      BEAUTY TALK: GAL GADOT

To the untrained eye, Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot may seem like a beautiful actress but, in real life, she’s just as bad ass as her Wonder Woman character.

In 2004, Gadot was crowned Miss Israel. Unbeknownst to many, in the same year, she was conscripted in the Israeli Defense Forces. “Serving in the Israeli army means giving up your freedom for two years,” she says wearing a sleeveless black leather dress, which hugs in all the right places, perched on a blue velvet chesterfield lounge talking exclusively to Gritty Pretty at Berlin’s Soho House.

“In an ideal world, I wish Israelis didn’t have to serve in the IDF and that people could live peacefully in a harmonic way [in Israel, serving in the army is mandatory]. But, if I can take anything from my experience of being in the army, it would be that it taught me the values of discipline and to give respect to the responsibilities that I have.”

Add to the fact that Gadot is a self-proclaimed tomboy who, as the daughter of a gymnastic teacher mother, grew up regularly doing sports – “I never think of sport as a chore – it’s a joy” – and who drove a Ducati until she became a mother to daughter Alma, 5. Sure, she counts pilates as her go-to workout (she continued doing classes 2-3 times a week while pregnant) but she also admits to also having her simple beauty routine down pat; relying on drinking water daily, slathering Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on just about everything, a bespoke moisturiser crafted by a one-named wonder in her home country known simply as Giselle and finally, a couple of coats of her favourite Careline Bold Mascara.

Gadot, who needs no introduction, is of course Amazonian superhero, Wonder Woman, in the latest DC Comics installment which has already smashed box office records and continues to exceed all expectations (we’ve seen it – and loved it).

Calling the Wonder Woman role and also working with Kate Winslet in Triple 9 her “biggest career highlights”, another equal of her success is her partnership with Gucci Bamboo, the fragrance for women. “I feel very privileged to be a part of such a major fashion house like Gucci. It’s a huge thing for me and I’m really proud of it,” says the 30-year-old brunette beauty. Adding, “My family and I have always big fans of the brand,” admitting her first fashion memory is of her mother’s Gucci handbags and shoes. “I distinctly remember the Gucci logo on some of her pieces.”

The fragrance, which is a complex blend of orange blossom, Casablanca lily and ylang ylang, is designed to be worn by the modern woman. In other words, all of us. “It’s very fresh and very floral but also has a touch of sweetness to it,” says Gadot. “It’s young, sexy and yet it is still sophisticated and elegant.”

Nowadays, Gadot admits, “As women, we are expected to be perfect workers, mothers, wives and daughters – it’s a lot to accomplish all of these things. We are expected to be smart and sophisticated and able to juggle what we have to.” She’s also aware there’s an archaic mentality that if you’re good at your job, you aren’t a good mother and if you’re a good mother, then you aren’t good at your job. “This simply isn’t the case,” she says boldly. “We can absolutely be powerful and feminine at the same time. We, as females, can be strong and delicate.”

In the Gucci Bamboo video campaign directed by Fabien Baron and lensed by Mert & Marcus, Gadot’s on-camera skills were tested with two days spent shooting the stills campaign and another four filming the commercial.

Her military service came in handy when asked to wield a fencing sword. And, her 12 years as a dancer pays off as she moves effortlessly across a ballroom floor and she even plays the piano naked (as one does when your core is toned from finding your balance on a stand-up paddle board in the middle of the ocean).

When it comes to acting, “I’m very open-minded but I really enjoy portraying strong, independent woman,” said Gadot. “When you go to the movies, [it’s always] the upset, heartbroken girl who’s waiting to be saved by a guy. In real life, that’s not the way it is!” Damn straight.

It appears the actress has it all. Humbly admitting, “I’m very grateful.” But, in truth, it’s her husband [Israeli businessman, Yaron Varsano] and her daughter who are her life’s greatest achievements. “Alma made everything every in my life so much clearer.” [Editor’s note: since this interview, Gadot has given birth to a second daughter, Maya]. Asked if she could give her daughter just one piece of advice to take her through life, Gadot replied, “I would tell my daughter to find her self confidence from within and to do what’s best for her and not what is expected of her.” Now, that’s bad ass.

