Considering Going Blonde? Our Beauty Director’s Hair Transformation Will Convince You

The brief? Bright and creamy blonde.

For the brunettes among us, the allure of going blonde is ever-present. Personally, something as simple as a scroll through Instagram can leave me with blonde hair envy (hello, Renee Bargh and Lara Worthington!). There’s something about the way sunshine hits blonde hair in the summertime that makes that urge even stronger and so this year, I figured, why not take the plunge? The first step? Consulting the team at EdwardsAndCo, who are the best in the business when it comes to a blonde hair transformation.

If you haven’t heard of EdwardsAndCo, it’s a hairdressing salon with boutiques across the east coast of Australia, including three here in Sydney. On the day of my hair transformation, I was greeted by KK Tulisi, a colourist, stylist and educator who works at the EdwardsAndCo Crown Street salon. She assessed my hair and shared the verdict: her recommendation was that we create a “bright and creamy blonde.” I could tell I was in the hands of an expert so we went for it.

“Your hair was very grown out, meaning the colour had become pretty dull,” Tulisi says of how my hair looked before. She was right—I’d allowed it to grow out over the Covid-19 lockdowns and since it looked and felt healthy, I hadn’t given the colour much thought. But I wanted something light and bright that could take me into 2022. When deciding on the exact shade of “creamy blonde”, Tulisi considered my eye colour, skin tone and brows, in order to determine something that would not only suit me but take my look to the next level.

After briefing me on the colour, Tulisi started applying the colour and foils to my hair: “To achieve the final result we did a 3/4 head of highlights and a full head of tip-outs. The highlights create dimension at the top, while the tip-out creates much brighter ends for more of a balayage effect.” Tulisi used Redken’s Shade EQ gloss, which she says “contains the perfect balance of protein, moisture & acidic PH, for healthy hair.”

A word of warning: the complete colour and cut took six hours—a beautiful colour that’s executed properly (and safely) takes time. If you’re thinking of going blonde, it’s important to chat to your EdwardsAndCo colourist about the process and the time it’ll take to achieve it. I’d of course blocked out the whole day (perks of being a beauty director!). EdwardsAndCo is all about the health of the hair, as well as beautiful long-lasting colour, which is why my stylist used Redken’s Shade EQ gloss. Tulisi says: “Redken colour is the perfect choice, as it respects each person’s own canvas and delivers each colour tone in the healthiest way. No two hair types are the same, so Redken colour is truly for every hair type.” So although it took almost all day to achieve my transformation, I enjoyed watching Tulisi work—she delicately applied highlight after highlight and hours later, when it was ready, washed it off, applied a toner and then gave me one of the best head massages I’ve ever had (come on, it’s the best bit!).

After a trim, it was time for the big reveal! “The colour we achieved is a bright and creamy blonde with dimension at the top for a seamless grow-out,” Tulisi said. “Based on your fair features, we lifted you as light as we could to achieve a natural, lived-in look.”

The result was everything I hoped it would be: while the colour is light and bright, there’s depth in the roots which match back with my natural features. This will make the colour low-maintenance too, since as my natural regrowth occurs, it’ll blend in with the blonde hues. Since my hair transformation, I’ve had so many compliments from friends, family and other beauty editors, who’ve all commented on how my blue eyes pop against the warm blonde shade.

In terms of at-home care, the EdwardsAndCo team suggested I add Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In Treatment into my routine, a concentrated all-in-one formula for strength repair. As I adapt to being a blonde, this conditioning leave-in treatment will provide  intense conditioning and hair colour fade protection.

I’m so happy with the end result—and thrilled that I took the plunge—but most of all, I’m glad I worked with a trusted colourist so the end result not only looks great but my strands are healthy too.
