Unwind With Our 6 Favourite Massage Spots

Here’s to a calm, clear head (and skin to match).

The body keeps the score. It’s probably a phrase you’ve seen waxed on many a hardcover simply because the sentiment stands true. Keeping our bodies in fighting shape is usually an afterthought, but consider seeking a restful and transcendent treatment for a much-needed tune-up.

Whether it be a facial sculpt with an all-natural twist, unlocking tension with thermodynamic basalt stones or taking advantage of a hammam-inspired steam room and ice fountain (hot and cold water therapy works wonders)—these spas deliver total body resets rooted in holistic wisdom with high-tech touches.

COMMA

Byron Bay, NSW

The newest kid on the block in boutique wellness spaces in Byron Bay, Comma is a massage and relaxation sanctuary that is laid-back, yet refined in its approach to wellness and body rejuvenation. With interiors designed by Eloise Fotheringham, the place is punctuated with timber sourced from the local Northern Rivers region against a neutral colour palette, allowing you to feel every bit grounded and connected to the Byron Bay landscape, while simultaneously escaping the external stresses of your day-to-day. Luxurious in its simplicity, the spa offers a variety of facials, massages and relaxation experience that will have you wishing you’d hit the comma key and hit pause a whole lot sooner.

KAILO WELLNESS MEDISPA

Fortitude Valley, Queensland

Located within the heavenly Calile Hotel on the ultra-chic James Street in Brisbane, KAILO Medispa is a visually stunning space that brings an immediate sense of relaxation as soon as you step inside. The highly attentive team went above and beyond before, during and after our luxurious spa treatment—we tried the Rose Quartz Spa Facial, which used a high-performing combination of cosmeceutical ingredients plus pure rose oils, crushed quartz and vitamins to treat the signs of ageing, followed by a Vitality Boost IV Infusion, which left us seriously refreshed and energised. Whether you’re looking for a treatment to target specific skin concerns, or just to relax and unwind.  Kailo Medispa is the only spa in Queensland to carry iconic French skincare range Biologique Recherche; this cult-favourite brand uses only the highest quality active ingredients to deliver customised skin solutions. We walked out with a glowing, plumped-up complexion and a pep in our step—and we can’t wait to go back. Kailo Medispa is a must-visit.

SPAQ

Surfers Paradise, Queensland

When you need a break from all that Gold Coast shopping, surfing and sun (it happens), reset at this destination spa. Located inside the too-cool-for-school QT hotel in Surfers Paradise, this 50s-inspired spa is just delightful. Right off the bat, they make things easy: you don’t have to choose your treatment in advance, but rather, make a reservation and, when you arrive, figure out what you feel like. Genius, right? There’s a comprehensive menu featuring facials, massages, makeup and men’s grooming, and if you get there ahead of schedule, you can take advantage of the unisex hammam steam room and ice fountain (hot and cold water therapy has good health benefits). And now you’re ready to get back to the beach.

HALCYON SPA

Cabarita Beach, NSW

Located between the Gold Coast and Byron Bay, this Cabarita Beach boutique hotel is the perfect weekend away situation. The former surf motel has been given a Mediterranean makeover, and the eclectic blue and white décor is just begging for an Instagram post. Once you’ve done that, relax by the heated saltwater pool (the surrounding palms and striped daybeds are also Instagram worthy), then head over to the spa (white stucco walls and vibrant blue and green printed curtains, so that’s another snap) and indulge in a treatment—depending on your preference, there’s both Sodashi and O Cosmedics treatments and products on offer. The menu includes face, scalp, body, and massage therapies, manis and pedis, and there’s a Hamman-inspired dome steam room. Girls getaway, anyone?

Halcyon House has been named in the US Conde Nast Traveler 2019 Best Hotels in the World Gold List!

THE FACIALIST

Auckland, New Zealand

There’s a lot to love about Auckland: amazing food and incredible wine, obviously, and we’re adding this clinic to the list. Located in City Works Depot, it’s long been the go-to for skintellectuals who are in sync with owner Ashleigh Scott’s old-school ethos of no machines, holistic treatments, active and organic products (brands include Odacite, Biologi and Josh Rosebrook), and a focus on massage-based facials. We had the signature Bespoke Facial, which was gorgeous, but the massage was the big revelation: utilising various techniques and tools, our therapist kneaded and manipulated our face so effectively, we swear she sculpted a new jawline and carved out a pair of cheekbones.