I Double Cleansed For A Month & This Is What Happened

Listen up! If you think ‘double cleansing’ is just a new-age trend or mumbo jumbo, think again.

Au contraire, double cleansing has been practiced for centuries in Japan. Yes, hundreds of years, people.

Double cleansing is a very real — and very effective — way to wash your face. And, the method is exactly as it sounds: cleansing the face once to remove makeup and a second time to truly purify the skin. It’s not hard and it’s not complicated – it’s just the addition of one step that may take 60 seconds or less.

In Japan, double-cleansing was born of necessity, as cleansing oils were the only means of removing the white paint-like base that women traditionally wore as a sign of beauty; they followed with a cream or foaming cleanser to refresh the skin and remove oil residue.

To the lo-fi lady, the idea of cleansing twice might strike you as particularly implausible. That is, until the night you finally muster up some motivation and give it a go, waking up with skin that’s softer, brighter, and just plain cleaner than you’ve ever seen it before.

And, just to be clear, it’s not just a matter of a second go ’round with your normal cleanser. To really reap the benefits of double-cleansing, it’s important to use an oil-based formula before your regular face wash. An oil-based cleanser will dissolve sebum and remove surface impurities.

After noticing a change in my skin’s texture (most likely due to the change in seasons), I embarked on a mission: to double cleanse every day for a month and document the effects. Here’s a recap on the month that was…

      DAY 1

I didn’t get a good night’s sleep. I know I’ve really got to stop looking at Instagram at 10PM but I can’t help but see what Rebecca Jobson’s ridiculously cute kid got up to that day or what artwork Vicki Lee has just completed… This morning, I wake up feeling tired and (shock! horror!) my skin looks it too. Sure, it’s clear of acne (I know I’m very blessed to rarely suffer from bad blemishes except for the hormone-induced volcano that likes to visit my right jawline every couple of months) but this morning my complexion is looking, well, dull. A bit lack lustre.

It’s the first day of my double cleanse challenge. This month, I’m committing myself to my favourite skincare brand SK-II and its Facial Treatment Cleansing Oil and Facial Treatment Gentle Cleansing Cream. After washing my skin with cleansing oil and lukewarm water first, my skin seems deeply hydrated but not oily. I pat my skin dry. Next, I massage a cleansing cream that lathers beautifully. “This is quite luxurious, isn’t it?” I think to myself. For me, my morning and night skincare regimen is my ‘me time’. It’s those few moments at the beginning and end of the day where I can just spoil myself. After taking a good 60 seconds to cleanse for the second time, I don’t just feel more awake – hot damn, I look it too. My skin appears somewhat brighter and I’m ready to apply my morning serum, eye cream, moisturiser and SPF sunscreen and face my frenetically busy day head on.

      DAY 5

Man, this week was A BIG ONE. At work, it seems I’m never not on deadline and my hours have stretched from 8:30AM – 8:30PM (#businessownerlife). Being that it’s a Friday, my fiancé and I celebrate with Friday night drinks. I pop on a little extra eyeliner, mascara and my favourite powder (CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder). Once we arrive home – albeit a couple of frozen margaritas later – and are ready to crash, I take to the bathroom sink. “It’s double cleansing time!”  I’ve been at it every day this week and decided to double cleanse only at nights from now on. Why? My skin doesn’t produce that much oil while I sleep and after wearing makeup, being in air conditioning and exposing my skin to the elements of UV and pollution during the day, it makes sense to double cleanse of an evening. True devotees practice double-cleansing in the morning and at night but beginners should go easy on their skin for the first few weeks. Try it just at night first so you don’t risk too much dryness. “Hey, my forehead looks a bit more… even,” I think to myself before passing out from exhaustion.

