If the year 2020 has taught us anything it’s that life goes on, even when we’re forced to slow down. A silver lining in a year that has been confusing, jarring and stressful (to say the very least), we have been given a gift that is as rare as it is valuable: time. More time to spend at home baking, more time to spend reading in the depths of our couch and more time to spend on self care; on ourselves. Much more than a beauty buzzword, self care is instrumental in helping women, and particularly mothers, recharge and be able to show up for themselves, their friends and their families. You can’t give from an empty tank, after all.

And we’ll be damned if you can name a better method of self care than caring for your hair. Frequently placed on the beauty backburner, we often forget the impact that good hair has on our confidence. When our hair is healthy and behaving, our day is just that little bit sweeter. For Gritty Pretty’s first Real Reader Review of 2020, we had three mothers from our beloved Gritty Pretty Gang (sign up here, if haven’t already!) trial a selection of Alterna Haircare products suited to their individual hair type and concerns. A religious commitment to self care for 30 days (this soon became almost three months, thank you very much lockdown), we asked the members to use them exclusively, every time they even considered a hair wash or style.
