dry black running tops and perforated laser cut shorts, each bonded and branded with ‘Wang’ in silver mesh. There are even boxing gloves, a yoga mat and water bottle.

Post-show, one thing was clear: Wang proves that even with his finger in H&M’s, Balenciaga’s and his own eponymous pie, he continues to be a leader in design.

And because Wang is renowned for throwing a killer after party, after a few songs from rapper Sharaya J, unannounced headliner Missy Elliott took the stage, commanding those in the crowd to put down their phones and “Get Ur Freak On”.

Mark November 6 in your diary, kids.

The Alexander Wang x H&M collection goes on sale then.