      DAY 16

Sydney weather doesn’t know what’s going on. One day it’s 9 degrees and freezing; the next it’s sunny and a balmy 23°. As we move into winter Down Under (or summer if you’re above the equator), it’s the perfect opportunity to target your biggest skin concerns head on. By incorporating a (second) cleanser like SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleansing Cream, you can address a specific skin concern like dryness, dullness, or acne. The purpose of this second wash is to truly cleanse the skin after your oil-based product has rinsed away dirt and grime.

      DAY 30

“I think my usual 3pm oil slick has lessened,” I think to myself when it’s time for my usual afternoon coffee and touch up. After double cleansing every evening for a month (FYI – our skin operates on a 28-day cell cycle), I have noticed my skin appears brighter. The texture and tone looks smoother and my complexion feels naturally hydrated. I look healthy and more awake. Heck, people might even think I sleep an actual 8 hours!

So, it’s decided: even if you stick to nighttime double cleansing only, you’ll see a huge difference in the tone, clarity, and overall oomph of your complexion within a matter of days.

      Do you double cleanse?

Are you ready to take on the 30-day double cleanse challenge? Ready, sink, wash!

This Aussie Designer Made Models Do Something With Their Makeup You Normally Shouldn’t

In case you’ve been living under a rock or having a digital detox from Instagram, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia was in full effect this week.

We’ve seen the usual beauty looks you would expect for upcoming spring/summer: bold lips, washes of colour on eyes, playful up-dos and nonchalant, undone waves.

However, on the final day of MBFWA one particular designer – Ten Pieces – caught our attention by getting down and dirty (literally).

“We wanted the models to have a really f**ked up eye, and a slept in look,” says Carol Mackie, M.A.C Cosmetics Senior Artist. Backstage at Bondi Icebergs Dining Room, it was the show’s makeup director’s application process that really piqued our interest. “We actually did their makeup last night before this morning’s show so they could sleep in it,” she revealed backstage.

“We used M.A.C Eyeshadow in Soot (which is aptly named) to give a really dark smokiness and we’ve been using our fingers instead of brushes to smudge it so that it almost looks like they’ve done it themselves,” says Mackie. Adding, “You know how when you do a black liner, and for some reason it always looks better the next day? That’s what we’re going for so we did just that – literally. This morning before the models hit the runway, we’re just simply touching them up with a bit of hydration using M.A.C Prep + Prime Softening Lotion and then we’re just spot concealing where necessary.”

This punk rock look served to compliment the collection made up of urban separates such as baggy shorts, drop crotch track pants and sleeveless hoodies while white freeway lines dominated the determinedly cool offering.

And, while we don’t condone sleeping with your makeup on, we do agree the lived in look is lo-fi.

Come on, tell us – do you wash your makeup off every night?

Are you guilty of leaving your makeup on?

      CONCEALER: BEFORE OR AFTER FOUNDATION?

It’s the age-old beauty question: do you apply concealer or foundation first?

Nicole Thompson, MAC Cosmetic’s Senior Artist, says absolutely foundation first.

“If you spend time concealing blemishes or uneven skin tone, you don’t want to wipe all of that away with your foundation.”

Thompson, who has worked on the faces of Jessica Gomes and Jennifer Hawkins as well as models at Proenza Schouler, Prabal Gurung, Chloé and many more shows, says she prefers to apply a sheer layer of foundation onto primed skin first to even out any discolouration.

“Work the foundation into the skin in circular motions using a soft fluffy brush starting from the centre of the face (where we tend to need more coverage) moving outwards.”

Once your foundation has settled, apply concealer using a small brush (try MAC Brush in #219) in a patting motion on top of the areas that need it – this technique is called “stippling”.

Now that we’ve established that concealer comes after foundation, how do you go about choosing the right concealer shade? Thompson says the shade varies on what you’re trying to cover.

“If you are concealing a blemish, match your concealer to your skin tone or current foundation.” You may also go a shade lighter or opt for a duo concealer palette like MAC’s new Studio Finish Concealer Duo, which gives you both options.

