When the clock struck midnight on December 31, 2019, never in our wildest imaginations could we have predicted what 2020 had in store. Thanks to a global pandemic, what were once normalities soon became luxuries, and we were confined to our homes for what felt like an eternity. So, when restrictions finally started to lift in mid-May, a different kind of photo shoot was born…
Gracing the cover of the new, you-beaut Winter 2020 issue of Gritty Pretty Magazine is P.E. Nation Co-founder, Estée Lauder Ambassador and fashion darling, Pip Edwards.
With a skeleton crew, masks, gloves and social distancing all in place, this shoot was certainly a first for Gritty Pretty. Renowned fashion editorial photographer Steven Chee was behind the lens and celebrity-favourite fashion stylist Jessica Pecoraro was the brains behind the enviable fashion looks. The grungy-yet-chic hair was the work of magician, Koh and the makeup looks – including that bold lip – well, you can thank Filomena Natoli for that, helping us capture Edwards in a new light.

Hair
“The look we went for was reminiscent of a modern French up-do. We wanted it to be messy, cool and not overly glam. It needed to be true to Pip. To achieve the look, the main product I used was the Bedroom.Hair Texture Spray from KEVIN.MURPHY. I applied it to Pip’s damp hair pre-blow dry and then did a finishing spray of the product to build up the texture until it reached the level I wanted to achieve. To create that messy look, I only tonged certain sections. I like to leave the first section, tong the second section, leave the third and so on. This ensures the hair isn’t too perfect. To lock in the style, I finished with a spritz of KEVIN.MURPHY Session.Spray Flex Finishing Spray.”

Makeup
“Pip’s look is elegant and chic. Knowing I was going to do a red lip, I started by prepping the lips using a gentle scrub and applying Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Color Replenish Lip Balm. While the lips absorbed the balm, I started on Pip’s skin, applying Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation with a dense short-bristled foundation brush to buff the product in. Then I went back to the main event – the red lip! I blotted any excess balm and lined the lips with Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lip Pencil. I like to line the lips for longevity but it’s not essential if you’re using a highly pigmented lipstick. I applied the Estée Lauder Pure Color Desire Rouge Excess Lipstick in Outsmart with a lip brush for precision. To clean up the edges, I used a small flat-edged brush with a touch of concealer to sharpen the lip line.”
