#NOTSPONSORED: Why Crème De La Mer Is Loved By J.Lo, Kim Kardashian And Chrissy Teigen

Everything to know about this beauty icon.

New beauty launches fly thick and fast. Every day, we are presented with a new, you-beaut product—each promising to change our lives and ensure we never (ever!) get a wrinkle again.

Despite all of the noise in the market, there are a handful of old-faithful products that have stood the test of time. Why? Because they work—and they have a loyal following of fans to prove it.

Today, we’re throwing the spotlight on Crème de la Mer. It’s fair to say this product has reached icon status. But what makes it so special? And is it worth the hefty price tag? We investigate.

The Name: Crème de la Mer

The Sell: According to the brand’s website: “This luxuriously rich cream immerses skin in deep all day moisture, helping soothe dryness and help repair skin’s essential barrier. Skin immediately feels firmer, soft-to-the-touch, supple and smooth. Helps repair signs of ageing as lines, redness and irritation appear reduced.”

The Price Tag: $730 / 100ml via La Mer’s website

The Fans: The real question: is there a Hollywood A-lister who isn’t a fan of Crème de la Mer? Chrissy Teigen, Ashley Tisdale, Jessica Hart, Khloé Kardashian, Kim Kardashian West, Gal Gadot, Blake Lively and Sienna Miller have all gone on the record about their love for the formula.

The Ingredients: La Mer cites two hero ingredients: Miracle Broth and Lime Tea.

Miracle Broth is, without a doubt, the brand’s most lauded ingredient. Completely unique to La Mer, this fermented extract is created using a long and intricate process. First, a specific variety of sea kelp—Macrocystis Pyrifera—is harvested from Canada’s Pacific Coast at the time it is most nutrient rich. Within 24 hours, it is transported to a lab. The kelp is then combined with other ingredients, including vitamins C, E and B12 and oils of citrus, eucalyptus and alfalfa, and fermented for three to four months.

This is where things get a little bit kooky: the brand’s founder, Max Huber, introduced sonochemistry to create the perfect active ingredient—or Miracle Broth, as it is now known. To this day, soundwaves and light are pulsed throughout the bio fermentation process. Huber swore that by following this process, the benefits of Miracle Broth were dramatically enhanced – and La Mer continue to follow Huber’s method. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

The Best Way To Use It: Apply a small amount of the product to fingers and warm for a few seconds by smoothing fingertips together. Once translucent, gently press into face and neck.

The Benefits: Crème de la Mer is thick – for the most part, it will benefit those with skin that is dry or mature. If your skin errs on the oily side, it probably isn’t the right fit for you – try the brand’s Moisturizing Cool Gel Cream instead.

With a little help from Miracle Broth, Crème de la Mer helps calm inflammation (the root of all evil when it comes to skin), slows down the destruction of collagen and can help to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles and an uneven skin tone.

The Verdict: For dry, dehydrated and/or ageing skin, Crème de la Mer is a god send. For your bank account, not so much. But hey, you can’t keep everybody happy, right?
