Classic ballerina chignons are always in; and sleek, high, dominatrix-y style ponytails definitely had their time in the spotlight.

Thank gosh that’s over. Yeah, I’m talking to you, Ariana Grande!

But if you’re looking for a new addition to your up-do repertoire, the key is, ironically, taking it down a notch.

The reason being ponytails, buns, and braids that start at the nape of the neck are having a major moment. Just look to the spring/summer 2015 runways: at Alexander Wang, hairstylist Guido Palau created an elegant, sleek offering; at Peter Som, Eugene Souleiman made a low, Spanish braid (olé!); and at Edun, James Pecis pulled hair into a low, samurai-inspired bun.

And it’s easy to see why these styles are often considered the crème de la crème. They are inherently relaxed and the best part is they don’t require an advanced science degree to create.

In fact, there’s now how-to on the table today. Here, I’ve simply finger combed my hair back and secured with an elastic. Brain science, huh?

Seriously though, the whole point is ponytails are meant to look simple. But somehow, they’re sophisticated and modern at the same time. Perfect for lounging around the house on rainy days in nothing but deliciously soft, grey knits like this.
