The Best Runway Beauty Trends From Afterpay Australian Fashion Week 2022

And we’re off…
Yep, it’s that time of year again! Fashion Week is back…and with a vengeance. Celebrating the post-Covid creativity that has taken over the fashion and beauty industry in the last 12 months, this Afterpay Australian Fashion Week is set to be one of the best yet. If international runways are anything to go by we are expecting some seriously cool beauty looks to strut in front of us. So, consider this your one-stop beauty trend breakdown for the week.
Whether it’s a bright lipstick moment, a barely there skin look or a low, knotted hairstyle, we are here to give you all the behind-the-scenes goss on how you can nail the looks in the comfort of your own home. Now, without further adieu, these are the beauty trends our eagle-eyed team have spotted this year at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week.

Lip à l’Orange
Where: Bianca Spender, Bondi Born
What: Pack away your blue-toned red lip and opt for a summery orange shade to make a statement instead. Walking the runway donning stunning hues of orange, the Bianca Spender and Bondi Born shows had us desperate to add a pop of colour to our Day One looks. Complemented by a mixture of low knotted buns and subtle cool-girl waves, the beauty look kicked off Fashion Week with a bang.
Blue Hue
Where: Bondi Born, Bec And Bridge
What: Ice blue winged liner took centre stage at Bondi Born’s AAFW show. With models rocking a colourful flick to complement the collection’s fluoro tone, the makeup look was tied in with a tight yet undone updo that we can’t wait to recreate. Bec And Bridge also opted for a blue eye look to show off their oh-so 90s collection. This one a little darker than Bondi Born’s, the brand went for a navy blue, shimmering smokey eye which gave the runway the perfect amount of edge.
Wet Weather
Where: Bec And Bridge, Sass And Bide
What: Wet-look hair is back–and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Created by Redken’s hair director Diane Gorgievski, Bec And Bridge’s wet-look hair made us all want to hit the showers. Perfecting the texture by scrunching the product in (for that effortless, cool-girl style), the hair was a serious moment. The same could be said for the wet-look hair at Sass and Bide. Created by Redken, there was a mixture of updos and textured waves making us think wet-look hair is a lot more versatile than first anticipated.
Rainbow Days
Where: Romance Was Born
What: Complementing the incredible bold and colourful fashion collection with not one but 19 (!) individual makeup looks, the Romance Was Born beauty moment was one for the ages. Created by makeup veteran Nicole (Pinkie) Thompson, the eye makeup was as colourful as it was experimental and the look was perfectly finished with a bright pink lip. Thompson said of the look, “The Romance Was Born beauty look was inspired by all things tropical. Think the way colours and textures move underwater, the way colours grade into each other on tropical fish and are punctuated by a clashing vibrant hue.”
Peaches And Cream
Where: Beare Park, Oroton
What: Elevating the barely-there makeup trend with a dash of subtle peach tones, the makeup at Beare Park’s second ever show was some serious wearable beauty inspiration. Opting for a monochrome colour story across the eyes and lips, the beauty look was tied together by perfectly undone hair that celebrated each model’s natural texture. We saw the peach makeup look on models at Oroton as well, balancing out the brightness of the collection.
Barely There
Where: Matteau, Aje
What: Known for its minimalistic colour palette and flowing silhouettes, the beauty look at this year’s Matteau show was the perfect barely there inspiration. Think glowing skin, defined lashes and flowing hair that looked like it was straight from the ocean front. Aje also took a similar skin-focused approach, with the models getting on-site facials thanks to Sunday Riley. Aje Beauty Director, Isabella Schimid said of the look, “This look is all about skin. Using Sunday Riley we were able to create that unmistakable Aje-girl glow with just a few products.” With complexions that glowing, it seems we may need a routine overhaul.
White Out
Where: St Agni
What: Forget winging out your liner at the end of your eyelid, inner corner pops of colour is where it’s at–that is, according to St Agni. With models donning a white inner corner highlight as they strode down the runway in the brand’s latest collection, the makeup look was classic with just the right amount of edge.

Get Down Low
Where: Esse
What: This may have been Esse’s first ever fashion show, but the beauty look was stuff of seasoned professionals. With sleek tailoring and a neutral colour palette, the beauty look was able to take centre stage. Making a (very) strong case for the pin straight low ponytail, it seems we will all be wearing the chic, undone hairstyle come winter.
Primary Parade
Where: Daniel Avakian
What: Who says blue and red can’t be friends? Not Daniel Avakian! Elevating the perfectly eclectic collection with bright red lipstick and bold blue eyeshadow, the beauty look was one to write home about. (Seriously, we sent pics into the family group chat). Topped only by the incredible twisted knot updo created by Redken, we couldn’t get enough of this showstopping look.
Smoke Show
Where: Sass And Bide
What: Why choose between a smokey eye and a dramatic winged liner when you can have both? Sass And Bide embraced the drama and went for a purple-toned smokey eye to complement another beautiful collection. The addition of dramatic false lashes made the eyes really stand out on the runway.
Twist And Shout
Where: Daniel Avakian
What: A modern (and very high fashion) take on the mohawk, the hair at Daniel Avakian’s show was structural and stunning. Created by Richard Kavanagh for Redken, the twisted knot sat on the crown of the models’s heads, creating height and dimension and perfectly complementing the runway collection.
Braids Are Back
Where: Hansen & Gretel, Next Gen
What: The perfect bohemian beauty look to complement Hansen & Gretel’s new patterned collection, braids were back in a big way on the runway. With Redken hair director Diane Gorgievski creating two micro braids in the models’s perfectly waved hair, we couldn’t help but notice the 90s Kate Moss reference. Safe to say, we were loving it. The braid trend was also taken to new heights at the Next Gen show with Redken hair director Richard Kavanagh creating asymmetrical braids all over the models’s heads. Edgy, intricate and chic!
All About Angles
Where: L’IDÉE WOMAN
What: Perfectly complementing the bright colours of the L’IDÉE WOMAN collection with bright, angular eyeliner, we couldn’t get enough of the beauty look created by makeup artist Jade Kisnorbo. “I focused on a beautiful satin finish on the skin using the Maybelline Fit Me Tinted Moisturiser and, together with L’IDÉE WOMAN’s designer Bree, we incorporated a snippet of colour using an angular shape.”
