A glimpse inside a glamorous lunch filled with business and beauty wisdom…

Never short of inspirational and tenacious female brand founders, the beauty industry is a wonderful place if you’re in search of entrepreneurial role models to look up to. Which is why we, here at Gritty Pretty, couldn’t wait to host our final Women With GRITT event of 2022 last weekend.

A picturesque Sydney day, Saturday December 10 marked the final event in the Gritty Pretty calendar and, as it turns out, one of the most fruitful when it came to four incredible brand founders sharing their wisdom about all things business and beauty. Set amongst lush gardens at the iconic Chiswick Woollahra, the long luncheon hosted 35 of our wonderful readers for an afternoon of delicious food, decadent drinks and enough business tips and tricks to write a small novel.

Hosted by Gritty Pretty’s Beauty Editor, Rose Garnett, the panel saw the brand founders–Ashli Templer of Yours Only, Frances van der Velden of AIRYDAY, Hillary Wilcox of MAAEMO Organic and Raquel Bouris of Who Is Elijah–chat about everything from the importance of building a community to why perseverance is a non-negotiable and the art of scaling a start-up in a financially viable and sustainable way.

Each guest also walked away with a gift bag worth over $300 and a keepsake Peppermint Grove x Women With GRITT candle which was set on the table amongst dreamy florals designed by Minni. An afternoon overflowing with insightful conversation and the forming of new friendships, we can’t wait to see you at the next one in 2023!

But before we close out the year, here’s a glimpse of what our four brand founders shared on the day…

Yours Only’s Ashli Templer On Building A Community

“Being able to create genuine connections with people who may have been struggling with a skin intolerance or allergy and who have seen real results with your products is one of the most rewarding parts of being a brand founder.”

AIRYDAY’s Frances van der Velden On Fighting The Good Fight

“You will get told ‘no’ so many times but you can’t let it stop you. If you have a vision and believe in it, you need to keep pushing and eventually you will find people who believe in it too. There is no rulebook for launching a business, so you need to be prepared to make the big calls and take risks to bring it to life.”

MAAEMO Organics’s Hillary Wilcox On Turning Your Passion Into A Business

“I had always been so passionate about ingredients and how certain natural ingredients affected the skin and solved skin issues that my naturopathy clients were presenting with. That’s when I realised that I could formulate products that were organic and still delivered results. That was the motivation I needed to make MAAEMO happen.”

Who Is Elijah’s Raquel Bouris On The Importance Of Support

“Without a support system around you, you cannot achieve the success you want. Whether it’s the people you employ or your friends and family, it is so important to have people around you who are championing your dreams and helping you problem-solve when challenges arise.”
