“You Are The Same Person I Met When We Were 12”: Guy & Jules Sebastian On Love Languages, Parenting And What Unity Means To Them

Guy and Jules Sebastian met at church in their early teens. Now considered one of Australia’s most loved couples, this high profile duo are busy – thanks to two children, their charity, The Sebastian Foundation, Guy putting the finishing touches on his upcoming album T.R.U.T.H and Jules running her own successful business. Gritty Pretty sits down with the Sebastians to find out what makes their relationship work.

No two people are the same. We all enter this world with our own unique set of quirks, nuances and can’t-be-replicated behaviours. Similarly, no two love stories are the same, either – whether it’s romantic love or the bond between a mother and child, each journey is unique to those two individuals. That’s what makes it so special. In partnership with Georg Jensen, we’re speaking to well-known duos to find out more about their unique love. Previously, we’ve spoken to Gritty Pretty Founder & Editor-in-Chief Eleanor Pendleton and husband Mathew Wilson, Interior Stylist Steve Cordony and partner Michael Booth and The Beauty Chef Founder Carla Oates and her daughter, Jeet Pavlovic. Today, Guy and Jules Sebastian take Gritty Pretty inside their family home in Sydney.

“You literally are the same person I met when we were 12 or 13; you’ve grown and morphed and matured but at the core of you and at the heart of you, you’re the same person,” Jules tells Guy, reflecting on their first encounter at church in suburban Adelaide. While a romantic connection didn’t form until a few years later, it was the start of a beautiful friendship between the two. “[It was] the best, best upbringing and the best life,” Guy says. “We had the closest mates.”

Guy and Jules married in 2008. The couple share two sons: eight-year-old Hudson and six-year-old Archer. The addition of their children has changed the way the pair view each other. “Watching Jules as a mum, it just completely gives me, as a husband and as a father, just a different respect for you,” Guys tells Jules. “All you care about is others.”

According to Jules, the respect and admiration as a parent is mutual: “You are good at being a dad. You really are. You are so fun. You’re the fun one, out of us two. You’re a good time. But you’re also really good at listening to them and communicating with them. I love that our boys have that to look up to.”

It takes a solid foundation to raise children and form a family unit. “[Learning] each other’s love languages” is important, says Guy – and yes, he counts music as one of his. “A song, to me, it means a lot. Obviously, it’s a natural way for me to show my love.”

“When you write a song and it’s all of the things you wanted to say in this one song,” Jules tells Guy. “Then, it’s just, I’m over.”

Throughout their relationship, Guy and Jules have used jewellery to mark momentous occasions with their engagement, naturally, being the most memorable moment to date. Guy designed the ring himself: “I thought I was really clever. It was this really different looking ring.” Jules loves her unique ring and the care that went into the design: “When it’s a special piece of jewellery, you hold it so close to your heart and you keep it forever. It’s one of those things that bond you.”

“It’s always represented unity; I think that’s what jewellery has meant to us,” Guy reflects.