Thompson says, “If you are covering under eye circles or pigmentation that tends to have a slightly blue undertone, opt for a concealer with a slightly peachy, warmer tone.”

“Apply less to begin with then build until you’ve reached the level of coverage you require. “[And], don’t forget to set the spot with powder. This will really help keep it in place.”

We Tested La Mer’s $750 Foundation Range and Here’s What We Thought

When it comes to foundation, we’re a fussy bunch.

It can’t be so sheer it does nothing; and it can’t be so pigmented you can scrape it off with a spoon and layer it on top of a red velvet cupcake. It needs to have just the riiiiight amount of light-reflecting pigments you suddenly look like you’ve returned from a glorious week in the Maldives but not so much you look like you’ve just sweated up a storm at your local F45.

It needs be packaged beautifully you are proud to show off on your vanity and also be able to deliver powerful ingredients to treat your skin and fight the premature signs of ageing.

Yes, when it comes to foundation, there’s no doubt us Gritty Pretty editors take things very seriously.

La Mer makeup—properly named Skincolor de la Mer—is the first full range of color cosmetics from the luxury skin-care label, which launched late last year. The collection, much like La Mer as a brand, is seriously refined, with just three products including the Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF 20 ($200), a concealer ($150), and a loose powder ($175). A foundation and loose powder brush are also available, retailing for $120 and $115 respectively, with each one tailored to the precise application of a liquid formula or the light-as-air touch required for a powder.

What makes the range special is its Miracle Broth – the hero ingredient that features in La Mer’s iconic Crème de la Mer, which you can read up on here – gives the foundation range skin care super powers rather than just being purely cosmetic.

Take the Soft Fluid Long Wear Foundation SPF 20, for example. One pump and the texture will surprise you: it’s almost as fluid as water. However, when applied with the foundation brush, it blends buildable soft colour flawlessly and it stays true (even against humidity – thanks Sydney!). Our beauty team agrees the subtle fragrance of the foundation conjures up memories of butterscotch caramel.  The finish is flawless and slightly dewy but due to its liquid formula being packed full of nutrient-rich ingredients, pores look refined, skin is protected against free radicals, moisture levels are replenished and you begin to look, well, fresher.

For full disclosure, no, this post is not sponsored but when the $750 foundation range hit our desks, we couldn’t help but be intrigued. Does it add up to the hype? Is it worth the price tag?

Yes, it absolutely is pricey—but we’re not sure we can put a price on our skin.

Have you tried La Mer’s new foundation range?

Are you a fan of La Mer’s Crème de la Mer?

Jessica Gomes Launches Her Own Skin Care Products

On set with model and David Jones ambassador, Jessica Gomes, at Sydney’s La Porte Deux and the first thing that becomes apparent is her passion – completely unwavering and authentic.

This week, Jessica has launched her own skin care product line, Equal Beauty, and it quickly becomes clear that Jessica hasn’t just lent her name to any ol’ cosmetic and skin care company to create a range off the back of her celebrity. Far from it, actually. The reality is Jessica Gomes is completely invested in this passion project – both personally and financially. Having funded the launch of the business herself (Jessica reveals she has only just signed on a minority stake investor to assist in “taking Equal Beauty to the next level”), she has also spent the last three years (!) navigating the entrepreneurial space of the beauty world. “The hardest part of creating Equal Beauty was getting a grasp of the manufacturing chain,” admits Jessica.

Involved in every single aspect of the brand’s creation – from concocting formulas and selecting ingredients to branding and boxes – Jessica proves she rebuts against stereotypes that once worked against her.

“When I first started my modelling career, I was not embraced by Australia. I had to go to Asia where my career really flourished particularly in South Korea. I’m Australian and I so badly wanted to work in Australia but I was always considered the Asian model, the curvy model, the swimsuit model,” says Jessica. Having well and truly achieved both local and international success in both modelling and acting (Jessica appeared in Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014 and also stars in the upcoming Hollywood film Bastards alongside Owen Wilson and Ed Helms, which she says was “a once in a lifetime experience”), it’s clear there is much more to this (exceptionally) beautiful human than just good looks.

