GET THE LOOK: MISHA NONOO A/W 15

At Misha Nonoo A/W 15, it was a case of models doing it for themselves. Literally.

Backstage before the New York runway show, models styled their own hair (yes, you read that right!) into deep side part, low-slung ponytails.

Held at a warehouse in the Meatpacking District, the large backstage area was a quiet affair compared to the usual mayhem beauty editors like myself have grown accustomed to.

“We want to celebrate personal style, inspiring women to champion their individuality and their hair’s natural beauty,” Nonoo told Gritty Pretty before the show.

While models certainly weren’t left hanging and professional hair stylists were on call to help guide them through the look,  “[Misha] wanted the girls hair to look like they did their hair themselves. So, what better way to get that look than to actually get the girls to do it?” said Ryan Trysgstad, hair stylist for TRESemmé.

Each model was given the chance to part her own hair (based on her best side) and apply gel to her roots. Next, she diffused her own strands using a foam to bring out her hair’s natural texture. Then, each model was responsible for brushing her hair back into a ponytail and adding matte black bobby pins in the pattern of her choice. The final step was a blast of hair spray.

The look itself was said to be influenced by the “90s loose waves and classic, textured hair from some of our favourite covers and shows of that era” says Trysgstad. “She’s a Downtown girl – her hair is textured and thrown back. She’s very cool.”

Whereas most designers look for consistency on the catwalk, no style was quite the same. Each model was able to put her stamp of originality on her hair, which brings a refreshing new meaning “runway DIY.”

While the ponytail looked simple, I wanted to put it to the test, recreating the look myself a few days later whilst staying at the Soho Grand Hotel in New York.

Suffice to say, it was foolproof (even surviving the elements of extreme wind chill) and took me less than five minutes to create, which to be honest, is just the way I like to keep my beauty routine. Easy and simple.
