5 Minutes With Lauren Hutton

One of the most iconic supermodels divulges the beauty tips she swears by.

There are few supermodels who are as much a trailblazer as Lauren Hutton. Born and raised in the southern United States, the 79-year-old has been modelling for almost 60 years and has single handedly championed the progression to embracing ageing within the fashion and beauty industry.

Known for the iconic gap between her teeth (which, at the start of her career, was the reason she was dismissed by agents), Hutton was also the first model to sign what has now become known as ‘The Beauty Contract’. Signing with Revlon in 1973, it was, at the time, the biggest contract in the history of the modelling industry.

We sat down with Hutton while she was in town for the David Jones Beauty Awards this week to chat about her favourite career moments, what she is most proud of and, of course, the beauty products that she won’t live without.

Lauren! Hi! You began your modelling career in the mid-60s and are now one of the most iconic supermodels of all time. What would you say was a career-defining moment you’re most proud of?

A defining moment was actually later in my career when I was in my forties and returned to modelling. I had to push my way back into the industry and I’m proud of encouraging editors to give women over 30 representation. To be invited back to Australia as a special guest for David Jones’s Beauty Awards, over 20 years since I was their last face, is an honour and proves that age shouldn’t hold you back.

The fashion and beauty industry has changed dramatically over the last couple of decades. What is the most positive change you’ve seen and are proud to have witnessed?

We are now seeing women over 40 as models and on covers. What I’m most proud of is the changing conversation around ageing and the way women feel about getting older.

You were one of the first models to embrace your gap between your teeth. Why do you believe it’s so important for us to embrace the things that make us unique? And hold on to the attributes that make us different?

I was told to fix the gap in my teeth and I said, “Yes ma’am”. I was then told to fix my nose too. I didn’t do any of that. I became known for my gap and soon realised that our imperfections are what make us unique and beautiful.

What is your personal beauty philosophy?

Beauty doesn’t have to be complicated. Beauty is understanding yourself and, to me, about being brave. Forget what people have said to you, you need to look inside yourself.

In terms of your own beauty routine, what are the top five products you have on hand at all times?

Clinique Almost Lipstick, Kora Organics Noni Glow Face Oil, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation and La Mer Creme De La Mer. These are the products I always find myself going back to. Lastly, Chanel No. 5 Perfume. My mother, Aunt Gaga and grandmother all wore this so it holds a special place in my heart.