Gritty Pretty sat down with Jessica over a cup of green tea to talk more about her beauty brand Equal Beauty and what else in store for the 32-year-old (whom doesn’t look a day over 21) model, actress and now, beauty entrepreneur…

      GrittyPretty_Tips

“I was in Palm Beach three years ago. It was Christmas time and I was with my family – it was the first time in a long time that I had taken some time off. I was feeling really invigorated and clear-headed. I was spending a lot of time by the ocean, I wasn’t wearing any makeup and I took some reflect. I just felt compelled to start my own business. I wanted to create a brand and work on a project that was my own. A brand that would allow me to control and direct the creative. I felt ready to take on the responsibility of starting my own company.

As a model, I already had a lot of experience with skin care. Skin specialist, Melanie Grant, is a good friend of mine and she has taught me a lot. She has inspired me along the way. Fumi Yamamoto has also looked after my skin as a model – she has taught me so much. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of being able to play with all different types of skin care products and I realised what worked for me and what didn’t. I thought, “Why can’t I create a simple skin care line that I trust and know works not just for me but also for other women as well?” That’s really how the idea of Equal Beauty came to birth.

After I came up with the idea of Equal Beauty, I decided to act on it. I wrote up a business plan – it made me cry! I didn’t go to University; I left school in grade 12 and I’ve been modelling and travelling since then. I hadn’t written an essay in over 10 years and suddenly I was writing a business plan for my business – it was very confronting and the risk suddenly became real. I had to go back to basics and strip myself back. I told myself, “Okay, I need to write everything down. I need to put all of my thoughts and ideas into a plan. I needed to have a strategy. Launching any business involves risk – calculated risks – and it was scary. I had to figure out how to create this brand I had dreamed of without wasting any money and making too many mistakes, to be honest. That was probably the hardest part.”

The next step was speaking to people in the industry. I had to find people to surround myself with; business people who I could learn from. I flew to Perth to meet Andrea Bux (Founder of Invisible Zinc & Co-Founder of The Super Elixir by WelleCo) – she gave me a lot of advice. I was also lucky enough to go to Byron Bay where I was doing a meditation retreat with friends and it was there that I met Gary Harwood. Prior to meeting Gary, I had faced a lot of road blocks and met people who weren’t right to collaborate with on my brand. He was the one who really helped me navigate my way to finding the right people; the right chemist, the right manufacturer, the best packaging designer and so on to help me create Equal Beauty.”

      [responsive imageid=’22468′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_Tips3[/responsive]

“I’ve learned so much about myself since launching my own business! It’s important to work with people on your page and that get you. Sometimes situations just don’t gel and sometimes they do. I learned that pretty early on. The truth is having spent the last three years creating Equal Beauty, it was not easy. Even though I knew EXACTLY what my vision was, I still had to keep going back to my ‘why’ and not lose focus of why I wanted to create this simple skin care brand – and that was simply because I wanted to create a fragrance-free line for women on the go; an easy but efficacious range focused on hydration and protection, which featured Australian ingredients but powered by Korean and Japanese-inspired technology. I had to stay committed so that my brand has integrity. I’m really proud to have done that.”

      [responsive imageid=’22407′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_JessGomes_05[/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’22408′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_JessGomes_07[/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’22464′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_Tips1[/responsive]

“I have such a huge connection with Asia. When I started my career, I was embraced by South Korea before Australia. I was working in Seoul 7 or 8 years ago. I even had a television show there [My Name is Jessica Gomes]. My career did really well there and I think that is because my heritage. Growing up, I always felt connected to anyone who seemed similar to me. Yes, I’m Australian and I identify as Australian [Gomes was born in Sydney, raised in Perth and has a Chinese mother Portugese father] and I so badly wanted to model in Australia but at the same, Eurasians models simply were not being embraced. They didn’t get work. So, I went to South Korea and I just fell in love with it. I believe Korea is one of the leading case makers in the beauty world so I looked to there for certain types of technology that could enhance the efficacy of my products. I’ve always used cloth masks especially when travelling or before special events like runway shows or movie premieres. [Cloth masks] originated out of Asia, so I wanted to create my own. I created two – one for the full face and one just for the eyes, which launches later next month.”

