Talk about fancy…

Full disclosure: This article is sponsored by Oral-B but that doesn’t mean their sponsorship is ever going to stop me from being straight up honest with you.

If you have ALREADY listened to the latest Beauty Talk episode of Gritty Pretty’s beauty podcast, then you’ll know for the past two weeks I have been trialling Oral-B iO Series 9 Electric Toothbrush.

Oral-B’s latest innovation comes in at, wait for it, $749 (RRP)..!

No, I’m not kidding. I know it’s enough to make your eyes water—it did mine—but at a premium price like that, the beauty editor in me was instantly intrigued and admittedly excited to trial this product (I know, lucky me! I do love my job!).

Here’s the lowdown…

The Sell: Oral-B is calling the iO their “best electric toothbrush yet”. In one week, Oral-B also claims your gums will be 100% healthier compared with using a manual toothbrush.

The Price: $749 (RRP) but definitely keep an eye out for a sale. At the time of publishing, ShaverShop is spruiking a special EOFY deal at $399 (yes, please!).

Now $749 is A LOT. But, we all brush our teeth twice a day (hopefully!) so this luxury brush is worth the investment considering how often you’ll use it. Let’s remember that there are people from all walks of life with varying degrees of disposable income and for some of you, this may be a grooming product you are considering investing in.

The Review: Firstly, here’s what you get: the handle, 2 x brush heads, a travel refill holder, a charging travel case and a quick-charge magnetic charger station.

Sounds like a run-of-the-mill electric toothbrush bundle but I can assure you, it’s not. This is the Rolls Royce of teeth cleaners. Yes, friend, you read that right.

What makes this slick, onyx black electric toothbrush different to other brands is that it uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) recognition with 3D tracking to monitor your brushing across the front, top and back surfaces of your teeth. Using Bluetooth, the AI-powered tracking connects to the Oral-B app on your smartphone to map the surface of each tooth as you brush to ensure a complete clean. It’s like a real-time coach who will help improve your brushing habits (great for anyone who needs a little help in that department).
Now, I’m someone who gets sweaty palms just thinking about the dentist. While my dentist is lovely (hello, Dr Sophia!), I don’t look forward to seeing her. I have extremely sensitive teeth (biting ice blocks? No way!) but this toothbrush offers not one but seven modes to personalise your brushing service: Daily Clean, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Gum Care, Intense Clean, Whitening and, wait for it… Tongue Cleaner.

With ordinary manual or electric toothbrushes, it can be hard to  know when you should replace them but Oral-B’s iO9 has an interactive colour display that let’s you know when it’s time to think about switching your brush head for a new one. The display also greets you as you power up and gives you a smile for a job well done, for a little added positive encouragement.

On top of that, it also has a Smart Pressure Sensor (another fancy feature) which turns red when brushing too hard and green when brushing just right to help keep gums protected. Finally, you’re meant to brush your teeth for 2 full minutes (do you? I wasn’t sure I did with my old bamboo toothbrush) but this bad boy has a 2-minute timer to let you know when you’ve completed a full clean.

I’ve been using it for approximately two weeks now and I can say I have honestly noticed my gums do seem healthier.

The Score: 8/10

The first thing I noticed was when I’d run my tongue across my teeth after brushing, my teeth felt as clean as they do after a session in the dentist’s chair. They also felt and looked noticeably cleaner than after I’d brush with my bamboo toothbrush.

I’m quietly hoping that if I continue to use it, I don’t have to see my dentist as much. Sorry (but not sorry), Dr Sophia.
