The Gritty Pretty Magazine Sustainability Issue!

Everything you need to know about sustainability in beauty in one (very chic) place…

Surprise! The backend of 2022 just got a whole lot better with a bonus issue of Gritty Pretty Magazine. The Sustainability Issue is your dedicated beauty bible to all things environmentally-conscious brands, products and initiatives. Guest-edited by our very own sustainability editor, Lottie Dalziel, this issue is overflowing with sustainable beauty hacks, important ingredient investigations and interviews with some of the most inspiring brand founders in the industry right now.

“I never anticipated that in just a couple of years, sustainability would surge to the forefront of conversations so much so that I’d be invited to work on an entire magazine dedicated to it,” says Dalziel. “I didn’t envisage (although I did hope) that brands would evolve to give back to our planet and that so many readers would be hungry to learn how they can build a better future.”

Want to know more before diving into the issue? We sat down with Dalziel to quiz her on the ins and outs of the issue…

Q:

What Is The Gritty Pretty Sustainability Issue?

A special bonus issue of Gritty Pretty Magazine that tackles the big questions around sustainability in beauty. Whether it’s understanding which ingredients are endangered (and should be protected) or discovering why glitter might be more foe than friend, this issue has it all. Of course, we also roundup our favourite sustainable and environmentally-conscious beauty products so you, too, can fill your bathroom cabinet with formulas that are good for you and the planet.

Q:

Who Is Our Sustainability Issue Cover Star?

So glad you asked! Fronting the Gritty Pretty Sustainability Issue is none other than actor-turned-activist Nathalie Kelley. Famous for her roles in Fast And Furious, Dynasty and Beauty And The Baker, Kelley immigrated to Australia from Peru when she was just two-years-old. Now using her influence for good and to open up the conversation around conservation and living sustainably, we grilled Kelley on all things conscious living.

Q:

What Are The Gritty Pretty Conscious Codes?

Sustainability can be overwhelming. So, we wanted to make it easy for you to spot when a product is formulated with the environment in mind. The Gritty Pretty Conscious Codes do just this. The six codes–vegan, cruelty-free, packaging, organic, locally-made and community–indicate how the product works to protect and conserve the environment

Q:

Who Are The Changemakers To Watch In The Sustainability Space?

All hail the driving forces behind positive change in the beauty industry! One of our key pieces in the Sustainability Issue was around the forward-thinking brand founders who are making a real difference. We speak to Bhavna Suri of Terra Tonics, Vanessa Gray Lyndon of Biode, Rochelle Courtenay of Share The Dignity, Emma Lewisham of Emma Lewisham and Adeline Yeak of Zove Beauty, to better understand why the onus falls on start-ups to set a sustainable example.

Q:

How Can You Do Your Bit?

Learning about sustainability in the beauty industry is all well and good but if you don’t know how to implement change into your own lives, I haven’t done my job. The Sustainability Issue also contains a downloadable (and free!) beauty product recycling guide. Print it out and pop it on your fridge or keep it in your camera roll and refer back whenever you hit an empty.
