Your Foolproof Guide To Beauty Supplements

With wellness messaging now a mainstay in the beauty sphere, beauty powders and elixirs seem to be popping up everywhere. Whether it’s a daily collagen booster, protein powder, greens powder or skin elixir, it seems our pantries have gone from overflowing with condiments and corn chips to overflowing with ingestible beauty supplements.

But like that saying about too much of a good thing, overdoing the wellness supplements could do you more harm than good. Plus, if your regular diet and exercise regimen errs on the unhealthy side of the spectrum, you can’t rely on these poor little powders to bring you back to life. How does one streamline their energy boosting elixir routine, you ask? We enlisted the help of Pernille Jensen, Founder of The Gut Co and Fiona Tuck, Nutritional Medical Practitioner, to guide us through it.

What They Do

“Beauty powders are designed to contain a combination of nutrient rich wholefoods to supply skin loving vitamins, minerals, prebiotics and important phytochemicals,” says Tuck. “Cells require nutrients for cellular energy, metabolism, detoxification and antioxidant production and beauty supplements can help you get the recommended amount.”

Said recommended amount is essential as it helps to reduce inflammation and premature ageing in the skin. It can also assist in promoting optimal digestion which Jensen says aids in upping your energy levels (as you don’t exert as much trying to digest your three meals a day).

What To Look For

Just like all other beauty products, beauty supplements are not one size fits all. It’s important to understand exactly what your body needs before jumping into a new elixir or powder. This will not only save you money but it will also ensure you don’t have a strange reaction to a product you didn’t even need.

A good rule of thumb? “Everything stems from your gut,” says Jensen. “So if you don’t know where to start I would look for a beauty powder or elixir that contains ingredients to improve gut function and increase the availability of essential vitamins and minerals.” Opting for a gut-loving elixir to start will help support your entire body in general, which, by default, will improve your energy levels and skin.

Tuck agrees, advising that rather than focusing on isolated high dose nutrient supplements, we should be looking for “a multi-prebiotic blend to support gut health, nutrient absorption and to provide a blend of energy supporting nutrients like B Vitamins, Magnesium, Vitamin C and essential fatty acids.”

Some of our favourites for a bit o’ gut-loving include The Beauty Chef’s Glow Powder and The Gut Co’s Repair Powder.

What To Avoid

We hate to be the bearers of bad news but no amount of beauty elixirs or powders will be able to undo an unhealthy lifestyle. So, Tuck advises against looking at beauty supplements as quick fixes.

“Remember that no pill or powder will be able to counteract an unhealthy lifestyle,” she says. “Whilst beauty powders and elixirs can supply nutrients to help support healthy skin, if your diet is unhealthy or you’re drinking too much [alcohol], you’re undoing all the good work.”

Adding a beauty powder or elixir into your everyday routine will do good things (like curb your three o’clock sugar cravings and help balance your blood sugar) but only when done in conjunction with a balanced diet and exercise routine. Yep, no shortcuts here.

How To Remember

Arguably the most challenging part of implementing a new beauty powder into your routine is actually remembering to take it. Whether you’re running out the door with kids in the morning or leaving the house half asleep at 5:45am to make it to pilates, we know you have a lot on. But consistency is key with these bad boys so remembering to actually take them is kind of vital.

“Choosing something that works for you and your daily routine [will help you remember],” says Tuck. “If you have a coffee every morning, for example, then incorporating a flavourless marine collagen into your morning is easy to do. If you drink smoothies then adding a beauty powder to your smoothie can super boost your beauty routine.”

Jensen agrees, adding, “If you find that you go for a three o’clock chocolate or coffee try replacing it with a beauty powder to curb your sugar cravings but give you a hit of sweetness.”

We love adding either the Honne Super Protein or the WelleCo Super Elixir into our morning smoothies for an extra boost or, if we’re low on time, a shot of the Vida Glow Collagen Elixir will tick the daily ‘do something of yourself’ box.

At the end of the day, it’s just about finding what works best for you.