      [responsive imageid=’22466′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_Tips2[/responsive]

“A woman had posted a photo of me on Instagram from a David Jones runway show. She had written something along the lines of, “It’s amazing to see David Jones using models of different ethnicity for their show. The face of the girl next door has really changed in Australia and I love that. #EqualBeauty.” When I saw that, I just thought, “I love that! Equal Beauty!” I was trying to think of other names but I kept coming back to the word ‘equal’. It can translate in so many ways as it can be about balance and equilibrium. In Japanese culture, it can relate to symmetry. And, it also can pertain to equality among people. I wanted the name of my brand to clearly state that this range is simple, it works and it should embrace your individual beauty – there is no one else like you – so that’s how the name Equal Beauty came to be.”

      [responsive imageid=’22416′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_JessGomes_05[/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’22458′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Super-Mist[/responsive]

Used Super Mist constantly on set of our shoot, Jessica says, “It’s the perfect face mist because it’s packed with hyaluronic acid, which is super hydrating.” Hyaluronic, FYI, can be a man-made soluble but it’s also something our human bodies produce naturally. As we age, our bodies aren’t able to produce as much so spritz away. We also like this mist because it helps to protect your skin against pollution making it perfect for your bag and travel.

      [responsive imageid=’22457′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Super-Serum[/responsive]

Full of antioxidants (which is code for good sh*t for your skin); the Super Serum fights against baddies known as free radicals. It’s also full of Vitamin C, which Jessica says she is “obsessed with” so it brightens and makes skin plump and radiant.”

      [responsive imageid=’22462′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Cleansing-Cloth[/responsive]

The Cleansing Cloth was “one of the hardest to get right,” admits Jessica. The ultra-mesh cloth pads (which come in a pack of 30) contain phospholipids (two types of fatty acids good for naturally attracting water and holding onto it to give your skin a precious drink of moisture) so that your face isn’t striped dry when cleansing. Non-irritating for skin and eyes, use to melt away makeup, oil or dirt on the fly.
      Like Jessica said, e.a.s.y.

      [responsive imageid=’22459′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Moisture-Veil-Face-Mask[/responsive]

At Gritty Pretty, we love a face mask and Equal Beauty’s Moisture Veil Face Mask is both genius and effective. The range’s star ingredient – hyaluronic acid – appears but it’s the little clever attachments that hook onto your ears so your mask doesn’t fall off your face that we really dig. Twenty minutes under this sheet and skin is hydrated and plump and when it’s plump, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced.

      [responsive imageid=’22461′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Moisture-Veil-Eye-Mask[/responsive]

Launching in April, Moisture Veil Eye Mask is a “drink for the eyes”. A combination of quinoa extract (pronounced keen-wah) and peptides revives tired eyes and reduces puffiness. While this is one to watch out for, there is nothing stopping you from adding the rest to cart.

      [responsive imageid=’22410′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_JessGomes_11[/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’22475′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_Tips5[/responsive]

“Perhaps I’ll create new products to add to Equal Beauty but first, I want to listen to what other people want. I want to give them these four, five products first then see… If they want brightening products, perhaps I’ll create a mask specifically for brightening. Perhaps consumers may want a lip balm or a sunscreen or a heavier cream… I want to spend the next few months listening to their feedback before Equal Beauty grows and evolves. Margaret Zhang shot Equal Beauty’s campaign and we’ll be storytelling to our consumers about other women – like Natasha Bordizzo and Alexandra Spencer – who inspired us. After launching here in Australia, I’m looking to launch Equal Beauty in Asia.

