“I can’t wait to see her become a mum”:
Eleanor Pendleton & Husband Mathew Wilson Share Their Unique Love Story

They met dancing in the rain at a Sydney music festival. Now, with a baby due imminently, Eleanor and Mathew reflect on their 10-year relationship.

No two people are the same. We all come into this world with our own unique set of quirks, nuances and can’t-be-replicated behaviours. Similarly, no two love stories are the same, either – when two adults come together, the bond the couple share is theirs and theirs only. That’s what makes it so special. In partnership with Georg Jensen, we’re speaking to well-known duos to find out more about their unique love. First up? Gritty Pretty Founder & Editor-in-Chief Eleanor Pendleton and husband Mathew Wilson.

For the past 10 years, Eleanor has always had her partner Mathew by her side. The pair met on Valentine’s Day in 2009 at a Sydney music festival. “For me, it was love at first sight,” Eleanor says, reflecting on their first encounter. “I remember Mat’s blue eyes – they just grabbed me. We spent the day dancing in the rain with friends.” That same day, Mathew noticed Eleanor, too – and he knew it was more than just a fleeting crush: “Of course she’s beautiful but there was definitely something else, something really special about her that drew me to her.”

This genetically-blessed pairing see the real beauty in one another. For Eleanor, Mathew is her sounding board, problem solver and partner, all in one: “He reminds me there is always a solution to every problem – even when it might seem like there isn’t, he has this ability to make me look for the light. His sense of optimism, pragmatism and diplomacy is something that is so inherently Mat. He has this constant calming energy about him – like the ocean on a still day. We’ve been together for over 10 and a half years now and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him with his feathers ruffled – he just doesn’t have that in him. Because I do (maybe it’s my Filipino blood), he inspires me continuously to be better and to look at the world with more optimism.”

What does Mathew find most beautiful about Eleanor? “She has a caring nature and is so empathetic. She really gives her whole self to our relationship and all of her friendships. She has taught me that beauty is definitely more than skin deep. Real beauty is much more about who a person is and how they make other people feel – rather than how they look.”

Over the course of a decade, the pair have rung in countless occasions together – from birthdays to Christmases and anniversaries. They’ve always celebrated milestones with jewellery. “The first gift Mat ever gave me was a piece of jewellery – a ring with the engraving ‘Elephant Shoe’,” Eleanor says. “When you mouth the words without sound, it looks as if you’re saying, ‘I love you’. It was a saying we used to say to each other before one of us was brave enough to say, ‘I love you’ for the very first time.”

“We’ve celebrated other milestones with jewellery – our engagement, our wedding day.” In April 2018, Eleanor and Mathew married at The Shangri-La Resort & Spa, Boracay Island, Philippines in front of 48 of their closest friends and family – an intimate destination wedding that was very “them”. 

Now, Eleanor and Mathew are gearing up for a new chapter in their lives: parenthood. As Mathew explains, these two first time parents are ready to jump into the unknown: “I already have a whole new level of love and respect for El watching her carry our child – I’m sure that will increase a gazillion-fold after she brings our child into the world. I know El will be super nurturing, incredibly loving and very, very protective – I can’t wait to see her become a mum. I think we’re both a little oblivious when it comes to what we’re in for but we are really excited for this next chapter in our lives. We are a great team and will support each other through the good times and the hard times.”

Eleanor echoes Mathew’s sentiment: “Mat is going to be an incredible father – he will protect our child in a way only a father can. He will teach our child good values, how to be empathetic and I have no doubt he himself will practice patience and surrendering to parenthood in a way that I know will inspire me to be the best mother I can be. I know as we navigate parenthood, we’ll do it together – all the while with him reminding me to laugh and let my own inner child out; enjoying the simple things along the way. I’ve dreamed of the moment I’ll see him hold our baby skin-to-skin for the first time. I can’t wait to watch my husband become the beautiful father I know he will naturally be.”

We can’t see into the future – we left our crystal ball at home – but for Eleanor and Mathew, we think the future looks pretty bright. “In five years, if we are lucky, I imagine we will have two – maybe even three – kids,” says Eleanor. “My idea of happiness and success is living in our dream home on Sydney’s Northern Beaches with our family; hosting a big, loud family lunch on a deck overlooking our big backyard and just a stone’s throw from the beach, watching our kids playing, running around. Mat and I will have a glass of wine in hand – talking, laughing and watching what our love has created. For me, that’s living.”
