We Asked Selena Gomez About Her Favourite Makeup Products And This Is What She Said

Mark today in your calendar: August 5, 2021: that’s the day when Selena Gomez’s highly-anticipated beauty brand, Rare Beauty, finally made it to Australian shores (thank you, Sephora Australia!). To celebrate the occasion, Gritty Pretty had a chance to quiz the founder at Rare Beauty—Gomez herself—all about her beauty brand. The 29-year-old actor, singer, television producer (and one of the most-followed people on Instagram of all time) first launched her makeup line in the US back in September 2020 and ever since then, we’ve been patiently waiting for it to launch here too. Rare Beauty is all about celebrating your individuality—what makes you rare? It spans base products, lips, cheeks, eyes, and other beauty accessories. 

“Rare has been an important word in my life for a long time—it’s a powerful reminder that we’re all unique and special, and I want to celebrate that,” Gomez tells Gritty Pretty. “My goal with Rare Beauty is to help break down the unrealistic standards of beauty we see in society today, as well as create a safe, welcoming space in beauty—and beyond—that supports the mental well-being of our community.”

What goes hand-in-hand with that vision is Gomez’s sustainability focus: the line is vegan and cruelty-free plus the boxes that house the products are 100% recyclable and made from responsibly sourced, FSC-certified materials, and printed with water-based ink. Packing items such as the shipping box and welcome card are made from recycled fiber, are FSC certified, and 100% recyclable. Plus, Gomez is already working to do better—a statement on her website explains she plans to “gradually introduce post-consumer recycled materials into our packaging beginning in late 2021.”

Here, Gomez, shares her AM and PM skincare routine and picks out her absolute favourite products from the Rare Beauty lineup. 

What does your morning skincare routine look like?  

My morning skincare routine is to cleanse (I’ve been using the La Mer cleanser recently), moisturise, and I always use sunscreen!

What is your everyday look makeup-wise, when you’re not working? What makeup products are staples in your cabinet and why do you love them?  

I keep it pretty simple when I’m not working and take 10 minutes to do my makeup. I’ll use the Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer to spot conceal, the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush because it’s so pigmented and lasts all day, and the Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm because it feels like a lip mask, but it looks like a gloss. It’s one of the most comfortable glosses ever. 

What is your nightly skincare routine like? Are there any must-do rituals you do each evening?  

I always start by removing my makeup, then I cleanse, mist my face, and finish with moisturiser (also La Mer). 

What would you say are your top 5 favourite beauty and wellness tips that you’ve picked up while working as an actor and singer, as well as during the creation of Rare Beauty?  

1. Drink water. 
2. Wear sunscreen.
3. Meditate—even finding 10 minutes in my day makes a big difference.
4. Take baths—it instantly relaxes me.  
5. Positive affirmations—I keep little “Rare Reminders” on post-it notes on my mirror with positive words and reminders that give me a boost throughout the day.