Professionally, I’ve got Bastards coming out later this year. We shot the film in Atlanta, Miami and LA and I play Owen Wilson’s girlfriend. I had the opportunity to obviously work closely with Owen but I also met Glen Close, who is amazing. I love acting; I’m so passionate about film. If the right role came along, I would love to do more film. If the stars align and it’s the right script and a great character that I can embody, I would love to. I’m 32-years-old now and I think I’m finally in a really great, really happy place in both my professional and personal life.”

GET THE COVER LOOK: LILY COLLINS

      Yep, there’s something about Lily.

Sure, it could be those bushy brows or perhaps it’s that the dark-haired rock star royalty (daughter of music legend, Phil Collins) has substance.

With a massive 6.1 million (just think about that number for a second…), the actress and now author of Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me is all too aware of the social responsibility that comes with being a role model for young women.

She also takes her role in the spotlight seriously. “It’s always been really important to me that [my social media followers] know I experience the same things that they do and face the same insecurities. [Instagram] is such a powerful tool to get to use in order to have conversations and reassure them that they’re never alone in their struggles.”

While it seems growing up in the spotlight would mean Lily is far beyond her years, she also knows how to have fun like a 27-year-old should. “I love a classic cat eye and a bold lip. But I really love seeing what new looks my makeup artists come up with every time I go to an event,” says the British-American who is also an ambassador for beauty giant, Lancôme.

Back to beauty, Gritty Pretty enlisted Lara Srokowski, Lancôme National Makeup Director, to recreate Lily’s look:

      [responsive imageid=’22114′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]GrittyPretty_SummerHairSavers_Line2

      [responsive imageid=’22371′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]09_626_Lancome_110_AL_054_w3QC(1)[/responsive]

      [responsive imageid=’22387′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-1[/responsive]

Start by preparing the skin with Lancôme Advanced Génifique to add hydration and provide a heathy glow to the skin. Beautiful makeup always starts with beautiful skin.

      [responsive imageid=’22384′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-2[/responsive]

Next prime the skin using La Base Hydra Glow – this primer will perfect the skins texture and create a radiant base ready for foundation

      [responsive imageid=’22385′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-3[/responsive]

For foundation create a flawless finish with Teint Idole Ultra, using the foundation brush buff the foundation from the center of the face outwards. In areas you wish to achieve more coverage you can pat the foundation into the skin using the brush.

      [responsive imageid=’22388′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-4[/responsive]

Add a touch of Cushion Blush in a coral shade to the apples of the cheeks. Use your finger tips to apply the colour which will give a natural fresh look to the skin.

      [responsive imageid=’22382′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-5[/responsive]

For the eyes layer neutral shades of brown to the mobile eye lid. With a fluffy blending brush add a touch of bronzer to the socket of the eye to help transition the shades and diffuse the shadow out to keep the eyes natural and well blended. Apply a brown pencil eye liner to the bottom lash line, and using a small brush soften the line for a more natural look.

      [responsive imageid=’22386′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-6[/responsive]

Amplify the top lashes with two  coats of Grandiôse Mascara. Use a zig zag motion from the root of the lash out wards for extra  length, volume and curl.

      [responsive imageid=’22383′ size1=’0′ size2=’641′ size3=’1024′]Step-7[/responsive]

Finish with a pop of red on lips like L’Absolu Rouge in 198 Rouge Flamboyant.

      A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

“What does beauty mean to you?”

That is one of the most common questions I’m asked.

The truth is there is no single – or correct – definition of beauty. Beauty is subjective and can be found in many different things.

Personally, when it comes to beauty, I believe there is perfection in imperfections. I believe in not wanting to look like anybody else. I believe in going fiercely out into the world as your true authentic self to help others. I believe in having a voice and making it f*&%ing count.

When I left my Beauty Editor career at InStyle magazine to launch Gritty Pretty – a website dedicated to the democratisation of beauty – I had no idea of what Gritty Pretty would go on to become or the incredible audience of women who would inspire me daily.

