If the above came out of Grant Denyer’s mouth on an episode of Family Feud (1) that would be awesome, and (2) there’s no doubt some variation of perfect beach waves would be on the board.

The effortless-looking style does take some skill to master so we’ve tapped TRESemmé Hair Ambassador/ celebrity hair stylist, Justine Marjan (protégé of Jen Atkin; does red-carpet waves for Khloe Kardashian and Kerry Washington) to share her tips. Even practiced hands might pick up something new as Marjan matches the right tool and technique with different hair types to create those coveted, undone waves, below –

WAVY/CURLY HAIR

Tool: Clip-Shape.

Technique: If you’ve been #blessed with a pre-existing natural curl, Marjan suggests this low-maintenance technique that requires no heat styling. Apply a hair oil (try: Kérastase Elixir Ultime Beautifying Oil) through towel-dried hair. Then, twist hair into ‘S-shaped’ loops resembling a wave pattern. Hold these in place with duck bill clips so hair air dries with “shape memory”, creating a natural, undone wave. Optional: blow dry to speed up the process.

STRAIGHT, FINE HAIR

Tool: Curling Iron.

Technique: Start by prepping dry hair with a light-hold hairspray (Marjan recommends: TRESemmé Perfectly (Un)done Ultra Brushable Hairspray). Then, use a small curling iron (try: the beloved Cloud Nine Micro Wand) on small sections of hair, alternating the direction of the iron. For casual waves, start the curl a quarter of the way down the section. Finish the style with some sea salt pomade on the ends for a texturised finish (we love: R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste).

STRAIGHT, THICK HAIR

Tool: Straightening Iron.

Technique: Those with straight, thick hair should use a flat iron, instructs Marjan. (We recommend investing in a high quality one like ghd’s NEW Platinum Tropic Sky Styler.) Again, prep dry hair with a light-hold hairspray. Then, use the flat iron on small sections, bevelling down the section in an S-shaped pattern (think: spiral staircases). Finish the look with an aerosol Dry Shampoo (try: R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo) at the roots and throughout hair for a messy, matte finish that Marjan deems very “California girl”. We’re sold.
