Best In Beauty: The Gritty Pretty Team On Their Favourite Beauty Looks From The 2022 Oscars

Just out here for the beauty looks…

It’s Oscars day, baby! With the who’s who of Hollywood rolling into the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 90th annual Academy Awards, it’s unsurprising that some showstopping beauty looks have been created. You only have to look so far as the hosts (Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer) to get a glimpse of the glitz and glamour that has graced the red carpet so far.

Naturally, the topic of Gritty Pretty’s morning meeting didn’t veer too far from Oscars chatter, with the team all sharing who they were most excited to see nail their beauty looks at the 2022 event. But, who wants to stop at one top pick? Not us! Here, the Gritty Pretty team share their two favourite Oscars beauty looks from Hollywood’s night of nights.

Lily James

“Lily James wowed us in Pam & Tommy and she wowed me again this morning with her dreamy burgundy beauty look. Gracing the red carpet with the perfect undone, 90s blowout and a sultry wine-toned smokey eye, James looked every part the Hollywood golden girl. Now to work out how her hairstylist, Danilo Dixon, managed to get that much volume in her long brunette locks!”

Zendaya

“If there’s someone I always trust to nail the red carpet, it’s Zendaya. Her look is always carefully considered by her stylist, Law Roach, and I love how this extends to her beauty. Living for the soft updo which is a modern take on a Hollywood classic, while the silver eyeshadow complements the fashion—finishing it with a simple nude lip gloss is genius and grounds the look.”

– Danielle Gay, Beauty Director & Executive Editor

Zoë Kravitz

“I’ll admit that Zoë Kravitz can’t really do wrong in my eyes. Starring as Cat Woman in the recent The Batman film, I was expecting something dark and smokey but was pleasantly surprised by her girly take on the red carpet. Opting for a classic cat eye winged eyeliner with a copper wash over the lid and keeping her signature side bangs neatly slicked to one side, I will definitely be trying to recreate this look. Will I look as cool as Kravitz? Unlikely. But it’s worth a shot.”

– Rose Garnett, Beauty Editor

Alana Haim

“I recently watched Alana Haim in Liquorice Pizza and I loved how real her skin looked. The director didn’t shy away from showing any smile lines or dark circles which was so refreshing. Naturally, when you attend the Oscars, one may choose to take this opportunity to glam it up a little so I loved her low-key and classic approach. She shows how a little lip colour, a touch of mascara and a sweeping of blush can elevate your natural beauty so effortlessly.”

– Nicola Sevitt, Special Projects Producer

Lupita Nyong’o

“Always bold with her red carpet beauty looks, I loved Lupita Nyong’o’s double pop of colour. A dash of gold eyeshadow on the lid to tie in with her sequined dress and a berry lip to add an element of surprise, I think she absolutely nailed it.”

– Hannah Brooks, Junior Designer

Sofia Carson

“It seems slicked hair is back in a big way and I loved Sofia Carson’s approach to the trend as she graced the Oscars red carpet. Perfectly complimenting her incredible black tulle ball gown, the slick hair let the makeup do all the talking. A smokey cat eye with chiselled cheekbones and a perfect nude lip, it doesn’t get much more classic than this!”

– Eleanor Pendleton, Founder & Editor-in-Chief

Jessica Chastain

“Jessica Chastain always brings Hollywood glamour! The best actress nominee wore peachy gold makeup tones which looked stunning against her iconic red hair, which was swept back into a chic pony.”

– Danielle Gay, Beauty Director & Executive Editor

Penelope Cruz

“An old Hollywood glam hairstyle will get me every single time–and Penelope Cruz has nailed it. Looking radiant on the red carpet in her burgundy eye look and perfectly swept hair, I can’t quite get past how perfect her skin looks. With Charlotte Tilbury the maestro behind the makeup, I’m going to recommend you get in quick if you need a Hollywood Flawless Filter top up!”

– Rose Garnett, Beauty Editor

Vanessa Hudgens

“I only have one word to describe Vanessa Hudgens’s incredible beauty look: snatched. Pulling off the slicked bun and sultry winged liner like no other, Hudgens looked incredible hosting the red carpet show. I also loved how the eyeliner was extended beyond her inner corner to give that elongated eye effect. I will definitely be trying!”

– Nicola Sevitt, Special Projects Producer

Naomi Scott

“A classic winged eyeliner look paired with a sleek side-part is a match made in heaven (and Naomi Scott is not the only one who got the memo this year). I love how this simple look has allowed her glowing skin to be the main character and let her incredible purple dress do all the talking.”

– Hannah Brooks, Junior Designer