I also never would have imagined I would go on to front MYER’s beauty campaign, #HereIAm (which was revealed today and you will see more of over the next three weeks). What I do know is that I’m immensely proud to be the face of this beauty campaign, which I think is much more than skin deep.

Whoever you are, wherever you may be, you deserve to feel confident. You are unique. I am unique. We all are. Our differences are what makes us beautiful that’s why I embrace mine and use these beauty products to enhance them. It’s my way of saying to the world, “Here I am, this is me.”

      Won’t you join me?

I’ll be hosting beauty workshops at Myer Melbourne (Saturday 4 March 1pm – 2pm) and Myer Sydney (Saturday 18 March 1pm – 2pm).

Grab your girlfriends and book your tickets here. See you there!

ELEANOR PENDLETON LAUNCHES NEW SHOE COLLECTION

“Congratulations on the launch of your shoe collection,” a POPSUGAR journalist said to me during a press interview this week.

Well, that’s a sentence I never thought I’d hear. Yet here I am, having proudly just launched ‘The Renegades‘ – my limited edition five piece capsule collection with Australian e-tailer, Shoes of Prey.

The collaboration came to be some months ago. It began with an email from the the company, which has a start up success story of epic proportions, inviting me to collaborate. Shrieks of excitement between my agent and I confirmed I wasn’t being punked by Ashton Kutcher. Shoes of Prey wanted me to join them on their newest campaign joining the likes of Shoes of Prey co-founder Jodie Fox, Australian illustrator Megan Hess and fashion influencer Kim Jones (who turns out to my spirit sister in more ways than one).

Standing at the media launch event in Sydney this week, it dawned on me how my relationship with Shoes of Prey had ironically come full circle. I had the pleasure of meeting Shoes of Prey’s Jodie Fox in 2009. I was a young 20-year-old beauty editor at FAMOUS magazine and Jodie was an ex-lawyer who threw it all in to launch a shoe brand. She had just launched her company [alongside co-founders with Michael Fox and Michael Knapp] when we met and we gelled instantly.

I remember meeting Jodie and being blown away by the sheer brilliance of the brand. Long before monogramming and customisation was a thing, Shoes of Prey was making waves by allowing customers to create their own designs using an online 3D design tool. Narrow foot (like me)? Wide foot? Leather? Suede? Patent? You’ve got it.

What struck me then and still does now is that Fox’s e-tailer was founded on a customisation business model built on bringing customers new and interesting yet quality and luxurious methods of shopping. They put fun back into shoes. It was pure genius and ahead of its time.

Fast forward seven years and I was travelling to LA to partake in a two day campaign shoot with Jodie, Megan and Kim. On the flight over, it really dawned on me the reality and immense privilege my life and career has afforded me. Honestly, who the f*#% flies to LA to shoot a campaign with three of the most beautiful women on the planet to hero a shoe collection they just designed?

While I try to practice being present, I admit I don’t always take a moment to just stop and be proud. We women need to do this more. I’m one of those people that finds it difficult to accept a compliment or form of praise. In fact, it makes me feel downright awkward and uncomfortable (I know, I know – I’m trying to work on it). But for some reason, on that flight to LA, I stopped. I was proud. I am proud. And, why shouldn’t us women be? For me anyway, my career has moved at lightning pace since I started working at 18 years of age as an intern at Cosmopolitan magazine assisting then-beauty editor, Zoë Foster Blake. At that moment, I quickly realised there have been key women who have shaped me both personally and professionally – lifting me up – and not dragging me down.

With that in mind, I decided to dedicate my collection to them; The Renegades. Each of the five designs is named after a special woman in my life who inspired me, in one way or another, to push the boundaries and go after what I am passionate about. They didn’t conform to conventional wisdom or play by the book; they set their own agendas, paved their own paths and nailed it. My collection is my own personal thank you to these amazing women who have made such a positive impact on me.

And so, it is my greatest pleasure to introduce you to The Renegades.
