How To Rock The Nail Art Trend (But Make It Chic)

by Eleanor Pendleton

Guess what? Nail art is back in Vogue but this time, it's sophisticated, it's refined and made for adults.

We’ve been charting the rise of nail art for the past few years, and the trends in designs have evolved. While there’s no colour or design that’s certified ‘in’ or ‘out,’ because your art aesthetic is personal and subjective to your own style, there are a few fun looks that are predicted to be really-trendy this coming year, according to Clare Mann, Founder of Mayfair Studios and the manicurist behind these looks.

Love, Want, Need

Be inspired by the Queen of Hearts with a teeny, tiny love heart at the base of your talons.

How to nail it? You’ll need a dotting tool to perfect the tiny hearts but let your creativity run wild when it comes to the colour.

Green Wash

This winter, khaki green is the colour du jour for winter. From Army green block nails to split nails or French tips, Bottega Veneta green is gone and khaki is in.

Our favourite formulas and shades include the essie expressie Quick Dry Nail Polish in Cargo-go!, the Gucci Vernis à Ongles Nail Polish in Miriam Mint and the O.P.I Infinite Shine Polish in Olive.

Fine Line Frenchie

If you think of those tacky, stick-on square nails from the 90s when you think of French tips, then think again. French tips are back an in a big way. “Experiment with different colours like lilac purple, duck egg blue or a rich burgundy or try adding a thin striping brush for those ultra-fine lines,” says Mann.

If you’re a woman after Harry Styles’s heart and a fine line is tickling your fancy, it’s a good idea to invest in a fine nail brush to ensure you can apply the polish with precision.

But if you’re more colour-inclined, some great shades to top off your tips with include Hermes Les Mains Hermes Nail Enamel in Violet Byzantin, CHANEL Le Vernis in 739 Mirage and Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Nail Colour in Sugar Fix.

Glitz & Glamour

For this look, Mann was inspired by Italian fashion house, Missoni. “Adding curved waves of yellow gold, rose gold and silver glitter doesn’t need to be naff. A sparkly tip off set by a clear base can be the finishing touch to your look,” says Mann.

We’re loving:

Dark Chocolate

As we see runways leaning into the rich, chocolate brown colour trend, it looks as if our nails are also headed in the same direction. Gorgeous on every skin tone, the tonal colour can be worn as a French manicure, covering the entire nail, or better yet, choose a varying shade for each nail to create an edgy, new look.

Moon Cycle

Venture into the world of subtle nail art, which is most easily done by starting with a reverse half-moon manicure. “A pop of colour on the nail gives interest,” says Mann. “Life is short, have fun with your nails.” Touché.
