A Beauty Girl’s Guide To Tasmania
The Gritty Pretty guide to what to see, eat and do in our southernmost state.
When you picture Tasmania, you probably think of charming towns, sweeping mountain views and world-class dining. But did you know it’s the ultimate beauty destination too? From a bespoke babymoon from the team at Brillo Beauty, to a must-try Hollywood facial, here is the Gritty Pretty guide to the very best in beauty across Tassie.
STAY
Before you even book in your beauty treatments, you’re going to want to make a reservation at luxury boutique accommodation Stillwater Seven. Located in an old flour mill by the river in Launceston, it has only seven rooms, offering a quiet place for a restful trip away. The design features are moody, using dark local timbers and natural accents. Lounge on the king-sized bed while you watch the river pass by and sip Tasmanian wine from the extremely well-stocked mini-bar (the freeze-dried chocolate-covered blueberries are a must..). With extremely attentive staff (they’ll remember your coffee order and deliver it to your door), incredible dining options (more on that below) and only steps away from Cataract Gorge, Stillwater Seven is the ultimate place to base yourself at while you explore all that Tasmania has to offer.
For those who crave something out of the ordinary, private abode Lumière Lodge deserves a spot on the list. This whimsical accommodation in the heart of Hobart is a lovingly restored Victorian-style home with quirky features at every turn. Upon check-in, guests are treated to a homemade cocktail to enjoy by the fire (or in the clawed-foot bathtub) and will find the fridge stocked with local treats. Lumière Lodge has three bedrooms stocked with Le Labo amenities and Cultiver linen, while beautiful antique oil paintings and stained glass windows complete the space. Lumière Lodge is the perfect alternative to a hotel for those with a uniquely creative spirit.
DO
Our good friends at Brillo Beauty have teamed up with Stillwater Seven for the ultimate indulgent getaway for beauty girls who are also soon-to-be mums. Designed to truly celebrate you before bub’s arrival, the Brillo Beauty Babymoon package has everything: two nights accommodation in a premium king suite with a bathtub, a pack including every single Brillo Beauty product(!) (our favourite is The Oil), a chocolate hamper on arrival, daily in-room breakfast, dinner at Stillwater and even a rejuvenating facial at nearby Sanctum Medical. We can’t think of a better way to honour such a special time in your life, especially if you’re a true beauty girl!
Whether or not you’re booked in as part of the Brillo Beauty Babymoon, Sanctum Medical is worth a visit. Located in the town of Launceston, Sanctum is a leading cosmetic medical practice specialising in advanced skin therapies. We highly recommend what’s called A Hollywood Facial—the perfect pre-event treatment to get your skin glowing.
A design centre paying homage to local Tasmanian designers, Design Tasmania is a great spot to spend an afternoon browsing contemporary art or shopping local crafts at the gift shop.
If you’re anything like us, you like to be across the local hair salons—just in case you need a blow dry on your visit. Bob Hair on Tamar is located in the middle of Launceston and is a little haven of beauty that is worth a visit.
For when you’re in the mood for a spot of shopping, Homeroom Design in Hobart has you covered. Selling brands like Camilla & Marc, Bassike and Outland Denim, they also have an excellent beauty offering including Who Is Elijah fragrances, Gentle Habits incense and Foile skincare.
Mona
We’re pretty sure Mona (the Museum of Old and New Art) doesn’t need an introduction but we’ll give you one anyway. Considered one of Australia’s best art museums, Mona, is unique for both its location (carved into the headline at Berriedale near Hobart), and its world-renowned art collection. This is a playful museum designed to shock and wow. We won’t say too much else, or it’d be giving too much away…
A program led by The Material Institute, which was founded in alignment with Mona, The Beauty Lab is a charity founded by Mona curator Kirsha Kaechele to give local communities a creative outlet to achieve their full potential. Running classes which fuse science with beauty, The Beauty Lab will also soon be home to a cafe where visitors can sip lattes while enjoying the community gardenscape.
EAT
An award-winning restaurant located at boutique hotel Stillwater Seven in Launceston, Stillwater offers casual fine dining with locally-grown produce. The wine list boasts an excellent selection of Tassie wines (as it should), paired with Tasmanian Tarkine oysters, Rannoch Farm quail, market fish and even wallaby.
Hobart-based husband and wife duo, Rodney Dunn and Séverine Demanet fell in love with the beautiful Bronte building in New Norfolk’s Willow Court—the town’s old mental asylum—and turned it into a restaurant complete with its own garden and cooking school. Visitors can take tours, workshops, or visit for lunch, enjoying a cocktail in the greenhouse before they dine.
A cocktail bar which honours the world of fine drinking, Mary Mary is an eclectic space set in the sandstone walls of the old St Mary’s Hospital building in Hobart.
After a cocktail at Mary Mary, head next door to Peppina for rich Italian fare with a focus on the best of Tasmanian produce.
With spectacular harbour views and a design-forward restaurant, Aloft brings the best of Tasmanian dining together under one roof. Highlighting the relationship between nature, quality produce and Hobart history, this open-plan restaurant is nothing short of special.
Have plans to visit Mona? Book a table at Faro for lunch and dine in this secret restaurant hidden inside the museum with views suspended over the river. The food is fancy and as creatively presented as the art and there’s even surprise performances while you dine.
