These Are The Beauty Trends To Look Out For In 2024
We’ve got our fingers on the pulse.
Like the seasons, trends come and go. Some stick around longer than others, some are ‘old’ trends reemerging and others simply aren’t for the faint hearted (looking at you, bold eyeshadow). In 2023, we saw the rise of glazed donut nails, barbiecore, side parts and latte makeup. Now, as we head into the new year, there are new beauty trends on the horizon.
So, what does 2024 have in store for us beauty lovers? You’ve come to the right place. Whether you prefer your beauty to be more au naturel or are a little adventurous, there’s something for everyone, we promise. Below you’ll find Gritty Pretty’s edit of the top beauty trends to look out for this year.
DROP RED GORGEOUS
Don’t throw away that red Christmas nail polish or lip liner, red is about to have a resurgence. A classic for a reason, red has long been a go-to colour in beauty. From a bold red lip to red polish on the fingertips, it’s a colour that exudes elegance and can always be relied upon to elevate a look. Having been the colour of choice for beauty lovers for centuries, we saw a small dip in its popularity over the last couple of years with the rise of neutral makeup and nude lip trends. Well, good news for those red lip lovers among us—2024 is about to be your year. Expect to see all-red-everything, from lips and nails to cherry-red hair.
BALLETCORE
Barbiecore is out, balletcore is in. We first saw the rise of ballet-inspired beauty in 2023 thanks to the runways of New York, Milan and Paris fashion weeks, but it’s a trend that is seemingly here to stay. With TikTokkers inspiring each other to decorate their Christmas trees with bows this Christmas (myself included), balletcore is everywhere. Get ready to raise the barre and say hello to ribbons in the hair, ballerina-inspired buns and bow decal nails.
LINE THEM UP
Get your steady hands at the ready because graphic eyeliner should be on your radar in 2024. Think bold shapes, reverse liner, sharp wings and colourful accents. Although it might take a little practice, the graphic liner trend is one that can be entirely customised to your preference. You might choose to start slow with a tonal brown liner, go all in with a bold colour like cobalt blue, add a glitter liner or keep it classic black—the options are endless. The key with this trend is to experiment and, most importantly, have fun.
PEACHY KEEN
In case you missed it, Pantone recently announced their Colour of the Year 2024 as ‘PANTONE 12-1023 Peach Fuzz’. So, naturally, we expect peachy-hues to blow up in the beauty world as a result. Described by Pantone as a “velvety gentle peach tone whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul,” the colour is one that can be brought into beauty seamlessly. Think peachy blushes, eyeshadows, lips and even nails. The colour, if not already, is set to be the tone of the Australian summer and we’re peachy keen.
SKIN IS ALWAYS IN
Thought we were finished with the no-makeup makeup trend? Think again. With the hashtag ‘#skinimilism’ attracting a huge 52 million monthly views across TikTok as recently as November, it’s safe to say that skin will always be in. Focussed on minimalistic skincare and makeup routines that produce glowy complexions, this trend is one that can be achieved by all. Simply add an illuminating primer, dewy moisturiser or radiant skin tint to your routine, top it off with a hint of blush and embrace that fresh face. Remember: less is more.
MONOCHROME MADNESS
Just like the strawberry girl, pumpkin spice and latte makeup trends that dominated the last half of 2023, monochromatic makeup looks are set to take the lead again this year. The trend, which rose to popularity across TikTok, involves selecting a single-colour palette and creating a look with subtle tone variations across the eyes, lips and complexion. Neutral tones like soft browns, taupes and subtle pinks are easy to incorporate for every day, whereas deeper shades can be brought in for a more elevated event look.
’90s REVIVAL
Back once again are the ‘90s—and we’re not talking about baggy jeans or blue eyeshadow. This time, ombré lips are in the spotlight. Regaining momentum across the beauty-sphere, ombré lips are set to be the lip trend of 2024. Although an ombre effect can be achieved with bold shades like deep reds, this year it’s all about accentuating your natural lip colour and shape, making them appear more plump and defined. To achieve the look, simply select a lip liner that is two or three shades deeper than your natural lip colour and begin by outlining your lip line, topping it off with your go-to nude lipstick or a gloss.
SHINE BRIGHT
Forget matte; this year it’s time to shine bright like a diamond—quite literally. Iridescent beauty is set to be at the forefront over the coming months with chrome finishes, light reflecting shades and high shine glosses being what we will reach for in 2024. Viral sell-out products like the Urban Decay Moondust eyeshadow is proof as to how big this trend has already become, with everyone on social media and beyond hoping to find hero products that give the perfect iridescent finish. Unlike graphic eyeliner, this trend is more foolproof and can be as easy as adding a shimmery highlighter on top of your eyeshadow, or a high-shine gloss over your favourite lippy.
