The Best Runway Beauty Trends From Afterpay Australian Fashion Week

      by Rose Garnett

Ever heard of ‘wafting’? Neither had we.

As another Fashion Week draws to a close and the hustle and bustle starts to die down (we’re very gladly waving goodbye to 5am starts and changing in the back of our cars), it’s time to reflect on the week that has been. With over 45 runway shows now complete, it’s safe to say that the beauty inspiration is coming in thick and fast. Our prediction? You won’t need to look any further than this story for inspiration for the next 12 months.

Whether it was a summer escape at Oroton, a meditative reflection on the Bassike runway or an escape to wonderland with Romance Was Born, lusting over the clothes at Fashion Week only came second to lusting over the beauty looks. Here, we walk you through the trends we think will stick.

      The Wafted Wave

Where: We Are Kindred and Auteur

What: Think of your ultimate fairy-esque hair and now smile knowing we can tell you how to get it. The man behind the hair at We Are Kindred, Travis Balcke, created the ethereal waves by ‘wafting’ Schwarzkopf Professional products through to provide hold and shine while still maintaining that undone look. Simply grab the hair at the ends and, while maintaining tension, shake the waves away from the face. Body and volume await you.

      The Pulled-Back Pony

      Where: Ginger & Smart

What: Your favourite second day hair style just got an update. Perfectly complementing the watercolour floral prints and oversized silhouettes that walked the Ginger & Smart runway, the polished pulled-back pony is both elegant and wearable. Keep your natural texture in the body of the pony and add your favourite hairspray on top to keep any stray hairs in place.

      The Slicked Braid

      Where: Bassike

What: While there were sleek buns aplenty in the front row this week, Bassike’s hair direction took it one step further by opting for a slicked braid. Using a hefty amount of pomade and hairspray to get the hairs into place, the braids sat at the nape of the neck, perfectly accompanying the brand’s many backless pieces.

      The Au Natural

Where: St Agni, Rumer, Manning Cartell, Aje, First Nations, Zimmermann

What: Dominating the runway this resort 2022 season, embracing each model’s natural texture was one of our favourite hair trends. Throwing uniformity out the window, the trend is super low-maintenance, requiring only a hydrating serum or two to bring moisture into the hair and give it that healthy shine. Whether you have curly, wavy or dead straight hair, everyone can nail this trend.

      The Fresh Face

Where: KitX, Oroton, Jordan Dalah, Commas

What: Good news! The no-makeup-makeup look that we all know and love is actually trending. Adding just a little concealer to hide blemishes, a natural coral blush and clear brow gel to keep those hairs in place, the fresh-faced look is perfect for the everyday. Simply add eyeliner, a bold lip or a glitter lid to take it from day to night.

Alice McCall, Romance Was Born, Bondi Born, Beare Park

      Christopher Esber

We Are Kindred, Ginger & Smart, Bassike

      Rumer, Manning Cartell, Aje

      Oroton, KitX, Jordan Dalah, Commas

      The Pastel Eye

Where: Alice McCall and Romance Was Born

What: Feeling like a ’70s revival, this Fashion Week saw a new take on the bold eye trend. Opting for satin finishes and pastel hues, the frosted eye makeup at Alice McCall was the meeting point of wearable and disco. Romance Was Born opted for a more artistic take, taking the pastel across the cheeks as well. For the everyday, we think this trend is perfect for adding a pop of colour to an all black outfit or amping up your eye colour.

      The Blurred Bold Lip

      Where: Bondi Born

What: Sitting pretty alongside the backdrop of the Sydney Opera House, the makeup look created on Bondi Born models by Anne Salem of Clarins was almost summery enough to make us forget it was 14 degrees. With clean, dewy skin, the hero of the look was the perfectly blurred bold lip, created in hues of pink, orange and red for the resort show. Our biggest tip for the perfectly blurred edge? Dab the product in with your fingers to diffuse any harsh lines.

      The Copper Smoke

      Where: Beare Park

What: Forget blending out a cool toned black to add a sultry smoke to your eye makeup, Beare Park proved that sexy can be colourful. For their debut show, the brand wowed at the Sydney Opera House with their classic yet elevated collection and their play on orange eye makeup. Blended up, in and around the eye, the single colour look felt effortless yet considered and we can’t wait to wear our version to dinner this Saturday.

      The Poker Straight

      Where: Christopher Esber

What: A runway trend that doubles as a wearable hairstyle, the poker straight hair at Christopher Esber was the epitome of #goals. Created by Rory Rice using Tresemmé Pro Pure products, the look perfectly complemented Esber’s bold silhouettes and intricate detailing.
