Natural Foundations: Do They Get The Job Done?
Are they worth it? Let us work it (out).
Like most things in the beauty world, the natural foundation space is difficult to navigate. As consumers, we’re bombarded with a lot of information, not all of it true. For starters, what does natural mean, anyway? And do natural formulas even work? If it took us 10 years to find out current foundation, is it worth making the switch?
In cosmetics, the term ‘natural’ is very difficult to define. Largely unregulated in the global marketplace, products deemed ‘natural’ usually contain some natural ingredients; however, that doesn’t mean they’re 100 per cent naturally-derived.
The good news? There are foundations out there that contain natural, good-for-you and good-for-the-planet ingredients – they just require a little extra effort to find. From there, you have to determine if they work. Luckily, we’ve done all the hard yards for you, testing out six products to determine which ones are worth your precious coin (tough gig, we know).
The following natural foundations are all formulated without silicones, sulfates, parabens and synthetic fragrances and contain at least one third natural ingredients.

Ere Perez Quinoa Water Foundation
The reviewer: Erin
The review: If you’re after something with light to medium coverage, this Ere Perez foundation is actually, quite nice. The formula would suit someone with combination to oily skin as it does dry down quite matte. Staying power is only so, so (it won’t stick around past 3pm) but it does have a beautiful, lightweight finish.

Inika Certified Organic Liquid Foundation With Hyaluronic Acid
The reviewer: Rose
The review: The perfect addition to your ‘night-time’ foundation wardrobe (am I a bit excessive?) this foundation provides coverage without the cake-factor. The medium coverage formula is buildable and won’t bunch up or cling to any dry areas. It’s particularly good if you want a subtle glow without copious amounts of dew. In other words, it strikes the perfect balance between highlighting and mattifying. The best part? It stays in place all day – no powder necessary.

Chantecaille Future Skin
The reviewer: Erin
The review: If you’re looking for a medium coverage formula that is very buildable, this Chantecaille foundation is your girl. Giving you the freedom to play with coverage, the formula provides a very natural, second skin effect. Just use a dab here and there and you’re good to go. J’adore!

RMS Beauty “Un” Cover-Up Cream Foundation
The reviewer: Rose
The review: Being such a huge fan of the RMS “Un” Cover-Up Concealer, I was very excited to try this foundation. The formula provided a natural, effortless finish and left a lovely glow on the skin. However, for the thickness of the formula, it wasn’t super buildable. The large pot container also makes it a little difficult to gauge how much product to use (and isn’t super sanitary). I would advise that the foundation is best suited to someone who doesn’t have super problematic skin and is more so looking for a foundation to spot-treat small areas.
The rating: 6.5/10 (sometimes a girl needs a half)

Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Flawless Serum Foundation
The reviewer: Erin
The review: This is a proper ‘foundation’ foundation (if you know what I mean) to suit all skin types! The formula is surprisingly high coverage and a little goes a long way. My biggest tip? Blend, blend, blend when you first apply as it does dry down quite quickly and it will certainly stick around. Great for the next time you want to feel ‘done’ for an event (probably in 2021 at this rate).

Kosas Tinted Face Oil
The reviewer: Rose
The review: This product is cult for a reason – it works. Perfect for creating an even skin tone and for the ultimate dewy everyday face, the formula’s thinness glides over the skin effortlessly. I have normal to combination skin, so it works well for my skin type. However, if you lean towards the oilier side, it probably isn’t for you.
